Bits about Our Building When and where does a beautiful school building such as this one you are dedicating today begin? With the passing of the bond issue? With the start of construction? While these were important milestones in the school’s progress, more vital were the hopes and dreams of a small group of your fellow citizens, beginning as far back as 1948. In December of that year, Fred Goebel, our township treasurer, called a meeting of grade school board of education members and principals, to consider what might be done for our high school students. This group interested others in working for the annexation of this district to Thornton. Although this move failed in June of 1950, the group did not give up. In July of that same year, an election to organize a high school district of our own was successful, and the next month the first school board was elected. Yes, bond issues and building plans were essential to this school, but back of them were the hopes and dreams that today have come to full reality. For such a new high school, we have a mighty big and healthy youngster. Our building cost nearly a million dollars. Its equipment is valued in excess of $175,000. It is staffed by an administrative and teaching staff of 37, plus a cafeteria, custodial, and office force of 15. Most important of all, it is the educational home of 730 of our boys and girls. 25 Years Of Tradition Our mascot “Little Joe” has been with us almost since the school opened. At first he was portrayed by a male who would enthusiastically stir the crowd. After several years the idea of placing him in the tiles in front of the gym was accepted and shortly thereafter he also joined us on the floor of the gym. Since then the girls who have represented Little Joe are: 1959 - Sandy Bonaker 1960-61 - Cheryl Gardner 1962 - Penny Simpson 1963-64 - Rachel Mueller 1965 - Betty Burfeind 1966 - Becky Pelke 1967 - Pam Moore 1968 - Char Saylor 1969 - Sherry Obey 1970 - Patti McHugh 1971 - Barb Porter 1972-76 None 1977 - Kim Reeks 1978-79 Maridonna Figliulo 1979 - Sherry Hawrysio A Changing View . . . Our building has gone through many changes since it first opened its doors in 1953. The original building consisted of the rooms surronding the courtyard, the large gym and the Industrial Arts hallway. At this time, the library was located in what is now known as 120 A. B. C. Home Economics was in Room 133 and 114. and the teachers’ lounge was in the present custodian storage area. It was not until the fall of 1958 that the stage, lower locker rooms, lower gym and pool area were finally opened for student use. Almost eight years later in April. 1966. the structure, as we now know it. complete with the library and guidance area, was dedicated These were the only structural changes m the building until the new room additions off the library and storage areas for Drama and Physical Education were completed this past fall However, although the exterior has remained the same, the interior has been undergoing many changes from a new gym floor to new lockers, floors, and even color coordinated classrooms. When first built. Bremen was a new show place viewed by many high school representatives across the country- the innovative design and expensive cost gave hope to many districts who had been unable to afford the old. conventional method of building schools. Bremen, the flag-strip school of the district, still continues to change and improve and surprise almost everyone except those people who 25 years ago had hopes and dreams.
