Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1973 volume:

2 3 5 Foreign Exchange Students Nancy Pochinskas represented Bremen High School during the summer of 1972 in Mexico. She lived with the Edward Palm family, in which there were two daughters, ages 15 and 12. (shown with Nancy) Although her home was in Mexico City, Nancy traveled to many different parts of Mexico: from the ancient pyramids of the Aztecs and Mayas (shown in the picture above) to the sunny beaches of Acapulco. “ didn’t go to school, but I learned much more about the people and customs of Mexico by traveling and seeing so many different aspects of Mexican life. My Spanish also improved. All in all, my summer in Mexico was a really great experience! Paula in France, Nancy in Mexico. A Mexican pyramid. After spending many hours enroute, we finally met our families in Lermont-Ferrand, a city about the size of Harvey somewhere in the middle of France. The name of the family with whom I stayed was VIEILLEDENT which means “old tooth . There were two girl's (15 and 7). I soon got accustomed to life in France. The hardest thing to get used to was lunch. In France, they take 3 hours for lunch and they use every bit of it. They serve at least a 7 course meal and they eat very fast, the mother cooks while the dinner is in progress. Breakfast usually consists of a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and a piece of bread with butter. Supper takes about an hour and it's about five courses. Normally I would get up at 7:30 for school. School lasted from 9:00 'till 12:00. At 3:00 we met and had excursions in the surrounding villages or did some other activity. The weekends were spent with the family, most French families go walking on Sundays. We spent the last week of our trip sight seeing in Paris and London. Then on the 31st we left Paris for home. t ff1 rh- . : ix:r Maria relaxing at home. Margarita’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amin. Maria Rosales, San Salvador; Margarita Amin, Columbia. Iam Maria Martha Rosales for San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America. San Salvador is the captial of the country and is pretty and modern. I arrived the 9th of January at 1:30 am and was greeted by my American family. They consist of my Papa and Mama Lichey, one sister, a brother in college, one small 3 year old brother, and a pet, Pretzel. I am very much a part of the Lichey family, my sister and I enjoy many good times together; instead of doing homework we have water fights, wrestling, helping each other with Spanish and English and a lot of other things that I cannot express. My own family consists of my parents, a married sister and brother and a brother at the university in South Carolina. I completed 3 years of Business College in December. My experience here will help me to qualify for the bilingual secretary job. I spent 10 months in New Hampshire last year as an exchange student. I had a great experience there and I hope to have another one here. So far I like Bremen very much; the people and the way of life. It is amazing how people can adjust to everyone, like they did to me. Central American Sunset. Iam Margarita Maria Amin, an exchange student from Colombia. The experience that I am having as an exchange student is fantastic. Besides learning your language. Iam also seeing the great difference between Colombia and the United States; life style, customs, and people. I am living here with the Giron family; which consists of my parents, Sandy and George. My family in Colombia has 9 people: my parents, and 7 children. We live in Medellin, the second largest city. Some of the customs are the same as those here, but other are different in my school. For example, all the students take the same courses, many schools are not coed. I chose to come to the U.S. for many reasons. First to learn English and secondly because this is such a big modern country. In the time that I have been here, I’ve visited parts of Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. All the people that I’ve met are veryr nice to me and make me feel right at home. I will always remember my family, my friends at Bremen, and this country with love. MR DIMNAN MR. KELLER MR. It was sponsored by the Student Council, and had a very good turn out. This year, the music was provided by the students instead of having a band. The students would bring their own choice of records. This gave the students a variety of music with which to dance. (Below) Wait till the girls hear about this. (Lower Left) HEY, HEY, HEY! (Below) What a bummer! College Night This year the district college night was held at Hillcrest High School on September 28, 1972. Representatives from colleges and universities in and around Illinois were present to distribute information to the students. Of Poems Youth and Spring This year’s Contest Play, a story of a high school romance through the seasons of the year, placed 3rd in the Conference competition, and 4th in District. Acclaimed by the judges for its excellent acting and choral variety and mobility, the play owed much to the artistic seasonal designs by Mr. Thies and his art students. Next year the Drama Department hopes to better the already fine beginning of this year. Oh, excuse me No it was my fault. Students rushing around, making tickets to sell, class floats, a big game to win, and then the homecoming dance. Saturday started out great with a big parade and a lot of proud students. The class of “73” was awarded first place for the class float which would make it their third year in a row. The football game was a close battle with Homewood Flossmor. Christmas % V N d Bremen’s new sound system was first put to use by Mr. Branch and Mr. Hollingsworth’s choir and band at the winter concert. The system’s fine quality could only accent the performance in duet singing that was exhibited by Sue Hofflander and Carolyn Hudson. Other duets and solos were performed by Ruth Brandsma, Penny Heffelinger, Rodney Penamon, and Howard Warden. Thanks to the hard work put in by the choir and band, the Christmas spirit here at Bremen seemed a little more “Christmasy”. 27 Janice Gustafson Glen Haines Abbott Costello, Joe Alt emus and Alan Barber. The Braves relied upon fine overall shooting, speed, and excellent teamwork on the court. The final team record was 13 victories and 12 losses. They finished 3rd in conference and also reached the final game of the regional tournament for the first time in Bremen’s history. Perhaps the major team highlights were the two victories over heavily favored Eisenhower particularly coming at the regional. The team's major shortcoming was probably their lack of consistent play throughout an entire game. They ran through many hot and cold streaks where at times they played near perfect basketball and at other times they were not so careful. The Fan-tasticks, Purlie, Sweet Charity, Godspell, and Twigs were some of the plays we went to see. We did a Bremen first by producing The Fantasticks in the choir room. We achieved 3rd in Conference and 4th in Districts with our contest play, Of Poems, Youth and Spring. We topped the year off with the successful spring play Tom Jones. Many laughs, tears, and much hard work went into producing an exciting year in drama. 101 Pep Club Officers — Claudia Bond, Judy Vaughn, Debbie Estep, Rosetta Rancatore, Maureen Cronin, Cindy Hallahan.
