He was coming back to Old Breck Hi To be graduated sometime in May, Vie know his heart with joy was filled, As he looked forward to this day. He was proud of our Buckaroo team And backed it even to the very end He had a real sportsmarfs heart and soul And tried every game this year to attend. My friendgyour friend-was loved by everyone, As he could make and win his friends By proving to them his real worth Vl'ith loyalty and fairness clear to the end. i God came and took him from our midst Into a fairer home far up above, To be followed by our love and faith, XYhere he may learn of His Great Love. -FRANCIS E. BARNES In Memory of Herman Truee Shipley Born August 25, 1911 Died December 1, 1929 VVell, old pal, they came and got you, To take you to that heavenly home above, Where the days are sure to be bright and sunny lYhere you, too, can share His wonderful love. l miss you, old pal, long for you here again, That we may laugh together, sing together, just run another race, side by side, Binding our hearts, in true friendship together. Gee, old pal, those good old days back home, ' Wlhere we played our first games together, And then we came to the Sunny South XYhere we have always chummed together. But they had to take you away, old pal, just when we need each other more than ever- They came and took you away from us Never to return to us-gone from us forever. - Old pal, even though they've taken you away, There's a place you have filled in my heart That is sacred to true friendship only, VV here the memory of you will always stay! never to part! 1FRANCIS E. XYhen it comes to legs- She's the winner. John Gilbert is a screen lover, But when it comes to a real lover, XVho should I choose? It's a tussle, But I think I would select XYebbie Russell. Rudy Vallee can surely sing- That's nothing, so can Helen Kane. But in choosing I would say Doyle and Ina with their HEY HEY. Our cuty Johnson was born a vamp, By her Alice XYhite is the tramp. Cuty's curves are here and thereg Oh gee! Alice, you look so bare. Everyone raves about Greta the Swede, But this high school is not in need. For with that Sparks Sister combination, XYe can always create a great sensation. Ole Breck-Hi has a Fatty Arbuckle In our Tubby with his chuckle. He makes a perfect lover, too, For Helen tells him what to do. One who beats Joan Crawford's smiles Is our darling Pansy Lisles. Tall, slender, and so petite She excels all on the silver sheet. Now that they pull down the curtain And the picture is off the screen, Aren't you more than certain That this writer is off her bean? -Dah! Campbell In Our Hzglz Srfzool Hall of Fame In our High School Hall of Fame, I wonder who'll take the pain To introduce our studes one by one? All right, I'll do my best, then run: Into the niche of yonder wall, Is our faithful Nita, so tall. She dug and toiled for the Annuals name, Then she was censured, talked, and blamed. The picture of that handsome boy Is no other than our brave Troy. He was the captain of the '29 team, And in our light he was a brilliant beam. Then on yonder shelf so high, Vllho may be seen by the passer-by, Stands the statue of Boon, the great, The best backheld in all the state. In this building of high school fame, Toward the center stands a little dame. Oh yes, I can see a crown on her head. Hjeanette is the beauty, so the Seniors said. Here is her lady-in-waiting, so sweet, VVho has everyone beat for the neat. She is the most popular in this 'fAlma Mammyf' Yes, it's no other than our dear Sammye. There are the laurels of Garland fright endj, XVho all the girls in Breck-Hi would send Notes of Love describing themselves. He's so important we'll reserve him two shelves. Nawl that's not the Army or Navy, They're the admirers of Bedford the lady. The most sentimental I really believe, For she's always got so many deceived. Page 55 In Our Hzlgfz School Hall qfFame-C0m'z'nuea' Now here is our Youth, Maxine by name, VVho has won from Breck-Hi renowned fame. She is the daughter of a famous physician, And her life has fulfilled a great mission. This is a cartoon by Jack the artist. In his classes, he was always the smartest. Now, in his life of painting and art, Some baby is playing an important part. That silver vault holds the jewels of Helen. No, they're not from XVoolworth's or McClellan. She married Ernest Thompson, our Tubby. XYe know he made her a wonderful hubby. This picture is of our famous Dave, Over which all the girls do rave. No, he wasn't famous for a Chicago gunner, But for a Buckaroo interference runner. There is the medal of our good sport, KYho always had a boy at port. One in XYichita, Abilene, and here. I know you think Lala Eern's a dear. Now, give fifteen for a girl named Ruth, For she's peppy, you can tell the truth. She won her triumph at a football game, That's why she's in our Hall of Fame. This IT stuff originated from Elinor Glynn, And Clara Bow was the one to win, But she