V 25 Years Of Tradition Our mascot “Little Joe” has been with us almost since the school opened. At first he was portrayed by a male who would enthusiastically stir the crowd. After several years the idea of placing him in the tiles in front of the gym was accepted and shortly thereafter he also joined us on the floor of the gym. Since then the girls who have represented Little Joe are: 1959 - Sandy Bonaker 1960-61 - Cheryl Gardner 1962 - Penny Simpson 1963-64 - Rachel Mueller 1965 - Betty Burfeind 1966 - Becky Pelke 1967 - Pam Moore 1968 - Char Saylor 1969 - Sherry Obey 1970 - Patti McHugh 1971 - Barb Porter 1972-76 None 1977 - Kim Reeks 1978-79 Maridonna Figliulo 1979 - Sherry Hawrysio A Changing View . . . Our building has gone through many changes since it first opened its doors in 1953. The original building consisted of the rooms surronding the courtyard, the large gym and the Industrial Arts hallway. At this time, the library was located in what is now known as 120 A. B. C. Home Economics was in Room 133 and 114. and the teachers’ lounge was in the present custodian storage area. It was not until the fall of 1958 that the stage, lower locker rooms, lower gym and pool area were finally opened for student use. Almost eight years later in April. 1966. the structure, as we now know it. complete with the library and guidance area, was dedicated These were the only structural changes m the building until the new room additions off the library and storage areas for Drama and Physical Education were completed this past fall However, although the exterior has remained the same, the interior has been undergoing many changes from a new gym floor to new lockers, floors, and even color coordinated classrooms. When first built. Bremen was a new show place viewed by many high school representatives across the country- the innovative design and expensive cost gave hope to many districts who had been unable to afford the old. conventional method of building schools. Bremen, the flag-strip school of the district, still continues to change and improve and surprise almost everyone except those people who 25 years ago had hopes and dreams. Bits about Our Building When and where does a beautiful school building such as this one you are dedicating today begin? With the passing of the bond issue? With the start of construction? While these were important milestones in the school’s progress, more vital were the hopes and dreams of a small group of your fellow citizens, beginning as far back as 1948. In December of that year, Fred Goebel, our township treasurer, called a meeting of grade school board of education members and principals, to consider what might be done for our high school students. This group interested others in working for the annexation of this district to Thornton. Although this move failed in June of 1950, the group did not give up. In July of that same year, an election to organize a high school district of our own was successful, and the next month the first school board was elected. Yes, bond issues and building plans were essential to this school, but back of them were the hopes and dreams that today have come to full reality. For such a new high school, we have a mighty big and healthy youngster. Our building cost nearly a million dollars. Its equipment is valued in excess of $175,000. It is staffed by an administrative and teaching staff of 37, plus a cafeteria, custodial, and office force of 15. Most important of all, it is the educational home of 730 of our boys and girls. People make the difference .... Thomas Chochrek 79 9 3 In 1953 when the school first opened, there were only three classes. However, the responsibilities that usually belong to the seniors were there all the same. So when the officers: Pres. Al James. Vice-Pres Mike Holliday. Treas Arlene Palmer and Sec Marge Heitman took charge their senior year, they already knew what kind of responsibilities they would face. They lived up to their responsibilities and set an example for those officers to come. Although many officers have come through Bremen's halls since then, they all shared a common goal: to make Bremen a place to be remembered. There has been a Bremen Band ever since 1953. However the band itself has changed a great deal during that time The first change came in 1954 when the band first received their uniforms. The first stage band was organized in 1960 The current look of the Band today was acquired in 1965 when the band received their second uniforms which are now being used. When