Opening 1 A Relaxing View Of Everyday Work John Restivo, David Hofemann and Evangelina Garza taking a moment to relax from their busy schedule. One of the most popular pastimes for Bremen’s students involves the art of relaxation. It is both well developed and practiced vehemently. The exercises encompass everything from everyday ‘rap’ sessions to meandering down the student guarded hallways. Of course, students get a chance to relax outside of their regular classes in gym and commons room or study hall. Despite the rush of trying to get through the crowded hallways to class, students can usually find time to sit, kick off their shoes and do something with their extra time, like reading a note or studying for a test. Even though the relaxation takes up much of the student's time, there is still a time for doing something useful or constructive. This is seen in the artistic abilities of many students. The students aren't just artists in the sense of art but in many fields such as Home Ec., Auto Mechanics, Music and Choir. Students have perfected what they do best and this adds an extra touch to the overall attitude of those at Bremen. Rhonda Tallo uses her free time to read a note. 2 Opening An example of pure dedication In the sense of creativity Bremen students show great dedication. From a devotion to school work of all sorts to spirited loyalty for the many different Bremen activities. Dedication is a vital part of this school, and it can be seen in many faces and places throughout the year. Dedication is seen with great loyalty as the cheerleading squad braves out the foul weather Their Own Style Of Dedication Paul Kennedy and Jim Kmet attempt the impossible Studying in the commons room is no easy task, nor is cheerleading on a cold wet day, or working on a van that looks beyond repair, but does that stop Bremen students? No!, and they even find time for a little innocent fun. A simple curiosity shown by Mike Larsen and Scott Woods. Opening 3 With help of Mr. Miller and the Bremen Cheerleaders Mrs. Rose Kennelly presents our school with a new flag in dedication of her late husband William Kennelly. Nancy Knight in action. Memories are an important part of our lives. All that we do will be a memory in the future. Some of our memories are of everyday activities such as classes, friends, and such, but some memories are of the strange and unusual things that we do. There are also those saddening memories of loved ones that pass away from time to time. Memories are things that you should keep with you always, because they are worth living for tomorrow. The Memories Of The Past Are Remembered Before joining the work force at Bremen High School, Bill Kennelly had been active in the community of Midlothian for many years. He, along with other residents, were instrumental in founding of the Midlothian Highland Games. Bill was a great patriot being very active in the Midlothian VFW and before his death in October of 1980, he had risen to the rank of District Officer. As told by his wife, Rosemary, Bill believed the home of the Brave belonged to the Brave people of our community.” On the evening of the Miss Midlothian Contest, The Highland Games Officials presented a flag to Mrs. Kennelly in Bill's honor to show their appreciation for all the work he had done for the Highland Games. At our first Homecoming assembly, Mrs. Kennelly presented the flag to the students of Bremen High School. This flag replaced the old flag and now hangs in the west gymnasium. Now that's relaxing! Right Dave? 4 Opening Left Michelle Basick and Kathy Murphy: Friendship personified. Below Santa - friend to all. Above Friends. Patricia. Janice, Pat. Wanda, Hilda, clown for the camera. The Joys Of Old Friends And Of New Friendship starts with a simple “Hi, how are you”, and from then on it’s one great adventure after another. We learn to see our friends as ourselves and appreciate everything about them. There are times to laugh and shout for joy, and there are times to cry from hopeless sorrow. With a friend the days seem so pleasantly happy, and all our dreams come true. “High school friends are something you'd like to hold on to all of your life if you could. That seldom happens though. There are those occasional friendships that do last, but more often than not old friends leave and make room for new ones. That's growing up, I guess. The only compensation that we have are the memories of those friends. Later on, I think I’ll look back and realize just how important they were.” Robert Jager 1978 Bremen Graduate Opening 5 TODAY’S TEMPO Homecoming 1981 was very successful and enjoyable for all. Patty Kendal, Cathy Dempsey and Mark Klekowski, the chairpersons in charge, along with the rest of the Homecoming committee did an excellent job at organizing and running the various activities included in this year’s Spirit Week. Preparations for this year’s Homecoming began two weeks before the events took place. Those who wanted to be on the committee attended the first meeting and filled out an application then submitted it to the senior chairpersons. The chairpersons selected the committee and posted their names. Committee members were assigned various jobs and activities to be included in this year's Homecoming. In addition to the events, the Homecoming committee also sold items promoting school spirit. Homecoming 1981 ran exceptionally well and, compounded by the Braves’ victories at the Homecoming games, made this occasion enjoyable by all. This year's Christmas Concert was a great success. Mr. Branch was very pleased with the performance of all three choirs. He said, “The concert featured a number of songs with all three choirs singing together. A rousing rendition of “Go Tell It On the Mountain was heard with the exciting vocals of Greg Nichols, Tracey Murphy, and Charles Steward. Other soloists were Jamie Scroggins singing If I Could Write A Song, Leeroy Ray singing Beneath the Window, Maggie McCarey singing ”0 Holy Night, Jolanda Powell singing Beneath the Window. Beth Mature and Deedee Scalia decorate for their Senior class victory. 