had not seen La Verne our dear, Really IT is a shame, now shed a tear. Here-'s the profile of Bus the HIT boy. IYe beat Elinor Glynn in all her joy. Bus is really the better ideal of HIT. Elinor, you better take up socks to knit. In Om' Hzlgffz School Hall qfFame-C'0fzfz'nzzed Another niche in our Hall of Fame, A boy timid and sought for in vain. He played his part in football this year. It's Harold Griffin. . . tBedford's dearD. Our witty, clever, young man so jolly Is none other than Dick Holley. He has an answer for every word, But his answer is always absurd. Here is a talkie of Tommy Nanney. He did not imitate Al Jolson in Mammy. He sang of his love, of his work, of his play. No, don't stop when you hear him, better run away. Vlihat ho! there hangs our dear Sybil, So many of the boys enjoyed her giggle. She was very clever we must admit, And at home she never had to sit. Graceful Lowell, put him there. He's the boy with such pretty hair. As an actor, he's just grand. That's a fine place for him to stand. For nonchalant this girl we'll choose. She's indifferent, never has the blues. VVe'll hang her from this little bolt. Of course, you know, she's Dahlias Holt. A statue of James is this. Many girls have thrown him a kiss. The whole school elected him, To represent vigor and vim. This concludes our Hall of Fame, Though there are many I didn't name. All are from dear ole B. H. S. XYho is the most famous? You must guess. -Dahl Campbell Page 56 Page 57 Ifzfr0zz'u0z'1zg Jlfe EFORE turning over this sheet I beg of you to glance not only at the writing on this page but at the words. It is an excellent opportunity to write in this book, and especially when one is prepared. XYhy shouldn't I be for I have had nothing but time to burn. Sometimes I think I will disband altogether simply because I have been so insignificant. I sup- pose I must believe as the people in Rome do for it is impossible to believe as my surrounders. You seem to think that I do not need any of your time, but you need me to develop another corner of you. Better take advantage of me before it is too late. The Harmony Girls have made use of me. XYhy don't you others fall in line? How shameful, there wasn't enough room for their picture in this beautiful book. There should have been for these girls are continually before the eyes of Breck-Hi. They make their Harmonious appearance not by their voices but by their many social events. Now glance over to our Languages. They have no time to give me, but they apologize, because this year of '30 has been such a rush year. You Girl Reserves have justified my definition by your strong organized body of diligent workers. Yes, I am the Organization of Clubs speaking for myself. I issue interest aside from the studies. I bring you in contact with the stu- dents, and teach you the ways and means of working together. I give you a reward of credit which helps you considerably in obtaining your diploma. I am able to realize why the Hi-Y, Science, Four Plus Four, and Glee were not able to put my picture in this section for the number of pages were limited. The first that came were the first to be served. I am all clubs, therefore I think one is as important as another. I'm for all. All should take advantage of me. The Bnfkzzroo JUANITA FREIZMON HIQLEN MCCORMICK MRS. R. S. CLIFT Editor-in-Chief Business Manager Sponsor HE 1930 Buckaroo Staff has realized to the fullest extent that in the course of time many changes are wrought. A bigger and better annual had been thoroughly planned only to meet with disappointment from disapproval. VVhen the staff resumed their duties in the fall of '29, the Board of Education exposed their many reasons for having the school year book reduced two-thirds in size from heretofore. The budget for the preceding volumes of the Buckaroo has been around three thousand dollars, while this eighth volume has been set to a budget of two thousand dollars. Regardless of the many obstacles, we have revised, schemed, cut, and left out until we now have before you the efforts of this '30 staff. The motif of this book is Youth which is carried throughout the book in soft pastel shades of blue, gray and pink. The fountain symbolizes the f'Foun- tain of Youth in Breckenridge High School. Xlle have added to the modernism of this book by using the futuristic plan of Writing on the division pages. The three Youths on the dedication page were elected to represent all Youth to which this book is dedicated. From our boosting of the younger generation, we hope it has inspired you to carry on those ideals of-YOUTH. To all of you who helped this book along during the darkest moments, we sincerely express our appreciation. To those in the school not on the staff, we wish especially to thank Adelle Mings for her miles of club poetry, Inez Blackburn for her endless typing and Ralph Ball for his many favors. They have gained their place through assiduous work