HARRELL, e leading Brecken- ridge attorney-at-law, became a member of the present board in 19385 was elected president soon afterward, and has served very competently and intelligently as leader to the present time. MR. B. C. MORGAN, Vice-president, was elected to the board in 1938. He is the local manager of the WF. 6- S. Railway Company. His business experience and general interest in public affairs have made him a levelheaded board member. MR. I. A. BATES, local manager of the Lone Star Gasoline Company, became a mem- ber oi the board in 1934 and has the longest continuous service record of any of the present members. His daughter in East Ward sees that he takes an active interest in all school affairs.. MR. C. I. O'CONNOR, attorneyot-law and rancher, was elected as a member of the board in 1938. He has always taken an active interest in the operation of the schools and is keen-ly interested in them and in the schooling of his younger daughter, a student in junior high. MR. W. I. RHODES, independent oil opera- tor, became a member of the board in 1939. His only question concerning any matter that comes up in board meetings is What is best for the school? With this principle in mind he votes his intelli- gent opinion on the subject at hand. MR. C. K. WEST, an independent oil opera- tor and president of the Chemical Process Company, came on the board in 1938. He has a double reason for being inter- ested in school affairs-a daughter in South Ward and also one in lunior High. This interest is manifested helpfully in every matter that comes before the board. MR. I. Q. CORBETT, rancher and feeder of fine cattle, is the newest member of the board, having been appointed in 1941. His previous experience as a board mem- ber in Caddo and his interest in his youngest son, a member of the 1942 win- ning Buckaroo football team, make him a valuable board member. MR. C. W. WULFIEN, secretary of the board, is also the assessor and collector of taxes for the Breckenridge Schools. He is looking forward to the time when he will have a very personal interest in South Ward in the person of his small son. I f 'WH'f-ffm. .:,y W, N, .sg Q-og. 11 I MISS Pmcunno MRSkMHXwELiL MR. This course is designed to lay the groundwork for more extensive work in electricity, and to give the student a clear idea of what makes our bells ring and our lights burn. The Woodwork classes, conducted by H. C. Kennedy, have done more than their share in Breck Hi's war effort. The classes have made hundreds of scale model airplanes for the govern- ment, and their latest project has been the construction of games for army camp hospitals. f-r...., ,. ,A if , ' ,2 .J-A W1 I L- . fl s ii - - ' Wg . Composed of six basic divisions-Land, Air, Sea, General, Production, and Community Service, the Victory Corps provides a method of showing every student the way in which he may make a specific contribution toward winning the war. A new organization in Breck Hi, the Victory Corps also combines active training with a program of instruction to show teen-aged students of the high school more about their prospective military careers. This new type ot training has proved beneficial to both pupils and sponsors, and has done much to bolster wartime activities in Breckenridge High School. s L Y P I1 Of vital importance to modern warfare is the airplane. Vir- tually every boy in Breckenridge High School is interested in some phase of aviation as it applies to everyday lifep but because of the rigid entrance requirements, only a small number of stu- dents have qualified for entrance into the Air Division of the Victory Corps. Mr. Curtis and Mr. Hallauer head this group, and their prime objective is instruction in all branches of aviation. if i iw- The members of the Community Service division of the Vic- tory Corps are trained to do office Work, help in the high school cafeteria, make bandages and do other services for the Red Cross, as well as perform many other worth-while services to the community. This group is supervised by Miss Wisdom, Mrs. Thomas, and Mrs. Smith. l'L .' ' Jil. +A- The Land division, under Mr. Burkett, Mr. Kennedy, and Mrs. Burkett, offers instruction on all branches of the United States Army for those who are prospective soldiers. This program enables students upon entering the army to choose the branch for which they are best fitted. Shown above are two phases of army routine: military drill and communications. The Sea division is similar to the Land, inasmuch as it also prepares students for careers in its own particular branch of the armed services. Many high school boys now plan on entering the navy after graduation, and for their benefit the Sea group endeavors to present information covering Whatever grounds are necessary for the prospective seamen. fl tt Mlyff it 1 W. A 1- Q, ',1f4 , CURUNATTON OF THE QUEEN The High School Auditorium was jammed to capacity 'on the night of March 26, as an admiring crowd watched Frances Wright Walk onto the stage to be crowned Buckaroo Queen. The coronation proved to be one of the most impressive and elaborate in the school's history, and the Buckaroo staff, under the direction of Mrs. Mac Smith and Mrs. Lace, outdid