6 Division Bremen: A Learning Center For All Ages On the evening of October 21, role changing took place at Bremen High School in which both the parents and the students of Bremen High School were involved. By way of the Bremen Booster Club the parents were able to attend their child chil-dren’s classes. The parents followed their child’s classes to meet with the teachers and discuss the accomplishments of their children. The traditional Senior Citizen tour of Bremen High School was conducted on December 11, 1981. Included in the tour was a stop at the IMC where the Senior Citizens viewed slides of various activities. Also toured were the chorus room, the administrative center, and the Bremen cafeteria, where the cheerleaders acted as hostesses for the guests. The Senior Citizens will always be welcome at Bremen. Santa visited children from the Bremen area in the commons room on December 17, 1981. The cheerleaders served refreshments and entertained the children. The A relaxed group of Senior Citizens as they enjoy their day at Bremen children also got a chance to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. The students returned to the look of letter sweaters, poodle skirts, bobbie socks and leather jackets. The halls were decorated with jukeboxes and cartoons of 50's antics. The spirit created by the clothing and decorations as well as the events was not dampened by the cold weather and pouring rain. The parade stepped off on time with first place honors going to the Freshmen and Publications staff for their floats. More excitement followed the parade as our Braves went on to the highlight of the week: A Braves win over the Hillcrest Hawks. The Varsity football team displaying their winning talents(above). This event allowed girls from all four class levels to participate if they were interested. Tryouts were held and the final teams were picked. The girls organized their teams into offense and defense and worked on their strategies for the “big game”. Powder Puff Football was more than just a new event it was a chance for the girls to learn to work together and become one as a team. They all had one common goal that united them; to play their best and to win. This event also gave the girls a chance to show the boys that they weren't the only ones who could play football. Coach Jones gives the Freshmen the last minute strategy. The day Of the games An acjion Vjew 0f the Frosh-Soph game from the sidelines, was warm and sunny. The captains drew slips of paper to see who would play who. The Freshmen played first and won against the Sophomores. The second game was the Juniors against the Seniors. The Seniors proved victorious and the Juniors never scored. The girls alone weren't the only ones who participated in the event. Willing guys from all classes made up a cheerleading squad. The 81-82 boy's cheerleading squad. 10 Homecoming For Girls Only Powder Puff Football wasn’t as easy as it looked. All of the girls put a lot of energy into the game. They played at their best and gave it their all. This event, although new, was a great suc- cess. The game was official with four eight minute time periods. The referees were on the spot to call penalties and make crucial decisions. The referees were Mr. D'Ambro-sio, Mr. Novak, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Magurany. The sophomores won the Frosh-Soph game with final score of 18-12. The Seniors won the Junior-Senior game with a score of 24-0. Although the Juniors lost they gave a good fight, played well and showed good sportsmanship. Amy Peters making a quick get — away play. Powder Puff Football As in the past the traditional Ta-I i s m a n events Played a large part in the Homecoming of 81. It is for the students Overcoming Challenges ... the everlasting challenge. The four class years as well as the clubs participated in the Talisman events. These events offer challenge in two ways. The first is to strive to complete the event to the best of your ability. The second is to have the fastest time and win the Talisman event overall. The class winners were Sopho- mores and the club winners were B-CLUB. The events were supported by The classes with cheers and general overall spirit. The Seniors show their spirit through their red attire. Talisman The Talisman events for this year consisted of the pie eating contest, the Spirit trunk, the Indian knee carry, and the ten man pyri-mad. These events were all timed and the team that had the best average was the winning team. Terry Bristow helps Sheila Dempsey get dressed. Ann Resner contemplating another pie (above) Sophomores show their stuff! (below) Homecoming 13 Winning, Bremen 1981-82 Homecoming will always be remembered by all those involved as being one of the closest races ever among the four classes. Past Homecoming races have never been closer, nor has there ever been stiffer competi-tion between classes. Each had its own who should have won and who deserved to win. The competition for the Overall was not only close, but went all the way to the final Friday to decide the winners of the 1981-82 Overall Trophy. The class color and cheer competitions continued the close pattern until the final votes of the event’s judges were counted. The Senior class took the Overall by a slim margin to the Sophomores, and the VICA club captured the overall club trophy. Competition was heavy this year and the underclassmen will be fighting hard to be the new successors of next year’s Homecoming events. This year's Homecoming was a great accomplishment. The Homecoming committee itself was a great help to me. