GILBERTSON, SIl1IPI'1'llfl'lldl'l1f A fribnle of honor we wish Io pay To one who l'I1d!'lIII0l'S day by day To lnalce this school our home of dreams Whose memory ne'er will fade away. IIE HIGHEST satisfaction in life is to he found 11ot in getting but in giving. Ile who would get the most out of school must cherish the same ideal. The boy or girl who thinks first of the interest of the school, who is glad to assist in any project which will he of value lo it, who is jealous of its good name IS the one who will fmd school days both pleasant and profitable. For it is also safe to predict that boys and girls who have this ideal of service uppermost in their minds while in school will later become our most useful and worthy citizens. The high school days of the graduating class of 1929, sponsors ot this Annual are relegated to the past. But for them ll1e Annual will be a source of lasting satisfaction, because it will preserve to them memories of happy days and worthwhile achievement. Page 5 B. ll. S. THE BRECKONIAN 1929 Page G li. N EDUCATION is worth just the extent of change it effects in the activities and attitudes of the per- son educated. It is not a question of dollar signs, nor how well he has learned his daily lessons, nor what marks he has earnedg but what use each makes of his knowledge, and to what extent he is better able to serve society than the individual who has not received the same training. B ll S. TIIE BRECKONIAN 1929 PETER BOLKAN, Couell Huis Off to the Couelif' TIILETICS offer to boys and girls excellent oppor- tunities for developing, training, and controlling the physical part of themselves. But even greater values can be attained from participation in sports. There can come a determination to give one's very best in a con- test. a sense of justice in not wanting to take an unfair ad- vantage of an opponent, and an attitude of cooperation with team mates in playing under the rules of the game. These attitudes are not only desirable for living but will he equally valuable to one later in life. They are funda- mentals of good citizenship. CLASS MOTTO :-Not Evening, But Dawn. ! I Iage 18 B. H. S. THE BRECKONIAN 1929 Class Prophecy OME years ago a scene of stirring incidents or accidents happened to me that I feel worth while repeating. Of course it had to be in that fatal year of 1949. Upon the rumor that the South African countries were taking up arms against the introduction of fur-lined mittens, I was detailed to cover the situation. At New York passage was secured upon the Star Dodger, a marvelous dirigilile built by a certain Rice. Much to my surprise I learned it to be my old classmate and found him in the dirigible trying to find out what made the door slam. Natur- ally he guided me through his great creation and this is what I saw. Down in one end my old pal, John Waite, was operating the ship from his desk, under the title of Chief engineer. While we were talking, a sudden lurch told us we were on our way. That evening I dined in Miss Dorothy Hai-t's Floating Cabaret. Music was :fur- nished by the eight piece Nelson Family Orchestra, with Alice directing and Norman playing the fife. After dinner we were entertained by the Radio-vision, another of Rice's inventions, and more amazing things happened. First we saw Bud Norton de- cisively defeat Battling Cook in a fifteen round Tiddlewink match. Bud has been going hot lately and has fought his way to the heart of his fair lady, Miss Eliza- beth of the Jigfield Follies. Next the newsgrams startled us as We hcurd, N0f9d scientist lost at sea. Who could that be? Still more strange, King of Lithuania orders troops to field. Message signed by him personally. Being very tired I lay down on a soft bed prepared by an old chum, Margaret, now head chambermaid. The next morning we got off at London to stretch a bit and dropped into Ye Old Fashioned Salloon to absorb a few drops of tea. Imagine our surprise to find Kadock and Nordick listed as proprietors. Strofling down the street we noticed a crowd gathering and so paused a moment. It was Leon Davis doing his famous blindfold cigarette test. We all tossed in a coin when Helen Connelly passed the plate for him. As our time was up we re-entered the Dodger, and headed for Paris. Midway we were flagged by a taxiplane. It was Don Gore with Lady Audrey as his passen- ger. He stayed long enough to bum a smoke. Arriving in Paris five minutes later I went to Mademosille Schlotte's Art Shoppe to buy a roll of fill-um. Passing by a show house I noticed the headline feature, a Ukelle trio by the Dot twins, Doro- thy S. and Dorothea S. Back at the 'airport I noticed the Fin Twins trying to sell a prospective customer, Lucille Spaulding by the way, a new Ford Flyabout. Continuing our journey -over the Mediterranean we noticed a white object on the water. Waite-lowered the ship enough to pick Del. M. off an artificial iceberg where he had been fishing. At last we found the missing scientist. We arrived at Lithuania and were escorted to the palace and entertained, previous to the arrival of the king. Inez J. and Florence Ward did the Lowland Throw while Edith A. sang the popular hit, Why the King We-ars Suspenders. Hush, here comes the king. Everybody knelt, the queen was by his