The Brecksonian Staff of Breckenridge High School Breckenridge, Michigan presents the 1964 Brecksonian Table of Contents Dedication--2 Sports--15 Administration and Faculty--5 Organization --31 Activities- -45 Underclassmen--57 Seniors--77 Closing--92 Mr. Ralph Preshaw is a native of Kansas, but has lived most of his years in Michigan. After moving to Detroit at the age of 15, he attended and graduated from Detroit Nortem High. His freshman year of college was spent at Purdue University, in Lafayette, Indiana. Then he transferred to Albion College in Albion. With a major in business administration and education and a minor in Spanish, he was graduated W Dedicate to- You , 2 Above, Mr. Preshaw explains some government terms to Lois Miller and Sharlerie Matthews. Right, Lecturing while sitting on his desk was a favorite of Mr. Preshaw. U t . Ptesfiflbw' from Albion with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Preshaw taught at Zeeland, Michigan for his first two years. After spending a summer teaching in a Detroit school, he moved to Ithaca. He remained in the Ithaca schools for six years, and then retired from teaching altogether. For five years, he was employed by the Standard Oil Company, working between Ithaca and Ovid. Mr. Preshaw then started his own hardware store, which he operated for five years. Although he trusts us, he always kept an eye on us while we were taking a test. But, in 1956 Mr. Preshaw came back to teaching, and lucky for us, at B.H.S. He has taught many classes while here, such as Government, American History, Speech, Drivers' Ed., World Geography, and Social Living. He was football and basketball coach for six years but retired from coaching as of this year. As we look back over the years, we remember Mr. Preshaw as a teacher who was always willing to chaperone a dance or party, or be adviser to some struggling class. We shall remember him as an adult who was never in too big of a hurry to stop and help us minors with a kind word and a helping hand. We, the annual staff, and the whole student body could find no better way to show our appreciation to him than this small dedication. Thank you, Mr. Preshaw for everything. Part of his American History class discover some interesting facts about the Civil War. Fo'i w tiL The 1964 Brecksonian--for many of us, it will be the last one. We, the staff, attempt every year to bring out the new events and yet keep in some of the old traditions. We're hoping you will enjoy our pictorial diary as much as we enjoyed presenting it. Our work is through, but we won’t relax until our most important critics give us their review. These critics are you, the students. With these thoughts in mind now, take a moment and look through our book. We hope you will be as pleased with the 1964 Brecksonian as we are. 4 BI-IQ Mrs. Daniels, left, and Mrs. Morford, right, are a necessity to the B.H.S. system. Bernice was elected by the student body on October 4, 1963. Bernice has been active in her four years at BHS. She has been in Pep Club and FHA, in which she served as song leader. In her junior year she was in the chorus of the operetta and was chosen, along with Lewie Pavlik, to lead the Seniors of 63 at their commencement exercises. Her senior year she served as a librarian, a varsity cheerleader, and president of the choir. The crowning of the queen was done the same way as last year. No one knew who the queen was until that special moment at half when she was crowned. The young ladies walked onto the field as the band played Autumn Leaves. The court was introduced and then the big moment came, the announcement of the runners-up and last the queen. The court and the queen were introduced to Seminary and then escorted off the field. 47 The tension and suspense were all saved for this night. QuutfO'MjC Swinging High, the musical comedy hit especially written for high school production, was staged in the auditorium of Breckenridge High School, on March 20th 21st, 1964. Swinging High deals with the arrival of the new principal, Mr. McDuff, at Cooper High School. At first his McDuff Plan outrages the students and unnerves the teachers. However, he meets with an accident and returns to Cooper High with a new personality and a new McDuff plan. McDuff brings his reign of terror to Cooper High. The Chorus and those portraying students were members of the music department. They joined in a number of catchy songs. While the colorful scenery, which was done by Richard Hynes, Len-nie Coulson, and Linda Gronda, set the background . The entire production of Swinging High was under the guidance of Mr. Bordon Vandemark and Mr. David Grahek, with members of the Breckenridge Dance Band, under the direction of Mr . William Yeager. Hi ya, baby. Diana tells Andy how to decorate a gym for a dance. 52 f-liCjk Ed Wolfgang played the part of Mr. McDuff, the new principal. Miss Pinkerton, the very prim teacher, was played by Beverly Sebring. Miss Ramsey and Mr. Blum, also teachers, were portrayed by Jane Oberst and Dennis Wolfgang. Shari Colthorp was in the role of Miss Cook, a teacher out to get her man. Andy, portrayed by Jack Joley, admired Diana played by Bernice Thom, as he sang Pom-Pom Girl. Jon Thompson, as Bill, joins with Pam Wolfgang, as Connie, in a romantic song, Lonesome. Jack Willman was seen as Senator Whiffwaff, the carefree type of Senator. Miss Cook attempts to charm Mr. McDuff Mr. Blum consoles Miss Ramsey after she has been thoroughly frightened by Mr. McDuff. All is sweetness and light as the entire cast assembles for the finale. Miss Cook finally gets her man, Senator Whiffwaff. Dennis Hall was caught unaware by the photographer. Argil Willman, Joyce Katt, Barb Gould, and Dennis Hall look like they enjoyed the atmosphere of the prom. Sue Carter and John Belles share a joke between the two of them. They wouldn't tell us. Andy Long adjusts Cheryl Denman's cap before commencement exercises. Marching down the aisle is a long step for Janet Peters and Kendall English. Hup, two, three, say Mr. Wilson to Sharlene Matthews and Gary Wisniewski. Quick, Jim, grab your hat and let's get out of here, Brenda Huntoon warns James Vine. Which way do we turn, right of left? About The Juniors The class of 65 kept things lively and busy this year at B .H .S. A pleasure and a great task for the Juniors was the planning of the Junior-Senior Prom and the Banquet. In addition to these happenings the Juniors sponsored such events as candy sales, mixers, and the selling of refreshments at the concession stand during football season. The class looks forward to an even more rewarding and fun-filled year as Seniors. 76 Senior class officers are from 1. to r. Secretary Sherry Clark, President Brenda Hountoon, Vice President Lewie P. Pavlik and Treasurer Glenda Yankie. The Senior Class of 1964 has evolved from a struggling group of 95 to a poised and confident group of 69. We have lost dear old friends and gained just as dear ones. All this time, however, we have kept a spirit of friendship which has made us a smooth-functioning unity. In our four years history, we who are now Seniors, have accomplished many things of which we are proud. However, there are three things we have done in which we take great pride. These are our Junior-Senior prom and Banquet, which had as the theme Blue Hawaii and our Junior play, The Nutt Family.