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Rowe for helping me understand the way things were to be done when I was a Junior chairman of Homecoming. Without them I would have been lost. I would also like to thank Mr. Jones and Mr. Miller for all their time and effort they put into Homecoming. But most of all I want to thank the students for taking part in the events and making this year's Homecoming what it was, a SUCCESS!” Sincerely, Patty Kendall Competing And Trying Clockwise from above. The class of '84 tugged their way to victory as their strength triumphed over the other classes and faculty. Obstacle The Obstacle Course consisted of performing different athletic feats, such as hurdles, running through tires, three-legged race and carrying a basketball between the knees. The tricycle event was also performed in the gymnasium. The Senior class pedaled their way to victory and proceeded to win the tricycle race and event. Publications proved victorious over the clubs. It is sponsored by the Bremen Booster Club and it enables the teachers and the parents to meet and discuss their child’s progress. Some teachers offer demonstrauons of actual work done in the classroom. Mrs. Profetto, who instructs the Mass Media class, enables parents to view her students' already completed commercials which they put on video tape. There is always an experiment being performed by one of the Science Department teachers while political issues are discussed in various history classes. The highlight of the night was the crowning of King Mike Tattas and Queen Dawn Daggy. The dance was sponsored by Student Council and National Honor Society and will hopefully continue for many years to come. Mrs. Krysinski's first period class took first in the Door Dec competition. Santa Day Student Council and National Honor Society on December 17, sponsored a Santa Day from 2:00 until 4:00. Children from the community came to see Santa and his helpers. Roy John Zierlein, as Santa, and the Varsity Cheerleaders, as the helpers, handed out cookies, balloons, and entertained the children with games. A request went out to the faculty and students to donate any items they felt might add to the interest of the auction. The original date of the auction had to be postponed because of the unusually harsh winter. It was rescheduled for the end of April and renewed effort went into gathering items and helpers for the event. Although the attendance wasn’t high, Auctioneer Jim Miller helped the Boosters raise close to $900. for Bremen. Sold to this man tor $7.50! Anyone give me 4? Much work went into not only cataloguing items, but also setting them out for display. 24 Booster Auction Marie and Tom Genovese dance the night away. Co-Presidents Len and Anne Feil distribute the door prizes. Booster Dinner Dance The Bremen Booster Club is an organization of parents lending a helping hand. Throughout the course of the school year, they hold fund raisers in an effort to raise money for different clubs, athletic teams, and organizations here at Bremen. One such fund raiser held this year was the Third Annual Booster Club Dinner Dance. It was held February 20, 1982 at Rosewood West. A total of seventy-six couples attended the dance. They dined and danced to the music of the Ed Danlin Band. Door prizes were donated by the local merchants and awarded to various couples. Other fund raisers held by the Booster Club this year for the benefit of the students were an Auction, Shop and Share days, and the selling of Entertainment ’82 books. All of the proceeds of each of these activities combined will be distributed to the clubs and organizations for next year. Marty and Bob Horn dance to Ed Danlin and his band. The Scotts and the Rutters take it slow and easy. Booster Club 25 City Lights The Turnabout Dance is sponsored by the Student Council who chose this year’s theme “City Lights”. The band featured at the dance was South Side Connection. This year’s Student Council President remarked about the dance, “A Complete Success! We had a large turn out of people and a good time was had by all.” Tom and Darlene boogie down Valerie and her date share a quiet moment. 26 Turnabout Dawn Defay and Ellen Myers cast their vote for king. Turnabout 27 Presidential Classroom The Presidential Classroom for Young Americans was attended this year by Linda Makselan, Laurie Carney and Alice Casarda. They experienced a week of intense study and exposure to the American Government. Any Junior or Senior student has the opportunity to participate. The Program consists of seven days of activities in Washington D.C. In order to be eligible for this program, an essay has to be written on why you would like to go to Washington D.C. The students chosen through their essays spend an entire week in the nation’s capitol. It is recommended for all students. My week in Washington as a student in the Presidential Classroom was a memorable and rewarding experience. I learned about our national government first hand through many seminars by such prominent and influential individuals as Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and former presidential candidate John Anderson. I also learned more about our government by touring Washington D. C.. which proved to be a beautiful and intriguing city. Perhaps the most memorable aspect of the Presidential Classroom was the many friends I made from all across the country. Each participant in the classroom represented a different and unique set of opinions on various issues. My week in Washington D. C. proved to be a fantastic learning experience as well as a fun and exciting time. Never before have I learned so much about our own