side, he seated her gracefully and did the same for himself. Why, it is Dean J. and Izetta Bronson. After renewing acquaintances, much to my dismay he -said his prime minister, Stella had called the war off. -Hill Elwin. l'1lp.L'u lil 13.11. S. THE BRECKONIAN 1929 History of the 1929 Class HE history of the present graduating class of 1929 began in the year of 1917 in the customary place-the first grade. The beginners of the class were the fol- lowing: Margaret Alzheimer, Dolores Finlayson, Dorothy Hart, Dean Johnson, Alice Nelson, Helen Nordick, Prentice Rice, Lucille Schlotte, Elizabeth Stoebe, Doro- thea Schmitt, and Jerome Winkel, all happy ignorant playmates. The Second grade was memorable especially to the girls who learned how to jump rope and other frivolous sports. Some of the class however had retained a few of their babyhood traits and one day the teacher tied Dorothy Hart's thumb up and Dorothy stopped trying to eat her hand. In the Third grade this group of eager learners received a happy-go-lucky classmate, Ephram Korsh, who presented himself in a bright blue sailor suit. Ephram stayed with the class until his Junior year. Doris Williams added another bit of brightness during the Fourth Grade. The Fifth Grade began with a very intelligent group of children and Lillian Fin- layson was added to the list. At the end of the year, the Fifth Graders had a great picnic, an unusual event, but the picnic was a failure, because some naughty little girls ran away from it and the teacher was left alone at the picnic. During the following year the group lost two dear classmates, Jerome Winkel, and August Pelvit to the Great Reaper. The Seventh Grade was a very eventful year because many of the girls joined a very active Camp Fire organization which continued for three years. Drawing was the chief indoor pleasure during this year but one day the class ran out of sub- ject matter-so a very appropriate subject was placed before the class-Alice Nelson. The Class in the Eighth Grade was treated to a new type of teaching-De- partmental-and the excitement of passing back and forth from different rooms, and having more than one teacher was never forgotten. And now comes the most interesting years of all. The four spent in High School. The anticipation of the class was greater than their realization as they found out dur- ing the Freshmen regime. Hill Elwin was President of the Class. Many events took place during this year-some happy and others sad, and of the sad, the greatest, was the loss of a beloved member, Richard Zarling. The Sophomore year found the advanced Freshies much more sedate and self- composed. The President of the class was Alice Nelson. Class parties were given during the year which were the chief enjoyment. The next year the class had taken an added prestege-They were now upper classmenf' The Junior class president was Dorothy Hart. The annual class play which was When a Feller Needs a Friend, was given with great success and the Junior Banquet to the Seniors was equally successful. At last the class has reached the final year in their preparatory education. The Senior Class president is Prentice Rice. The Seniors decided to edit an anuual this year and are hoping for its success. The class had a party and are looking for- ward to their class play, the Junior-Senior banquet, and Senior privileges. Great preparations are being made for graduation exercises, the biggest event for every in- dividual of the Class. Page 20 B. ll. S. Tllli BRICCKONIAN 1929 Class History of 1930 by Gretchen Headley The statement lnay be true that history often repeats itselfg that is in some cases, but l doubt very much whether the history of the class of '30 can ever be repeated. Our first year at school, we were all perfectly blank on all subjects and about the only thing that we knew when we passed into the second grade was to place our handkerchiefs on our heads and sing of the little wavelels. In the second grade we had the honor of a new student in our jolly crowd who was Josephine Matz, that being about the only ilnport- ant fact. In the third grade we were divided into the bees and butter- flies and some of the butterflies have fluttered ever since. In the remainder of our grade years nothing very iinportant hap- pened. VVe finally reached our Freshman year. Our outstanding color was green, and white was added because we were considered. as inno- cent. NVhen the Principal asked us if we had any conflicts we thought the faculty very inquisitive and suspicious to think we had any such savage traits. Our class president was Rose Cikanek. Then we became Sophonlores. VVe couldn't see why the Freslnnen were so childish. XN'e entertained the Freshmen at a hard time party. Many of our group were present at the lA'llt'I'llltlll,S llall. Our class President was Martin Hilt. Our .lunior year CZIIHC. The class play The Mununy and the Mun1ps, was a success. The Pep Squad contained six inelnbers of the .lunior Class. XVe entertained the Seniors and they. in turn, have en- tertained us. In all three of our years in lligh School we have con- tributed a great nulnber of the better players on both basketball and football teams. Our president for this year is Bernard Johnson. NVe are looking forward to