He has come to. represent Bremen as an individual competitive school. Like all new institutions, we have had to build our reputation. We could make that reputation good or bad. We’ve made it good through scholastic achievement and athletic competition. In the five short years of Bremen’s existence, she has built her reputation; and now Bremen has truly come into her own. We have made Bremen a school to be respected by all that come in contact with her. It is to the students of Bremen, who have made her name known and respected, and to the leaders, without whose help we could not have gained this prestige, that this 1958 edition of the Arrow is dedicated. Page 4 MR. BIRKHEAO Superintendent In every good organization there is one person who takes the lead and completes the tie between leaders and student body. This responsible job at Bremen has been held for the past five years by our superintendent, Mr. Birkhead. He has done this difficult task successfully. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY The individuality of Bremen which demands respect was built only with the help and guidance of the leaders, our administrative staff and teachers. An institution is only as strong as its leaders so we can truly be proud of ours. BOARD OF EDUCATION Standing, Left to Right: Mr. Birkhead, Mr. Fassero, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Holl Sitting: D. N. They bought “elevator tickets , walked into wrong rooms, and carried on the traditional freshman customs. It became apparent, however, that this group would be more than just a class — it would become the pacesetters for Bremen. Looking back on the last four years, the class of '58 has led the way. This year alone seniors alone have held offices in the Girls’ and Boys’ Club, Student Council, Science Club, F.H.A., F.T.A., and Arrow. They have been active in many more organizations too; members of this class were to be seen in the band, choruses, and Fall Play, to say nothing of the Senior Class Play. The Athletic Department has always been of major interest to the Class of '58. Representatives have been found displaying skill and talent on the grid iron, the mat, the track, and the diamond. Our senior boys led the Bremen Braves to their first Conference Varsity Basketball Championship. Nineteen hundred fifty-eight is a magic number for the two hundred students of Bremen’s graduating class. To them, it brings back memories of that last year which will never be forgotten; memories of college entrance exams, scholarship tests, the excitement of the D.A.R. award, who was accepted at what college, Honors Day, National Honor Society, the Prom, and graduation. •ALBERT, FRANK B-Club 3,4; Football 1,2,3,4, Track 3 •ALBRIGHT, ALICE Cheerleader 1,4; Girls Club 1,2,3,4; G.A.A. 1,2; F.H.A. 1,2,4; Student Council 2; Class Sec. 2 •ALVERS, LYNNE Girls Club 2,3,4; F.T.A. 2.3,4; Library 1,3; G.A.A. 1,2; Chorus 2 ANDERSON, JANE Student Council 1 ANDERSON, JUDY Chorus 2; Science Club •ANDERSON, PATRICIA 2,3; G.A.A. 3; Dramatic 1 ANERINO, CORINE Girls Club 3; G.A.A. 4; F.T.A. 4 •ASHER, DAVID Science Club 4; Band 1 •BAUER, CAROL Girls Club 1; Chorus 1 •BERGER, CAROL Girls Club 1,2,3,4; G.A.A. 2,3,4; Chorus 1; F.H.A. 2 •BERLES, JACK Boys Club 1,2,3,4; Chorus 1; Holl monitor 4 •BLAKEMORE, WILLIAM Boys Club 1,2,3,4; Student Council 2 •BLANKE, SYBIL G.A.A. 1,2,4; Dramatics 2.4; F.H.A. 2 •BOND, JULIUS Track 1,2,3,4; Football 2,3.4; Basketball 3; Student Council 2; Boys Club 4; Science Club 2; Arrow 4; Wrestling 4 •BONOW, KAREN Girls Club 2,3,4; Arrow 4; Student Council 1,2; Chorus 1,2 •BORMS, CAROL Girls Club 1,2,4; G.A.A. 1,2,3,4; Bond 1,2,3,4; Student Council 1; Arrow 2,3,4; Nurse Aid 4 BOWERS, JACKIE Alpha Tri Hi Y 1; Choir 1; P.T.A. 1; News Rep. 1; G.A.A. 2 •BOWMAN, BEVERLY Girls Club 1.2, Chorus 1,2,3,4 Page 12 •BOYLE, KAREN G.A.A. 1; Girls Club 1,2,4; F.H.A. 2,4, Chorus 1,2 •BRADY, CAROL Girls Club 1,2,3,4; G.A.A. 1,2; Chorus 1.2,3,4; F.H.A. 1,2.4, Student Council 3 •BRINKMAN, LOIS G.A.A. 1,2, Girls Club 1,2,3; F.H.A. 2,3,4; Chorus 1,2; Student Council 1 •BROHOLM, JAY Science Club 1 •BROOKE, MARILYN Bond 1,2,3,4 •BROWN, DAVID Class Pres. 1, Chorus 1,3,4; Boys Club 1,4; Student Council 1; Science Club 3; Octette 3,4 •BROWN, GEORGE Basketball 1; Chorus 1 •BRUEN, JOHN •BURKLE, CLYDE Wrestling 1,2; Boys Club 1; Mgr. JUNIOR CLASS The 1957-1958 school year has been a very busy one for the Juniors. They have taken Constitution tests, written term papers, and