country and how our government functions.” Linda Makselan Presidential Classroom My participation in the Classroom in Washington D.C. was definitely a fun and exciting one. I had the opportunity, and so did many other students, to see many famous sights, institutes and monuments of our Nation's Capitol. I enjoyed seeing and experiencing our government first hand, such as visiting the House and the Senate while in session. Perhaps the best part was meeting and talking with students my age from all over our country and others. I sincerely hope Bremen will continue to send students in the upcoming years because it's certainly a worthwhile and beneficial experience. Alice Casarda '83 “One of the most rewarding experiences I have participated in was the week I spent in Washington D.C. as part of the Presidential Classroom. The week was spent touring the City of Washington D.C. To me it was very impressive. The city was a beautiful place. Also we attended seminars where people such as ambassadors, Supreme Court justices, representatives, senators and other dignified people spoke to us. It was a great experience. The Presidential Classroom enabled me to learn about the capitol city first hand, rather than through the books. There was more to the week than just learning history though. We learned about the government. I met so many new people and made so many new friends. The people were great. The week I spent in Washington D.C. for Presidential Classroom was exciting, a learning experience and a lot of fun. I would recommend it to anyone. Laurie Carney '82 Presidential Classroom 29 Former English Dept. head. Mr. Bruell, points out the advantages of teaching. Searching For A Career. Ken Skorup informs Mr. Adrian Borst about the activities of the day. Career day is sponsored by the Guidance Dept, and NHS, both headed by Mr. Hulfachor. It is educational day in which students are able to gain knowledge on various occupations. The students pick their career interests and representatives are invited to Bremen to give first hand accounts of their jobs. This information is not found in books and is invaluable to the students. When asked how Mr. Hulfachor felt he said, This year the Career Day was again a big success. We had 50 different career fields represented. Each year approximately ten new careers are added as we delete old ones.” He concluded in saying, “I want to express my appreciation to the faculty and student body for making this an excellent Career Day. I'm convinced that this type of educational and vocational career day, with top experts from the actual career fields, is the most effective method for high school students.” Mr. Roger Mousseau talks shop with Louie. Pops Concert Marie Griffin in her rendition of Why Do Fools Fall in Love The Bremen choirs presented their first Pops” concert this spring. This event was televised by Metro Vision. For the most part, students were allowed to pick their own solos and work out stage movements with them. Nine rock soloists were featured and Cortez Bryson's band, Turning Point. Although the concert had a special dance group, the Galaxy Dancers, the choirs had three production numbers. The Girls' Chorus was a hit with their show choir performance of The Easiest Way as was the Concert Choir’s collection of Commercials in Stay Tuned . General Chorus The 1982 Junior Prom The 1982 Junior - Senior Prom was held on Friday, May 14, and began at the brand new Annie Ti-ques Restaurant at 7:45 p.m. For most people Prom is the time for friends, excitement and dancing to the music, played by this year's band, Bushwack”. Even when the band stopped for a break, a professional disc jockey stereo system presentation took over. Along with the rest of the nights activities. Prom was provided with an evening of non-stop music and entertainment. This year’s Queen was Darlene Swidergal. The rest of her court included Patricia Malone, Cecilia Johnson, Kathy Murphy, Tina Mu- linaro, and Donna Lindsey. Escorting these lovely ladies were Danny Hammons, Tony Mims, Jeff Vervlied, Tom McKernin, and Erick Lambert. Escorting our lovely Queen was Tom Godin. According to Queen Darlene, The 1982 Prom was the best dance that I attended while at Bremen High School. I enjoyed the dance very much because it gave me a chance to see all of my friends looking their best. I also enjoyed it because it was the last Bremen dance that I would attend. The first activity of course was the dinner. For the first course, French Onion Soup. Then came the salad, and after that was the main dish of Prime Rib or Chicken Kiev with double baked potatoes, string beans, and a dessert of soft vanilla Ice Cream. Once dinner was over the dancing was soon to follow. Along with the normal fast and slow dances was the train dance, which seemed to go everywhere including outside of the ballroom. There was even the traditional dance where the gentlemen were on one side and the ladies on the other; and what happened after that? Well you had to be there. There was as usual, the Garter Ceremony, which no one wanted to miss, picture taking, and the an-nouncement of the Queen. All in all the evening was a complete success. Mom and Dad On Thursday, June 3rd, Bremen held its Twenty-Eighth Annual Commencement of Graduation for over 350 graduates. Although the evening was held indoors in the west gym rather than outdoors as it has been for the last six years, it was truly an evening to remember. The grand night began with a processional of all the graduates led by Junior Marshalls Kim Barajas, Cathy Dempsey, Dan Kat-zenberger, and Mark Klekowski. During this year’s commencement the invocation was delivered by Reverend John Jorden from the First Baptist Church of Midlothian and Soloist Larry Jordan sang the National Anthem and “One in