the first team played its first game, the With a record turnout of one hundred and five football aspirants cheerleaders had already spent many hours for the 1953 season, Coaches Callan and Lussow's Braves proved preparing for their first public exposure. Since to be promising material. Even though the Braves won no games, then the skirts have become shorter the their fighting spirit must be taken into consideration. Although cheers more athletic and the squads larger but this was written in 1953, the fighting spirit that they had is still in the enthusiasm has never changed. “We're evidence today. Since that first year of sports. Bremen has added from Bremen couldn't be prouder” is not only teams on all levels. Now instead of just the original five sports, a cheer, but the total feeling that our cheer- Bremen has tennis, bowling, cross country, swimming, softball, leaders help to promote throughout our golf and volleyball. We can sum up Bremen's sports by saying school. “We have arrived! fry =, Today Was Fun, Wasn’t it Friend? C'EST . oday was fun, wasn't it friend? When we let your Mom’s parakeet loose in the house, even though we did get into trouble. Today was fun, wasn't it friend? Especially when we went into the park and brought a picnic lunch. Today was fun, wasn't it friend? Even though the cake we tried to make didn't turn out like our Mom’s do. Today, was fun, wasn't it friend? When my Mom said that you could spend the night, and we were both so happy. Today was fun, wasn’t it friend? Like when we fell asleep together after eating all the popcorn Mom made for us, and talking about all the neat things we did. Today was fun, wasn’t it friend? Debbie Dempsey '81 When Bremen was first dedicated on November 8, 1953, it was a facility that was designed to meet the needs of the high school age students in Midlothian, Posen, Markham, Oak Forest, and Tinley Park. Since this time, as the communities increased, three other schools had to be built to keep up with these growing needs. So on Sunday, March 4, 1979, there was more than just a building to acknowledge, there was the work of many people who efforts had contributed to the sucess of Bremen. The original dedication was performed by Senator Everett Dirksen, just as many notables gathered then, so did many notables gather to rededicate Bremen on its 25th Anniversary. Past Valedictorians and Salue-tatorians were present to witness the dedication of the wall honoring their academic achievements. Plaques of the past Valedictorians and Salutatorians as well as pictures of the present students will be placed on this wall to encourage acheivement in the school academics. Also attending the ceremonies were special guests including original staff members, administrators and well wishers. The Bremen of today recalls many of the favorite traditions of yesterday-Little Joe, sock hops, proms, assemblies, hall decoration. and a willingness to adapt quickly to the needs of the community. 15 Isn't it strange in this modern day and place. Over 500 people attended the dance, the largest attendance ever known for a dance at Bremen. Queen Eileen Krygowski 1 reigned over the event, along with her court. Gail Holuj, 2 Sharon Bond, 3 Eleanor Carter, 4 and Maureen Bleck. 5 This year, the theme for the dance was the Roaring Twenties”, which included a “bath-tub gin, and the front of the gyrr decorated as an old time movie theatre. The event was one Bremen will never forget. The Day’s Events ftraitN’s t HOV.TH Bremen's 25th Homecoming was very sucessful this year. An effort was put forth by teachers, administrators and students to make this a very special Homecoming for Bremen, and they achieved their goal. One of the highlights of the week was the Talisman contest in which over 700 students participated. The whole week was a memorable experience. iitm ■SjggK The Week’s Events The week leading up to Homecoming Day was an experience to never be forgotten. The week included “Roaring 20’s dress-up day, class color day, the Talisman events, and many, many, other things. The participation in all these events were very large. Many students went into their “wardrobes” to find Roaring 20’s clothes, and many went out to get red, blue, green or yellow items for class color day which the freshmen won. The week was very eventful for both students and faculty. The Talisman Events Talisman events were the highlight of the Homecoming events. Talisman is an Indian good luck charm which is a name fit for our events. This will become a tradition at