of the body and mind. Coach Shotwell's boys have fasci- nated all Texas with their machine-like perfection in team work. CQLD cloudy morning ushered in the 25th day of October, 1929, which was the greatest day for Breck-Hi in the past six years. Yes, our Buckaroo boys defeated the Big Dam Loboes in a clean, hard-fought game, by a score of 21 to 0. B. Magness led the score with two touchdowns. Graham scored the other one, and A. Magness kicked all three goals. Not one time did Cisco circle T. Carey's end, not once did Cox miss his many not once was Thompson carried out, not once did Griffin pass badly, and not once did VVohlford miss a play in his territory. It was the Hghtinest Buckaroo eleven that ever took the field. P. E. SHOTWELL Coach M. The 40-to-7 win was the most crushing defeat that the Buckaroos ever handed the Bull Dogs. The first half was tightly contested with McCarty's touchdown for Ranger. This little stunt awakened the Buckaroo eleven to the fact that they owed the Bull Dogs something so they put forth the greatest defeat in history. Every- one played a good game, and when our offense began clicking in the second half, the backs just could not be stopped. ' B. L. The first was made on a left-end run for thirty yards by B. Magness, and the second was a flat pass from B. Magness to Graham. Thompson, Pruitt, and VVray led beautiful interference. Some two thousand spec- tators saw the Buckaroos batter the Port Arthur Yellow Jackets all over the field, but in vain. Of course both teams battled furiously but the Buckaroos held the whip-hand although the game ended in a tie, as did the season. The severe cold weather of sleet and snow did not in the least hamper the wonderful punting of B. Magness. His passing was also outstanding, despite the fast falling snow. One pass lacked only a few inches of the goal line, but those Jackets were determined to hold us to a zero score. The team played excellent defense, as can readily be seen by the small score. The leading de- fensive player was Pruit, while R. Carey followed closely, busting up that jacket line. Cox and XYohlford said, They shall not pass, and evidently meant it, for no one gained yards at these two posts. Garland Carey was like a stone wall down at his end of the line. Vffray was consistently driving plays back for no gain. Griffin whirled the pigskin perfectly even though his fingers were freezing. Despite our unsurpassed offense, our first downs, our ground gained, and our penetrations, the game ended in a tie. That, as destiny must have planned, was never to be played off. XYorse than that! It resulted in a co-championship, but mentally we have our goal in knowing that we could beat the Yellow jackets in a play off, and in knowing that the State's eyes regard us as the State Champion team. Wie are closing the most successful season we have ever experienced, having won twelve games and tied one. And though we are still smarting from the jacket refusal to play us, we must be good sports, offer no alibi, but pray for another crack at them in the future. It was definitely decided that we would share the championship with Port Arthur but we refused the silver football. Page 74 Page 75 Uur Bef! Right now is the time we've hoped for Right now is the time to begin. Let's forget all else but iight, Never stop until we win! It's not personal glory, Or who gets to start the game: It's not self outstanding, Or earning laurels of fame. It's those souls toiling, working, Tired, yet not stopping to rest, Each one laboring, tired, and weary. Yet each one giving his best. Right now is when folks judge usp Yes, it's our judgment day. Can we forget our team and coach, And give not our best to the fray? lYe won't forget our faithful coach, So confident and believing, too. I'm going to fight and give my best, For that's what we all must do. Maybe, we'll sit on the side-line, XYarming our part of the bench, But being a sport is giving your bestf This way, we'll win, it's a cinch. -Hazel Davis. Dlkffliif Jlfeez' CRIPPLED Buckaroo five entered the district meet at Stephenville, but were victors in spite of their handicap. A Round Robin tournament was held and Breckenridge defeated Stephenville and Cisco consecutively, having been forfeited a game by Mahan. Much interest was aroused when Mr. Berry, the tennis coach, concocted the idea of having a series of tournaments, one of which was to be played each week. Every afternoon at the sound of the school bell, six peppy maidens rush to the courts where three heated matches begin. The three winners of these tournaments will represent the Alma Mater in the County Meet. Very few matches with other schools have been played, but this group of lassies have not been beaten once. It is believed that in this l'racket there will be a championship team. Page S6 '1- I I 4 Q l I K ' ' 1 ' o . 1 ' ' ' ' I 'i. ' s W o 1. I A I 1 , ' 1. . 1 ' ' 'I 1 X '. '-x . 1 ' , x . .1 i., .