the .lunior-Senior Banquet and Prom which is well under way. All of our pleasures have been successful in the past and we hope that our future will make all of out! pleasures successes. O N THE seventh day of September in 1927, the Class of 1931, then a bunch of giggling Freshmen, made their ,first appearance in the assembly. Class election was conducted by our advisor Mr. Makins. The results were: Joseph Vertin, President, Rodger Zimmermann, Vice-president, and, Thomas Meyers, Secretary and Treasurer. The big social event of the year was the Freshman-Sophomore party. Every- one went to the City Hall and after a few games they were supposed to dance. One or two got out on the floor, and walked on the girl's feet for a couple rounds while the others just sat and wise-cracked. Next was a Valentine party, which was held in the Community Rooms. After a few games, the boys left the girls to amuse themselves, while they explored the furnace room-the janitor suffered severely. The Class election this year was conducted by the advisor, Mr. Killie-. The re- sults were: Rodger Zimmermann, President, Gertrude Zarling, Vice-president, and, Geraldine Ott, Secretary and Treasurer. The Sophomores entertained the Freshmen at a sleigh ride party. After the ride, lunch was served at the Community Rooms. And so a very pleasant year passed: initiating Freshmen, having a good time, and occasionally studying. U -Rodger Zimmermann. Page 25 li. ll. VERY year a group of new Freshmen enter High School. How we all longed for September, for High School is something different. We all determined, when we left the Eighth Grade, not to make any mistakes, like most Freshies do when they enter High. But alas, on the first day everything went wrong, and we were laughted at for everything We did or said. All during the year we have been knoCked at, either by the teachers or by upper classmen. At last we organized and elected the following officers: George Holmgren, Presi- dent, William Holmgren, Vice-presidentg Milton Peterson, Secretary, Marjorie Ber- risford, Treasurer. Our Class advisors are Miss Johnson and Mr. Rulien. In December we were invited to a sleigh ride party by the Sophomores. Seem- ingly all the Freshmen had a good time and hope to return the party in the early part of April. Very few of the Freshmen have been together since the First Grade, but we all hope to graduate together. -Harriet Rothwell. Page 26 M! 2744 lf' l3. ll. S. Tllli BRICCKONIAN 1929 Football 1 928 HE past season under Coach Bolkan was successful in every way. Coach Bolkan has been with us four years and is more efficient than ever before. Regular practice was called the first week of school with seven letter men re- porting for duty. This gave a good nucleus to work from but the difficulty lay in finding the other four men and a few substitutes. Outside the ldttermen, the ma- terial was very meager indeed, but the best was made of it and the performance of every individual was more than expected. A remarkable record for endurance and physical condition was established by this team in that they played nine hard games and made only two substitutions dur- ing the whole season. One reason for this was that they did not have any substi- tutes to use. The opening game was played with Fergus Falls at Fergus and resulted in a 6 to 6 tie with the lighter Cowboys the aggressor through the entire game. Fergus picked up a fumble to score their touchdown. The next Saturday we entertained the Lidgerwood team here and won from them by a 12 to 0 score. The game was featured by the smooth end running and blocking of the backs. The Hillsboro team was easily defeated the following Saturday by a 25 to 0 score. Ilere the team demonstrated as smooth a working offense as they did all year. On October 13 we played Wheaton at the Wilkin County Fair. The game was a close, hard fought game that was full of thrills. Our aerial game paved the way for our victory although the ball was carried brilliantly for nice flashy gains. The final score was 12 to 0. Page 27 B. H. S. TIIE BBECKONIAN 1929 Then came the battle with the giants from down the river, Moorhe-ad. They haven't been beaten in the last three years of football competition and it doesn't look like they will be beaten very soon either. The Cowboys, however, gave them the best competition they had all season with the exception of their Fargo game. Moor- head scored in the first two minutes of play, but from th-at time until the end of the half Moorhead was unable to gain much ground on the fighting Cowboys, while Breckenridge took their turn at gaining ground and brought the ball to the nine yard line once and fumbled. The game was played hard because three Moorhead men were carried off the field while the eleven smaller Cowboys were all going strong at the end of the game without a substitution. The score was 26 to O in Moorhead's favor. The first clash with the Wops from Wahpeton was a characteristic Breck- Wop game with both teams fighting desperately for the advantage. Breckenridge scored first on a brilliant march down the fie-ld which terminated in a short over the line pass from Norton to Waite for the counter. Davis kicked goal. In the final minutes of play the Wops scored on a shoe-string pass