acquired many scholastic and athletic achievements during this one year. They can also look back on the many games they participated in, the various dances they attended, and especially the Junior-Senior Prom. Most of them have class rings and realize by now they deserve being called upper-classmen. We wish them the best of luck in their next and last year. Now they are seasoned veterans of one year. They have learned a lot from experience which will help them in their coming years at Bremen. Page 43 THE ACADEMIC Considering the many functions of a school, the academic constitutes the major portion. Little Joe observes the conscientious students working tirelessly at their studies. His impression is that the students are devoted to learning and realize the importance of each step they take in school. Fortunately, Little Joe's impression is correct, and that whether in class or shop, the students recognize the academic achievement they may attain. This year Bremen has again, through the academic, provided the opportunity for students to make impressions and decisions about their life-time interests, professions and vocations. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT The Commercial Department offers courses which train its students to become skilled in a vocation. As a green hopeful. Little Joe appeared at the door of the typing room. By June, he was on his way to becoming a skilled typist. The students of Commerce learn to become able secretaries by learning how to take dictation, to work various machines such as the dictaphone, and the comptometer. MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Page 48 LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT As a freshman, Little Joe, used to say, “How.” Under the guidance of the teachers in the Language, he now says, ‘ How do you do? Our able teachers have prepared us for communication; oral and written. They have also enabled us to speak Spanish, and Latin. To accomplish this, we wrote reports, gave speeches, debated, studied the factors of journalism and grammar. It was a long and hard task, but we learned. Page 49 INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Boys at Bremen receive practical job training in shop classes. They draw blue prints, study machines, and since the addition of the new auto shop, take apart and repair automobiles. Many useful and attractive objects have been made by the boys in wood working. All of this experience is sure to come in very handy in any of the various positions a boy may take after high school. BAND The Bremen band has added a lot to the spirit of many gatherings. This spirit has been spread at football and basketball games and pep assemblies throughout the year. Besides all this, they have given us many stirring moments during the presentation of their numerous band concerts. Bremen’s spirit is truly exemplified in the music of this band. Mr. Paul Scharfenburg Page 52 MUSIC DEPARTMENT CHORUS The many Bremen Choruses lend their music at different times to such numerous occasions as the Fall and Spring Concerts and the annual Christman concerts. The Advanced Mixed Choruses also attends the Southwest Suburban Conference Music Festival. Under the capable direction of Miss Ruth Schmidt, the choruses have given splendid concerts this year. These classes provide important information for living a worth-while, full life. These classes succeed in giving us valuable, up-to-date information that can be used by all of us in our everyday living. Page 55 THE During the past year the Athletic Department became more than a name; it became an institution backed by more than 1500 energetic members. Little Joe led us to victories and---------defeats. Even though we experienced a few sad moments, the Braves walked on the Trail of Success. Aside from having a successful season, the Athletic Department brought about a sense of loyalty and school spirit in the students. We weren’t simply students of Bremen; we became BREMENITES. Both the Varsity and the Frosh-Soph tropies went to Bremen teams. This was the first Brave title. This year’s Braves possessed the magical qualities for a winning quintet: uncanny shooting ability, the speed of lightning, and the spirit to win. We were short, but we showed those “big boys that height is not a prerequisite for winning. The big game of the year was the Rich game in January. The Braves were losing with only a few seconds left in the game, but Rich Tindall got