a Million You Mr. George Bieber, Principal, gave his recognition and presentation of the Class of 1982 while Mrs. Eleanor Ferraro, Mr. Donald Slattery and Mr. VJ Moritz presented the diplomas. This year's Benediction was delivered by Father Al Ciciora from St Stanislaus Church in Posen. Cathy, Sherri and Lorin helping each other with final touches. During the Commencement, Salutatorian Sheila Dempsey read her speech “Tonight is the Night”. According to Sheila, Tonight is the night for each of us to take a step toward our future” and it is the very night we bridge the past to the future.” She urged the entire graduating class to use their independence and decision making abilities to better ourselves, others and the entire community in which we live. Valedictorian Randy Browning's speech was originally titled Playing the Game” but it turned out to be a special thanks to all the parents who followed their children from toddlers to young adults. According to Randy, Tonight is our chance to remember our parents and all their help. After all, if you really think about it, they are the ones who have made this night possible for each of us. Jenny heads for her tassle turning. The Smiles Of New Graduates After receiving their diplomas, each student then continues across the stage for the traditional tassle turning and handshake with Principal George Bieber. The smiles of this final acknowledgement of their success is apparent on all of their faces. Right: Michelle Greenberg. Jim Bodinet, Mia Gimino. Tim Borden. They help get students involved in our school. Students are able to meet new people and perform various positive activities for our school. At the beginning of each new year, there is an Organization Day held in which Freshmen have one hour to view the various clubs in the school. They are later given the opportunity to join them. One such organization, Student Council, is sponsored by Mr. Jones. They are a student government club who help plan and activate many activities throughout the year. These activities include Homecoming, dances. Student of the Month, and Santa Day. Two members of Student Council, Julie Waldo and Mar-ybeth Snyders help with Santa Day. The National Honor Society is a more selective club. To become a member you must have carried a grade point average of 4.0 from your freshman to your junior year and have five teacher recommendations. The NHS heads various functions throughout the year including sponsoring dances, bake sales, and bondage days. It is a great honor to be selected for NHS and its members reflect it. Diane Kintz light the candle of leadership for the new NHS members. 42 Organizations Continue To Roll There are other organizations which are personal interest oriented. One such is the Spanish Club which is sponsored by Miss Runyan. They have held many bake sales throughout the year. They also sponsor candy sales weekly in which Spanish candy is sold. Mrs. Boettcher’s Drama class is a newly formed personal interest club. This club is a first for Bremen. It enables the students, all 26 who were accepted, to learn about acting and theatre production. Another organization, Bremen's choral groups, have consistenly scored high in state and local competition. The choir, under Otis Branch's Direction is widely known and has appeared numerous times on Chicago television. The choir placed high in the IHSA Vocal Music Contest which determines the best singers throughout the state of Illinois. The Chess team had a very successful year or at least it was for sophomore Joe Cursio who competed in the IHSA State Individual Chess Tournament in Rock Island, Illinois. Even though Bremen teams haven’t been state championship winners they are all good competitors and offer an exciting game for all loyal Bremen fans. An athlete is usually a special type of person, able to juggle his her practices with homework and possibly a job. Sports, either watching or competing, give you a better feeling about your school. There are three sessions of sports; fall, winter, and spring. Each season offers two to three activities for boys as well as girls. Athletics at Bremen are geared toward meeting the interest of all students. Dawn Sharon get into the Homecoming spirit at their Cross Country meet. When asked her feelings about the 1981-1982 world of girls' sports at Bremen, Miss Jegers responded positively. She believes the turn-out of students was at an all time high for Bremen girls' sports. She was quoted as saying, With increased participation in try-outs, we were able to attain a better variety of students than in the past years. This also made a fairly successful year possible for girls’ athletics.” Coach Kristan cheers on his mighty Braves. 52 Fall, Winter, Spring Over the years, Bremen High School’s sports program has increased. This can be accounted for by increased funds from the school, the Bremen Booster Club, and the students’ fund raisers. Each fall at Bremen brings the excitement of a good football game. Football is not the only sport in progress while the leaves are turning brown. There are the boys' and the girls’ cross country teams, the girls’ tennis, volleyball, golf, and girls’ swimming. The participation during the fall, including all timers, managers, coaches, and fans, keeps Bremen students very busy. Winter sports offer the dribbling down the court of dedicated Bremen basketball players, (girls and boys), the pinning of an opponent with the wrestling team, the relays of the boys' swim team, and the strikes and spares of the girls' bowling team. As spring welcomes warm weather, the braves head out for warm weather sports. There are the boys’ and Girls' track teams, the boys’ tennis team, the girls' softball team, and the boys’ baseball team. Bremen Braves Freshman Football team ended the 1981 season with 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Our Freshman team showed a lot of potential, desire, and total dedication during this winning season. The offensive team played with intensity with Harlan South rushing for over 800 yards this season while the offensive line was making gigantic holes in the opposing team’s defensive lines. On defense our entire team held together to stop other teams for minus yardage throughout the season. The Freshman coaching staff felt that this year was very satisfying and rewarding by finishing 3rd in the SICA EAST conference. 