which caught the Cow- boys napping. The try for point after the touchdown was broken up by the Min- nesotans and the victory was ours by a 7 to 6 count. We next journeyed to Wheaton for the second game of the season with this team. The Cowboys were off color in this game, as is evidenced by the fact that we had no difficulty in beating them the first time. Neither side scored until the last part of the fourth quarter when Wheaton blocked one of our punts which rolled back of the end zone to a safety and the gong ended in favor of Wheaton by a 2 to 0 score. On Friday, November 2, Benson, of statewide fame as a football winner, was played by the Cowboys for the first time in B. H. S. history. Little hope was held out for the victory for us, but the battling Cowboys gave them plenty to think about when they got started. Benson took the ball down the field for a nice con- sistent gain during the first quarter, only to be stone walled on 'the one yard line where Breck. kicked out of danger. In the second quarter the Cowboys made the greatest offensive march of the season when they took the ball on their own 8 yard line and in a series of line smashes, end runs, and forward passes they took the ball down the field for a touchdown-a march of 92 yards without being halted. In the second half the quarter size of the Benson team started to tell and they scored two touchd-owns to bring the count 12 to 6 in their favor. Those boys knew they had been in a football game. The final game of the season was the annual Armistice day game with Wahpeton. The day was nice and a record crowd was out to witness Wops attempt at vengence for the deafeat the Cowboys had administered earlier in the season. Wahpetron showed great offensive ability in the first half and succeeded in .scoring a safety which gave them a 2 to 0 advantage in the first half. In the second half the Cowboys started finding themselves and advanced the ball down the field to within scoring distance where on a terrific off tackle drive Flynn took it over for a touch- down. The try for extra poifnt was missed, leaving the score at 'the end of the game 6 to 2 in favor of the Breckenridge Cowboys, The season was a very successful one, especially considering the shortage of ma- teriat which handicapped us all through the season. We won 6 out of 9 games and outscored our opponents by a 74 to 54 count. The following players won letters in football the past season-John Waite, Dwight Norton, Tom Flynn, Joseph Vertin, Norman Nelson, Kenneth Jones, Robert Wentworth, Hill Elwin, Donald Gore, Dean Johnson, Loran Cook, Leon Davis. lxllgtl ZS B. E, Meanwell of the University of Wisconsin, Dave McMillan of the University of Min- nesota, and Francis Stadsvold of the Unifversity of West Virginia. After leaving the University Mr. Baikon accepted the postion of Athletic Coach for the High School of Rawlins, Wyoming. Heretofore there had been no football team in the Rawlin's school, but under the supervision of Coach Bolkan and the splendid cooperation of the team they were able to take 5 out of 7 games. In bas- ket ball the team won 23 out of 27 games, were District Champions and were in thc Semi-finals for the State Championship. Coach Bolkan became a member of our faculty in 1925, in which year tho foot- ball team won 5 out of 7 games, and the basketball team won 16 out of 20 game-s, also the District Championship. The season of 1926 and 1927 the basketball team succeeded in scoring 18 out of 21 games. In 1927 and 1928, 5 out of 8 games were won in football, and 12 out of 16 games were won in basketball. In 1928 and 1929 we won 6 out of 9 games, and in basketball we broke even by winning 9 games and losing 9 games. The total number of games in basketball that were won in the four years- were 78 out of 102 contests and in football there were 41 games played. Out of that num- ber we won 26, lost 12, and tied 3 games. The student body of B. H. Tllli BRICCKUNIAN 1929 on Basket Ball 1928-Z9 HE season of 1928-29 was started with the loss of 4 first string letternien from last year's team, namely Del. Zehren, Howard Wilson, Elroy Schwankl, and Leo Alzheimer. This necessitated building up a lot of new material. The seasons record was perhaps less impressive than any season the Cowboys have had under Coach Bolkan's regime, which is the last four years. The record is not at all bad, in fact it is just exacty average, 9 game-s won and 9 lost. The 'team had more than its share of hard luck this year on account of sickness. In the Hillsboro game we were forced to play without our high point man, Flynn, and consequently lost the game by one point. In the second Wahpeton game Flynn and Wentworth both were under a physician's care and weren't themselves at alF,and consequently we lost by 3 points. At the tournament wc lost NVcntworth by illness, and Waite just got out of bed after a week's illness to play the game. Had we not been crippled these games very likely would have come out differently. At that we outscored our opponents 360 'to 381. Right here we want to give recognition to and express appreciation of those who came out for practice regularly and gave the first team opposition, which is so necessary in the building of a basket ball or football team. They are