the ball. And as if directed by radar, the ball found its target, and Bremen won the game by only one point. In all activities of G.A.A., special emphasis is placed on developing skills and good sportsmanship; and of course, a lot of fun is had by all. Our organization has participated in G.A.A. activities such as playdays and workshops with other conference schools. The main idea of these gatherings is to share ideas and views on running a G.A.A. organization successfully. We have given and gotten a lot of ideas which will help to make our organization more efficient. We have attempted to the utmost of our ability to give you a great year book and a worth-while memoir of every Bremen student's year at Bremen. We have hit the interest of all students in our varying pictures and articles. There is not one student who doesn't have a personal interest in his school; thus, they have a personal interest in their year book. In order to earn extra money to give you a better Arrow, the Arrow gives Pow Wows and dances. These, of course, are side activities; our main job is to give you the best Arrow you’ve ever had. We believe the 1958 edition of the Arrow fulfills this requirement in all respects. From the executive staff, members and sponsors of the Arrow, we wish you the best of luck and happy memories through the Arrow. Because of the tireless work of its staff, the Echo was greatly improved. They met the all important deadlines to give us our papers complete, interesting, and on time; and they generally improved the type of article produced. We give credit to the executives, staff, and sponsor for the tremendous job they have done. THE ACADEMIANS These students are known as Bremen's Debate Team. They have regular meetings every week, and at the beginning of the year, elect officers. The students prepare the debates on the affirmative and negative sides. The most exciting thing of the year was the possibility of going to the down state tournament. Page 71 Sandy Bonaker Secretary Guy Molinero 1 st Vice President Preston Wakeland President Karen Tower 2nd Vice President Judy Erickson Treasurer The Student Council of Bremen has been a very busy organization this past year. In the fall, is sponsored Harvest Haze . During the basketball season several Pow Wow’s were also given by the Student Council. The organization sold Bremen Buttons, and book covers. It also held the annual Clean-Up Week . A major portion of the year was spent rewriting and radifying the constitution of the group. The organization also purchased a Brave uniform for a mascot for the athletic teams. The Student Council has accomplished many things, but it has not lost sight of the real purpose of the group — representing the student body of Bremen. Many problems have been solved through discussion, but no what matter the outcome of the problem, we all agree that the Student Council is an ambitious group. Every girl at Bremen is welcome to join the Girls Club, and each member has an opportunity to help plan its many activities, work on committees, and make the activities a success. These varying activities include a Get Acquainted Tea, Big Sis Tea, Christmas Dance, and Mother-Daughter Banquet. A Thanksgiving drive is also conducted each year. This year twenty three needy families received a huge Thanksgiving dinner. This year a new program of sending get-well cards to students at Bremen who have been sick for over a week has also been established. This year’s officers have done an excellent job. They have spent their time improving the Girls’ Club and planning activities which will satisfy the varying nterests of its members. BOYS' CLUB The Bremen Boys’ Club under the able leadership of its officers and sponsor, Mr. Cox, planned and carried out many social events throughout the year. Some of the more prominent events held were the Father and Son Banquet, gym parties, and Pow Wows. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the most select groups in any high school is the National Honor Society. This nation- wide organization has strict standards which it upholds. Students eligible for this organization must have good grades, outstanding character and the quality of leadership. This year a movie camera was purchased. It has been used to take movies of the games. The “B” Club sponsors an annual dance, “The Bee Hive Ball . At this dance, a queen is chosen from among five senior girls, who have been nominated by the “B“ Club members.
