PLAINVIEW: Conference play was begun with a bang by the 35-7 defeat of Plainview, The Bucks ran the Bulldogs ragged during the first three quarters and then let the second string finish up the job. Carpenter and Sandefer paced the backfield by racking up 255 of the 287 yards gained rushing, Dick Carpenter 34 - Fullback Jesse Chaney 65 - Guard Jerry Cramer 71 - Tackle g x i i John Cotten Sonny Everett Wayne Gibbens 82 - End 76 - End TO - Tackle LEVELLAND: The powerfulBucks, displaying the class which has rnade them the most feared team in Texas football, fought from behind in the closing minutes of play with a twenty-five yard touchdown pass and conversion to tie under- rated Levelland 13-13. Watts took the ball, pitched-out to Harris who handed off to5andefer, Sandefer threw a beautiful pass to the two to Beasley who fell over the goal. Harris kicked the tying point. LAMESA: The Green and White boiled back from the 13-13 with Levelland to score in every period while presenting a solid defensive wall to the Tornadoes to win g oing away by a score of 35-O, The regulars handed it to the second string who polished it off in style with Cotten's touchdown and conversion in the last two minutes of the game. The Steers were certainly not to be under-rated, but were out-classed by the spirited Bucks who effectively avenged the Steers 7-O victory last year. SNYDER: The Tigers held the Bucks scoreless for the first quarter before the inevitable happened and the Buckaroos ground their way to a 42-13 decision. Everett, Cramer, Pevey, Payne, and Watts were credited for outstand- ing defensive play, while Carpenter was the game's leading ground gainer. Pevey and Watts a re on the bottom layer, Harris and Jones on the second, and Cotten and Payne look on d u ring the Big Spring galile, Beasley, Chaney, .Tones fblocking the Lionj, Cramer, and Harris carrying the ball. SWEETWATER: The Mustangs, geared to a pitch that schoolboy football teams can seldom be inspired to reach, powered their way to an 18-14 victory over the Bucks, The Mustangs held the Green and White scoreless during the final half to overcome a 14-6 lead held by the Bucks at the halftime. Thus underdog Sweetwater served Brecken- ridge their only defeat of the 1954 season, VERNON: The Bucks pulverized the Lions, 35-O, with a brilliant defense and enough speed and passes to blaze into the State AAA play-offs, Buckaroo substitutes played on offense throughout the final quarter and added a touch- down on a fumble recovered by Taylor. The Green Shirts snared five Vernon passes, partially blocked three Lion kicks, and ran back three other punts for 117 yards in achieving this victory. Payne turned xlllain and swiped two Owl passes, returning one nineteen yards before being downed. Pevey,Craxner, Chaney and Hamilton aided imrneasurably in the Buckaroo de fe ns e, while Jones turne d in some top offensive work Larry Munnerlyn eo - Guard Jerry Payne 58 - Center W . L. With Lufkin leading 7-0 Carpenter made the Lirst Buckaroo touchdown with an eighty yard run. Cotten slithered the breath-taking extra point between the posts. The second touchdown was made in nine plays with Watts diving into the end zone for the actual tally. Cotten converted with another high and wobbly job that had Buckaroo fans gasping. The Bucks were advanced into the finals by this victory. Scene in Baylor Stadium: Hamilton tacklingg Cramer, Pevey, Watts, Payne. 5' 4 M t?f,,,fg , , ,uunwf 'EU . Carpenter, although failing to s c o re, was the leading ground gainer. Sandefer was credited with the most magnificent play of the season when from a pitch-out on the twe nty, he started around right end, found it impossible, and reversed his field to make an estimated llO yard touchdown r un. He was assisted by crisp blocks by Pevey and Payne, and Cotten kicked his twelfth straight goal of the year.