itself in designing and executing the circular setting for the stage. An innovation was the ramp running the complete length of the center of the auditorium, on which the favorites and their escorts made their way to the stage. This, as Well as the circular stage, indirect lighting glowing from White pillars, and huge gold notes on a background of white satin on blue, gave the event the air of a Broadway production. Announcer for the evening was Christine Abernathy. The Great Lord Chamberlain was Iames Dixon, and the Crown Bearer was Ann McAaron. The setting, as well-as the Queen and her court, left nothing to be desired in the way of an ideal Coronation. l I 1 J tr 'Tf Q 5 ill? 4 N , L I It 5 L A , ' 9 T1 fl r 1 .Intl ,. t 'Al 'il :lim ami! lit! -ill if f sq , f gg ..Q,':g, ' 45' ill, 1' , V W, WPNATLS up, Heil, HAZIE! COACH ECK CURTIS So much has been said in praise of Eck Curtis, and he has so many achievements, that it is hard to draw a thumbnail sketch of him in one paragraph. In the eight years that Coach Curtis has been in Breckenridge, he has produced teams which tive times have advanced to the state play-offs. This is a record of which any school may be proud. But, proud as We may be of him as a coach, we are doubly proud of him for the sense of sportsmanship and fair play which he has instilled into every boy with which he has ,had contact. Breckenridge points with pride to Eck Curtis: the best high school coach in Texas. -I LINE COACH G. B. MORRIS This was the last year that Geeber was on hand to help turn out another fine Buckaroo squad. Soon after the start of the season he was called for service in the Army Air Corps at Lubbock. However, while he was here, he did his best to lay the groundwork for the great team that Breckenridge had this year. It was due to his untiring Work with those boys on the line that the Buckaroos were able to master their powerful ground offense. Breck Hi will long remember Cf. B. Morris for the work he has done here, and it is hoped that he will be back as soon after the War as possible. if cs.-.. A , 0 ali ' ' -'Y l CAREY COX CRUSE DIXON BUCKAROGS This year, Breckenridge High School turned out one of the greatest teams of its history. Powered by a fleet, hard-charging backfield running from their tricky T formation behind an impregnable forward wall, the Buckaroo team went far in the state football race. The team did have an unusually good season. They were defeated once early in the season and tied with Abilene, but for many, many weeks thereafter it was Breckenridge all the way. They won the district championship with apparent ease, although all the Buckaroo boosters real- ized that behind the smooth-running team lay day after day of gruelling practice and hard, dirty, sweating work. The Buckaroos then defeated Waco in the bi-district game and Lufkin in the quarter-finals, and were finally defeated by Austin in the semi-final stage of the race. To us the Buckaroos represent the very finest example of what a good, clean, hard-hitting, sports- manlike team should be. To Coach Eck Curtis and his fighting Buckaroos, Breckenridge High School owes a great deal more than can be expressed in Words. The Bucks were leading at the half, and the gamellwas much closer than the 25-14 score indicates. The Bucks ran hard, plunging plays, but were unable to stop the seasoned Coy- otes' vaunted aerial attack. This early season defeat led most sports writers to overlook the Buckaroos as possible contenders for the state title. BRECKENBIDGE 7, ABILENE 7 The Bucks next played Abilene to a sevenvseven tie. They started rolling in the second period with a pass interception by Dixon on the Eagles' 23-yard line. Big lack Ray carried the mail over for the Bucks' only tally of the game. In the closing minutes of the fourth period the Buckaroos threatened by three pushes toward the goal, but the drive came too late. This tie further cinched predictions of a gloomy future for Breck I-li's team. Paul takes over in the Austin game. X P Q 'J C -al? in il ff' O LUKE MINCI-IEW RAY BOWEN BRECKENRIDGE 26, LUBBQCK U The first big victory of the season was at hand for the Bucks when they met Lubbock in Buckaroo Stadium on October 9. Playing brilliant ball throughout the entire game, the Buckaroos crushed the overrated Westerners by a count of 26 to O. This game gave the first indication that we had a fair passing attack, and Carey for the first time proved his ability as a broken field artist. This was the game in which the Bucks first discovered that they really had a ball club. BRECKENRIDGE 32, STEPHENVILLE O Breckenridge played its first district game in Stephenville. lt rained throughout the game and the field was a mire of mud and water. By smashing Stephenville 32 to O, the Bucks showed that they could play ball on any type of field. The end of a fifteen-yard sprint. .