the unsung heroes of athletics. The following played in one or more games: Hill Elwin, Harvey Burke, and Donald Gore. The following did not play on the first team but were faithful in practice: Edwin Hoverman, Kenneth Jones, Arthur Leonhardt, Dean Johnson, Russel Beeson, Bernard Johnson, Leonhard Radeke, Delbert Manikowski, Norman Nelson, and Loran Cook. Few attainments are more valuable than the ability to think clearly and then express these thoughts in a convincing manner. Ideas are really valu- abie only when they can be expressed. Debating requires a clear head, sound judg- ment, and self-confidenceg it should therefore receive much greater interest and loyal support since these are the qualities which are essential to the effective par- ticipation in any of the activities of a citizen in a democracy. Paige 35 li. ll. S. TIIE HRECKONIAN 1929 Ye Merry Commercial Students T the beginning of the school term in 1928 Miss Johnson suggested in thei Commercial classes that we organize a Commercial Club. The suggestion was taken up and at a meeting the club was organized. The following officers were elected: Elizabeth Stoebe .. ......... President Helen Nordick .... ...Vice President James Adams . . . ....................... Secretary Hill Elwin .................................... Treasurer The programs which were included in the meetings were organized by members of the club appointed by Miss Johnson. The monthly meetings were very interest- ing, very he-lpful in the Commercial work of Miss Johnson's classes and we hope that the commercial members will continue with this club next year. The Letterman's Ball The basketball and football lettermen of the high school were hosts to a very cleverly arranged ball held at the city hall on Friday, May 4, 1928. The decorations were very representative of a flower garden. The ball was one of the first of its kind in this city and 'it has been made an annual affair. The programs were also very cleverly arranged, Miss William's Orchestra be- ing engaged. After the program dances had been completed which was around midnight, a delicious lunch was served in the community rooms by the mothers. After lunch everyone went back up stairs where dancing was again continued until about one-thirty when everyone departed after spending a very delightful evening. unior-Senior Banquet The Seniors of 1928 were the guests of the Junior Class on April 28, 1928. The dining room of the Stratford Hotel was converted into an ocean vessel by unique and fascinating water sketches. The memorable eve-ning began at seven-thirty with a banquet. Rose Cikanek and Marcella Redlinger as head seamen led their crew of sailors without mishap through the dangerous fjords of waiting on table, After a delicious three course dinner the toasts began. Dorothy Hart, as toast- mistress, called upon the following: ' Farewell .............................. Dwight Norton Embarking .. .... Leo Alzheimer, Senior President Seasickness . ....... Mr. Gilbertson, Captain Miss Lucille William's orchestra furnished music for dancing immediately follow- ing the program. Tllli BRECKONIAN 1929 Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot HE BRECKENRIDGE High School Alumni! What pride we all take in belong- ing to this organization! And why not? Do we not boast of being the only active association of this kind for a number of miles around? All through school we look forward to being one of the alums , just as you Seniors of 1929 are looking forward to itg and there are plenty of good reasons why you should, too. When you are graduated from high school, many of you will be separted. In fact, most of you. Some will go away to college, others to work in different cities, and some will remain in the old home town. After being separated from the gang for many months, and in many cases years, won't it be a great pleasure to come to an Alumni Ge't- To-Gether and renew your acquaintances with a Do you remember when and such '? Indeed it will. Charles Holmgren was our first alumnus and was graduated in 1903, From that year the membership in the alumni association has been steadily growing, and we hope that the members of the future will be as loyal as those of the past. A spring banquet has been held for the past several years in honor of the class graduating at which time they become members of the Alumni. Dancing and cards usually follow the banquet. For the last four or five years it has been customary to have a Home-Coming party on December 26. At this time a large number of the members are usually home for the holidays and everyone greatly enjoys these Get-To-Ge1.her parties. These entertainments are made possible by raising money in various ways, such as, benefit shows and dances, food sales, etc., together with the annual dues of 51.00 per member. Plans are being made at the time of writing for the usual spring banquet which will undoubtedly take place some time in May. We hope that every Senior will be there and in that way designate that they are going to start out right by being pres- cnt. We welcome you to our organization and are glad that you will soon be one of us as we know that you will do your utmost to keep the B. H, S. Alumni alive. -Laurel Heathcote, '24, Page 310 li. II. S.