Bremen. Talisman events consisted of 10 varied events which went on Wed. of Homecoming week. Thurs. was the obstacle course egg toss day. Fri — tricycle race and tug-o-war against the Soph, and Jrs. Stalag 17 was another innovation in Bremen's theatre department. It was done with an all male cast and in the “theatre in the round style. The audience was treated to an unusual play that combined humor, drama and even a little intrigue. The seating on the stage afforded even the farthest seats to command a good view and easy listening. The experience was presented for 11 performances. Remember When The Dolphins is a sychronized swim team that puts on one water ballet show each year. This years Dolphin Show was Remember When ... It celebrated our school's 25th anniversary by featuring songs from the past years to the present, ending with a disco finale. The Dolphins also had an all guys comedy that everyone enjoyed. Although the attendance at the Snowflake Ball was at a minimal number, the people that attended the lance had a good time. The highlight of the dance was the crowning of the King, Ken Keskel and the Queen, Lillian 'arr. They were followed by their court: Colleen Cronin, Tom Chocerek, Maureen Bleck, Mark Egge, Betty Compton, Dave Kissel, Shelly Majchrzak, Mike Kendall, Ricky Fields, and Eileen Krygowski. The dance was sponsored by the National Honor Society and will hopefully continue for years to come. 33 34 Folk Festival The second annual Folk Festival was a big success. It involved the Spanish, French, German and F.H.A. clubs. It included many varieties of foreign foods and students participated in many different activities. They also had a guest who played the guitar and sang French songs. 35 This year's children’s show, “Cinderella and the Silver Slipper” was entirely a Senior directed production. The directors, Mark Schmidt, Karen indberg, Greg Olson, and Julie Katzenberger wrote, cast-ed, and handled every final detail having to do with the production. The production is designed to teach the Senior Thespians every aspect of the theatre, including direction. It is a large endeavor, and an experience to never be forgotton, not to mention headaches, worries, and nervous breakdowns! Cinderella And The Silver Slipper Winter Concert This year's Winter Concert was enjoyed by both students and parents. Selections ranged from the African gosphel, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord to the Christmas carol, Behold that Star”, soloist Lenard Spicer. The band and choir performed all of their numbers with a certain air of pride and enjoyment. 38 39 Story Theatre Director Glenn Haines turns to Bremen for requirements of graduation from Illinois Weslyan University. 40 CAST- Bob Anastatia, Cathy Mikrut, Phil Jacobs, Dave Cox, John Stemmlin, Jim Vacek, Donna Jel-lema, Tammy Wielkopolan, Jenny Wielkopolan, Laura Hill, Dan Wilson, Chris Sutherland. 41 Encore performance of spring musical before full house brings house total over 3000 who stood and cheered as Bremon presented their Easter epic ... JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Jesus Christ Superstar . . . A Very Special Story Worth The Telling. After looking through sixty-tive Doys for apostles and still short was just the start. They kept repeating these dance steps over and over. She kept yelling out the voice parts, then she just yelled. He made us dance on six foot wobbly platforms and do these impossible stretching exercises. It would have been easier to build Noah's Ark than this set. Not another costume change. Make-up definitely makes me break out. Two weeks and we're still on the second act. Ya know this story ain't too bad, and I kinda like the music. Overture. The house is packed. Superstar. Crucifixion. Superstar Reprise. Curtain call .... and everybody's standing. I knew we’d do it! After seven weeks of practice, building, dancing, and not sleeping or anything else, they brought in the pit band. No one is exactly sure where they found them, but they were great. We hid them offstage and quieted down the bass (again). After those long rehearsals and five shows, everybody was ready for the 15 family pizza and the cases of coke. Most even stayed for strike til 5 A M. and then went to breakfast. Looking back, it lots of new friends lots of long hours to do a lot of Superstar. It will also take a lot of time before it's forgotten. 