- 9 -qs My 'i .ty i ---'fm N 'QM M, ,AF , -A A... . This game was won with a minimum of effort, and Rangers lone tally came when they passed a long, high ball to the end zone. By this time the Bucks were in their stride and well on their way toward a district championship. BRECKENRIDGE 37, WEATHEBFORD O Breckenridge had its first taste this year of gas house tactics when we played Weatherford. However, matching them with an eye for an eye, the Bucks pounded their opponents with a 37 to U victory. The game was not won, however, without injuries. lack Bay was temporarily put out of com- mission and was not able to play as much as usual in the following two games. This was a different story from the l94l game, which gave many Buckaroo fans near heart failure. However, this year Coach played everybody on the bench except Dr. Wray, and there was never any doubt about the final outcome of the game. George goes up. 9 GALLAGI-IER GRAY GR BRECKENRIBGE 60, CISCO O The Buckaroos went wild again when they played the Cisco Loboes on Thanksgiving Day. This was the game that sent Breckenridge to meet Waco in the bi-district playoff. The Bucks made another race track out of the field as they ran, passed, and plunged their way to a 6O'O win. BRECKENRIDGE 27, WACO 21 For the fifth time in the last eight years of Coach Curtis' management, the Breckenridge Buckaroos advanced into the state playoff. The Buckies met the Waco Tigers on a cold, dry afternoon in Buck- aroo Stadium, and proceeded to roundly outplay and defeat them in a 27-21 game. The game was not as close as the score might indicate, for the Buckaroos were leading by 21 points in the final quarter when they relaxed and allowed the Tigers to slip in two touchdowns. However, this last minute drive, which had several thousand fans on their feet in a frenzy, bogged down and the game ended with the Buckaroos in possession of the ball. The Buckaroos had a hard fight, but it was their ball game allthe way. The team of Ray and Carey combined to spark the great Buck running attack, and the Brecken- ridge team simply would not be beaten. Bugs skirts right end. EEN MEHAFFEY 3' ' 4 B? A All ....,. Confident of victory from the moment they arrived in Breckenridge, the Lufkin eleven had a sad, sad surprise in store for them. The Bucks played superb ball throughout the entire game, and they deserved their hard-earned victory. They were prepared for the game both mentally and physi- cally, and the great backfield functioning perfectly behind a solid forward wall could not be stopped. BBECKENRIDGE 7, AUSTIN 28 ln Austin, the Buckaroos met a team that was riding at the peak of a highly successful football season. The Maroons were in perfect physical shape for the encounter, while the Buckaroos were seriously handicapped by the loss of Norman Carey, Breckenridge's master at broken field running. Austin functioned perfectly, and for the day, their long-legged, lanky backfield men were too much for the gallant Bucks. They bowed to the team that eventually became State Champions, and, although they lost, the Buckaroos realized that they had a great season and a greater team. Norman takes it over. 3 y I P . 1 r,.. s 1 56- . PHYSICAL EDUCATION This year, for the first time, nearly all students of Breckenridge High School were enrolled in physical training courses. The boys' classes, supervised by Coach Eclc Curtis and Mr. Lawson, consist of daily calisthenics followed by the running ol an obstacle course. The day's exercise is rounded ott by 20 minutes of vigorous football. The girls' classes, supervised by Miss Wisdom, have participated in body build- ing exercise and have been instructed in First Aid by Mrs. Mable Thompson and Mrs. Hemphill. These courses are doing much to pre- pare the boys and girls of Breck Hi for active military service. , :QQ -'1 1 f X K H I Nah Q n 46 Q 'ff-ta, K+ rv. Editor Pat l-lenry's originality came in good stead as he capably directed the efforts of his staff toward a better yearbook, While Business Manager Bob Mosley did an excellent job of raising enough money to put the Buckaroo over. Frank Dunigan Was a capable and hard-working assistant editor. Much of the credit for the Buckaroo should go to the expert photographer, Rex Cantrell, and his assistant, Billy Tom Price, who took, developed, and printed most of the photographs in the book. As circulation managers, Billie Faye Williams and Effie Birdwell made it unsafe for any student without a subscription to be found on high school hill. Five of the most efficient members of the staff were the class editors: Senior Editor lo Ann Elliott and her assistant, Beverly Cain, who also served as typisty lunior Editor Gene Ann Gregory, Sopho- more Editor Betty Williams, and Post Graduate Editor Frances Ball. Frances is also responsible for the successful handling of the military section which is a job that carries a lot of responsibility. Doris Gracey and Milton Stewart, as co-editorial editors, spent many an hour Wfacking their respec- tive brains attempting to get the right thing said in the right Way. As a grand art editor and a swell sport in general, Barbara Young was an editor's dream come true. She had what w s perhaps the hardest job on the staff, and carried it through with great success. - , er t ' of fai ul workers was Sports Editor lohnny Clarke, who is responsible for that big at se i , da Hood a Glen incent, lr., who as booster editors spent many weary after- , i n ' m cka Booster Club I N t, u a as i 'o ' g d more than capable Faculty Advisor Mrs W.