70 Sports BASKETBALL The team finished 9-16 for the year. This was a 6th place in conference with a 5-7 record. The team consisted of 4 Seniors, 8 Juniors, and 1 Sophomore. In the Big Dipper Tourney at Rich South, Bremen won a consolation trophy. The outcomes several times were not known until the final buzzer sounded. We even had a couple games decided after the buzzer rang. One player was moved to the Varsity because of his outstanding ability. All the boys worked hard all season long and finished with a respectable record which included a 3rd place finish in the Andrew’s Tourney. The team learned and used several types of offenses and defenses and special plays which should help them greatly when moving up to the Varsity. Coach K. First Row: Managers. Ron Jablonski. Because of injuries, weight problems and lack of depth the varsity wrestlers suffered through a 6-12 season. There were several bright spots, however. Juniors Dave Engwall, Jack Rollins, Mark Schwartz and Danon Cameron had good seasons. George Vio-letto and Kevin Krygowski were the top senior wrestlers. The eight finalists competed and, through a point system, Mr. Hrkel became the champion and winner of an engraved pen and pencil set. William Brown (1953-1982) Bremen has always been an outstanding High School from its beginning. It has had outstanding leadership and a well trained faculty. It serves the community well , said Mr. Brown. He was a Senior class sponsor and member of the Math Dept, at Bremen. Being part of Bremen’s faculty since November 8, 1953, Mr. Brown has observed that the school has gone through many changes. Some major changes are the building additions, introduction of girls sports, study halls to no study halls, and back to study halls.” Aside from being a Math teacher, Mr. Brown was a varsity basketball coach (1953-1960), and made a contribution to the Bicentennial edition of Who's Who in Indian Relic”. This year he was a sponsor for the Senior class, rtt the end of the first semester he retired. Mike Kristan This past summer Mr. Kristan was invited to attend two camps for talented basketball players. The camps were at the University of Wisconsin and Concordia College in New York. Mr. Kristan felt that these camps were an enormous help to the athletes both physically and mentally. The basketball players who attended the Wisconsin camp were the top 125 players of the Chicagoland area, including Bremen’s Maurice Pullum. The same number attended in New York. Mr. Kristan’s most satisfying experience was, To watch over 120 basketball players work hard every day and never complain even while they were in the classroom.” Sue Boettcher Mrs. Boettcher has experience in acting which helps her as sponsor of the drama class. She recently performed in a play called Find Your Way Home” in Chicago. In the past, she has performed in one play at Hull House Theater and two plays at the Performance Community Theater. This is very important because the underclassmen are very seldom recognized. Often they must wait until they receive the credit they deserve. One of the things that the underclassmen excelled in was athletics. The fall was shining with record-breaking swimmers. The girls' cross-country team was sparked by underclassmen and managed to gain a trip to the state meet in Charleston. The winter was a successful season for most sports teams. The bowling team named Trish Borden, Diana Matz, and Chris Kreuz allconference. Sophomore Rhonda Bolda was chosen allconference for basketball. Winter's end means spring's beginning. After it began, many athletes wished that it would never end. The boys' sophomore baseball team broke a school record by going undefeated for the length of an entire season, capturing the conference title. The girls' sophomore softball team was also successful in capturing their conference title. The track teams flashed headlines bearing the names of Meshelle Wilson and Harlan South. Another outstanding individual in the spring athletic season was Mark Kramer, who earned all-conference status on the varsity level baseball team. Another reason why the underclassmen were a big part of the school year was for academic achievements. Joe Cursio was a state qualifier for the Bremen Chess team. Sandra Griffin won many awards and recognitions for her excellence in band, playing the clarinet, including a superior rating in the Illinois State Music competition which was held at Thornton Community College. Larry Jordan also received a superior rating for his solo. Renee Defay. Ron Simmons, Jeff Smaga. and John Hoyle all placed high in the SICA Science Fair. Renee also excelled in tennis and took first place at Bremen for her speech in the Voice of Democracy” speech contest. All of these individuals, plus the other members of the three underclasses, iave long lives ahead of them. Although they are now mere teens, they are the people of tomorrow. The underclassmen show up at just about all sorts of events including dances and sports. After all. they are a majority, and also a big part of the Bremen Spirit . The Sophomore class gave the Seniors quite a scare during Spirit Week, and next year’s seniors will be fighting hard. But right