47 The Gong Show 48 Bremen's Afro American Club sponsored its first Gong Show. The Gong Show consisted of 20 original acts. Our M. C. was portrayed by Chuck Streeter. Our Unknown Comic was portrayed by Tom McCarey. There was a tie for 1st place Cherry-Band - 50 dollars Young Eagle Cadets-Drill Team - 50 dollars Most Outrageous Act went to Tom McCarey for the Unknown Comic. The show proved to be a success and hopefully will be made an annual event. 49 Fine Arts The choral department at Bremen High School helped celebrate the school’s 25th Anniversary by presenting a Spring Concert. Featured were the three choirs along with alumni from the past 25 years. Highlighting the concert was ‘‘In the Beginning”, sung by the choirs and performed to the unusual feature of an electric tape. Many soloists, past and present, were featured. Salutes 25th The 25th Anniversary of Bremen High School was celebrated when the band performed in its annual spring concert. Gene Barnett, guest director from district 143, highlighted the concert by conducting the band in the Constellation March”. The stage-band, consisting of only select students from the band, was well received with their selections of Tambo” and Second Generation”. Other selections played by the band were Fanfare”, The Wiz”, and “Brassman's Holiday”. Also an impressive addition to the concert was the performance of 2 woodwind ensembles. The faces may change along with the fashions and the music-but the mood created each May for Prom is a special one that can be shared by all those who have ever attended whether it be 1954 or 1979. Many changes have occured since Bremen’s first Prom. In those early days, the juniors would spend many hours transforming the cafeteria or gym into a special time. Since then. Prom has moved almost every year- some being downtown Chicago in the hotels, others at country clubs and some even at reception halls. In recent years a dinner has also been served. Some traditions never change like garters, late hours, and getting up an hour after you've gone to bed to pack for the Dunes. 1957- A Night in Paris 1958- Moonlight in May 1960- Enchanted Island 1961- Sayonara 1963- Fantasia” 1964- Moonlight and Roses Queen Jerry Pocock (1) 1965- Three Coins in a Fountain Queen Delma Plowman (2) 1966- Queen Marge Swillum (3) 1967- Wind Song-Queen Wendy Dewey 1968- Taste of Honey-Queen Kathy Kane 1969- Camelot” Queen Roberta Soike (4) 1970- Legends of Love Queen Denise Coke (5) 1971- Color My World Queen Debbie Szymanski (6) 1972- Moments to Share Queen Fran Walsh (7) 1973- Forever In Love-Queen Florence Herrera (8) 1974- Till Eternity Queen Mary Ceja 1975- Stairway to Heaven” Queen Cindy Schering (9) 1976- We may Never Pass this way Again Queen Beth Biegel (10) 1977- Could It Be Magic Queen Alicia Harris (11) 1978- We can Make it Happen Queen Joyce Klekowski (12) Heaven Can be Anywhere This years prom was held at the Alsip Holiday Inn. You sat opposite me in the empty chair while I told you how I felt (You were very open and I told you so. Remember now?) We met once before across the room. You were talking with your friends while I mouthed the words I was afraid to say: I pretended you read lips. (Do you? If so, have you read any good lips lately?) We met once before in a crowded elevator. We stood side by side and talked in body language ... a sideways glance, an understanding nod, a friendly elbow nudge. All this I sent out to you and, to my utter shock and amazement, you actually replied ... the stutter in your smile the sigh in your nod the smirk in your voice (It was just like a movie) And we stood there in the crowded elevator, whispering “Pleased to meet you” out of the corners of our mouths, saying hello with our eyes again and again and again. Dwight Okita 1976 220 The Quest What is this world that awaits me? That pulls and baits me? What is this future that calls me? That traps and walls me? Can I break loose, can I be free. Can I declare my final degree? When will I know what I can do. When will I ever be given a clue? Can I resist, can I pull back. Can I fight it without clear attack? Answers I’m given, but none honestly. For no one on earth truly holds the key. Life’s not a game, so we've been told many a time to me, it’s played with rules, some of which we left behind. We fail sometimes to learn from mistakes of others, yet we must find our own ways and not those of our brothers. Some know not of square roots yet, still they've the biggest tree on the block. Learn this friend while there's still time left on the clock. Do not give up when you fail or be satisfied should you succeed, But search for a meaning and truth in all things which you believe.