now. the underclassmen are the heart of Bremen High School. Sophomore Sophisticated Ladies A Sweetheart Dance couple- Denise and her date 119 Freshmen Do It Right Being a Freshman is always exciting. You meet new people and teachers and make many new friends. It is a whole different experience for us. You have a lot of fun as well as work. After asking some of the Freshmen how they liked being a Freshman compared to being in Junior High, we came up with these comments: “Being a Freshman is so much different than being in Junior High that it’s hard to really compare the two. There is a lot more work involved and it's a lot harder but after you've been here awhile and make more new friends it makes up for all the work.” There are a lot more activities here at Bremen that make it much more exciting than Junior High. I've been involved in a lot of different sports this year and I really enjoyed them all. Sheree Jarema making music. Diane Feil on Foreign Exchange Day. 120 Freshmen Freshman Fun Homecoming for the class of 85” was very exciting. They had a lot of enthusiasm for Spirit Week and also a lot of spirit. Even though they had a lot of spirit, it wasn't enough to take the title. Their totem pole took first place. The Freshman Class President, made this comment: During Spirit Week, the Freshman class not only learned how to work and have fun together but also showed their talents by taking first place in the class float beside winning the totem pole. They put great effort into their participation in classes sports and clubs this year and are going to put one hundred percent to make the next one even better.” Some other comments on the Freshmen’s first Spirit Week were: Spirit Week was really exciting for me. I took part in some of the events for our Freshman Class and I really had a lot of fun. I think I can say on behalf of all the Freshmen that we all had a really good time even though we didn’t really know what was going on.” Spirit Week was really different compared to anything we ever did in Junior High. Even though there was a lot of class rivalry and the Freshmen were the objects of many pranks, I think most everyone had a lot of fun an-way (especially since we got out of a lot of classes). The sophomore officers and I have worked very hard together as a team and I would like to think we made our sophomore year a great success for us all. We hope our Junior year will be even better. We can now look back on the beginning of our sophomore year and our accomplishments. We, as a class, participated in school activities. Take Spirit Week for example. Our efforts from the entire class, won us a second place overall. We even tugged our way to victory. I'm proud to be the sophomore class president, and with our class spirit, it will make my job and responsibilities much easier next year. THANK YOU.” Mary Yucuis Sophomore Class President Sophomores standing pretty. Running off to class. 130 Sophomores Sophomore Spirit Payed Off Homecoming for the class of “84 was very exciting. In the overall standings during Spirit Week, the Sophomores took second place loosing by ONE point to the Seniors. Some comments by the Sophomores about Homecoming and being a Sophomore. “I thought Spirit Week was very fun and exciting. There were many exciting events and the competition was very good. Being a Sophomore has some good and bad advantages. The good advantage of being a Sophomore is that we get to take Drivers Ed and Behind the Wheel. The bad advantage of being a Sophomore is mainly being called an Underclassman. Sophomore girls being timed in typing. Sophomores being instructed in Wood Shop. The interest in what class officers are responsible for has caused the upsurge in focus of attention. Spirit Week, the class float, and Promare the three major activities of the Junior class officers. Spirit Week is dominated by class competition and the officers must plan who will be assigned to which competition. Their decisions make the different between success or failure. The Prom is the biggest formal function held outside the school. It is an immense responsibility which requires a full year’s work. The planning involves booking a band and a hall, and choosing a theme and the order of para-phenalia associated with Prom. Dan Katzenberger- President Mark Klekowski showing some real” junior spirit. Mr. Floeck lending Eileen Doyle a helping hand. 140 Juniors Juniors Take A Stand In 82” During the course of the 1981-82 school year, many students in the Junior class achieved awards for their accomplishments. The awards varied from writing a paper to being selected to the All Conference team. Five students participated in a Science Fair held at Thornton Community College. Renee DeFay and Ron Simmons joined together to win a third place medal in the Windmill Building Contest. John Hoyle brought home a first place medal for a Mouse Trap Car. Jeff Smaga won a third place ribbon for a Bridge Building Contest. In the sports spotlight, Tricia Borden and Chris Kruez were selected to the All Conference Bowling Team, and Diana Matz earned Honorable Mention. Chris Kruez also earned an Honorable Mention for Volleyball. Renee DeFay received first place standing in the Voice of Democracy” speech contest. Juniors 141 Juniors Jazz It Up! The Junior Class was very active in school activities this year. After a busy Spirit Week, the class officers began planning the 1982 Junior-Senior Prom activities. The Prom Assembly is to be highlighted by a fashion show and the announcement of the prom court. The Class of ’83 certainly showed their spirit this year! A spokesman for National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). stated To be designated a Commended student is an outstanding attainment, deserving of public recognition. Another worthy recipient of a Bremen spotlight was Jim Kmet. who received an award for Student of the Month. This program was first instituted just this year, and it was a huge success, gaining respect by both the teachers and the worthy students. To become a Student of the Month the student must excell in academics, athletics. non-athletic school activities, community service, or any other activity worthy of mention. Along the line of spotlights was the hosting of the District 228 College Night on Wednesday. October 28. from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Students from the four district schools (Bremen. Hillcrest, Oak Forest, and Tinley Park) and their parents were invited to attend this event which provided current college-related information on seventy-five colleges and junior colleges. Gayle Siedlecki displays her artistic ability. Cathy McErlean ... Hey! What can I say? Our Seniors are the best! 150 Seniors Seniors Hard At Work Our Senior year was full of activity. The beginning of the year started off great as the Seniors were victorious during Homecoming week. Once again, the Class of '82 showed its spirit in winning the overall trophy. The Braves win against the Hillcrest Hawks was another high point for us. Since the beginning of the second semester and the setting in of good weather. Seniors have realized how close graduation is. The looks on the faces of Seniors who will be leaving Bremen to attend college and join the working force is that of anticipation. As Freshmen we came to Bremen expecting great changes from our grade schools. We did not know what to expect, coming to a new school with new teachers and classmates. Looking back on the past four years, many changes have taken place. Many new friendships were formed in the high school years that will last the rest of our lives. Our teachers have helped us in many ways in the last four four years. Many career and college decisions have been influenced by our teachers. A new program began at Bremen while we were Juniors. Career day. sponsored by Guidance director Homer Hulfachor. had two successful years and will also continue for many more years. Speakers from fifty different areas came to talk to Bremen students and help them make career choices. Seminars were also held involving financial aid, how to choose a college, and whether to choose a college or trade school. A new program was brought to Bremen in the 81-82 school year. Advanced Placement Calculus and Advanced Placement English are designed to help the college-bound students pass an examination to give them credit for college level courses. During the past year, the Senior Class lost a person who was a very hard worker and a truly good friend. Roger Joseph Powers died on November 28, 1981 of chronic asthma, a disease which he had been fighting since the age of five. Roger was involved in many community and school activities. He played Midlothian Wildcats football for three years and also Midlothian Little League and Boys' Baseball, where he was selected to All-Star teams twice. He attended St. Christopher School where he played on the basketball team and also on the school's first soccer team. When he came to Bremen. Roger was a member of the Chess Team, and also a member of the Echo Staff, writing sports stories. Echo editor Randy Browning said. The Echo Staff suffers a great loss. We thank him for his valued efforts which will always be remembered. A member of a family of nine. Roger will surely be missed by all of them. Furthermore, he will be missed among the members of The Class of '82. Frank Sendra doing some badly needed body work and repairs to his car. Hard to believe, as it may be, Seniors too crawled and toddled around. At one time they couldn't speak but only gurgled and cooed. Advertising is one of the many ways in which local merchants express their eagerness to help the students. Our local merchants employ many, many Bremen students with a variety of jobs ranging from fast food restaurants to banks. This involvement shows the concern that merchants express for students. In turn, Bremen students are eager to hold responsible jobs and help contribute to their community. Above: Lori Williquette working at McDonalds. Everyone had to do their part. Even the littlest jobs make up an important part of the Yearbook. BREMEN SPORTS F«s8i - WSffStsw ” Ss3r§ a wsBBgmsmsB smmmflm INDIVIDUALS BRING BREMEN HONOR __________s Pom Pons lend their support Bremen's Pom Pon and Cheerleader squads are considered by many to be the most active participating in inner and out of school activities. The Pom Pon are a part of the halftime entertainment during all home basketball and football games. They also active in the pep rallies during spirit week and the activities themselves. In addition to participating in school activities the Pom Pons also volunteer to help during Lion's Day. The girls work from six AM to one AM collecting money to help the Lion's program for the blind. The Cheerleaders are involved in three sports, football, basketball, and wrestling. Unlike the Pom Pons however, the Cheerleaders attend every game and provide entertainment and spirit before and during the game. Like the Pom Pons, the Cheerleaders also participate in other inner school and out of school activities. Spirit week found them cheering, making skits, and participating in the events. Apart from their regular duties, the fall cheerleaders spent a morning collecting donations to support the Knights of Columbus program for the handicapped. The winter cheerleaders were not to be excluded so they donned their elf outfits and helped Santa meet all the children. The hours spent by these girls can not be counted. They are a constant support not only to their teams, but to their school and community.
