VA $►? -r Breck School 123 Ottawa Avenue North Minneapolis, Minnesota 55422 ; Breck 101 Mr. Hynes at work. 'and I say. it's alright. A camera brings out the best in everyone. Breck s 101st year has been one of dramatic change. From the headmaster to student politics to the appearance of the building itself. Breck has begun a refocusing that will take more than a year to complete. With a Curriculum Committee, food surveys, more teaching seminars, new administration, and a more accessible and interested headmaster, Breck has begun to look at itself more closely and more objectively. The year has not been without tumult. Schedules and policies are yet to be firmly established, and there is a changing, uncertain air about the place which is indicative of change. But there is a general feeling of optimism that conditions will improve. The communication barrier between faculty and students and administration is slowly being broken down, and the school seems to be opening up to new and constructive opinions. On the whole, the year has been a messy yet successful one. A garden only tilled and watered, if you will. The seeds are just being planted, and there is still a long way to go before they will grow and flower. Yet the foundation, the idea, has been laid. John Iserman Mr. iserman is described by a former student as. a very effective teacher — can t believe he got me to understand Alge bra! He has clarified the mysteries of mathematics to countless confused stu dents. An example of his dedication is the half hour drive — each way — he makes from Owatonna to school every day. during which he listens to various heavy metal bands to pass the time. In addition to his work as a math teacher. MR. Iserman puts in long hours in the guidance office, and has been at Breck since 1977. A thorough and patient teacher and co-worker. Neil DeBruin Mr. Sam Salas 168 Staff Mr Salas has shown a great amount of concern for students; trot only their welfare, but also their thoughts and opinions of the school. Mr. Salas and Ms. Tabar schmooz over (he day's news. The position of headmaster was finally filled this year by Mr. Sam Salas. He has been a welcome addition to the Breck family. He has provided the school with a stable sense of purpose and direction, and his strong leadership has given students and faculty a sense of security and hope for the future. Mr. Salas’s strongest attribute is his approach-ability. He is often seen walking the halls and speaking with students about various issues that concern them and their peers. He seems quite willing to fit students who wish to talk with him into his busy schedule, and he is seen at virtually all Breck sports events and extracurriculars. Although he feels aca demies are the foundation of a school, he seems more concerned with the students' views and extra currieulars than with the academic life at the school. Because Breck is already known as a school that stresses academics heavily, he leaves the spe cifics of this part of Breck life to the administration. On the whole. Skrowactewski 176 Homecoming The week before the 198788 Homecoming coronation was made to stir up some school spirit. This week consisted of days in which everyone dressed in bizarre outfits. i.e. on Monday, everyone dressed in pajamas and bathrobe. Tuesday, people wore their clothing backwards and inside-out. On Wednesday, some came as Madonna. Tammy Bakker. and other eminant individuals. That Thursday, was the hat and sunglasses day. and Friday was the traditional blue and gold day. The Homecoming coronation was a success. The candidates for the crown were: Amy Knox. Libby Fike, Andy Lesh. Ashley Larson, and Stef Williams for the women, and Bruce McCoy. Shawn McAllister. David Aafedt. Nick Skroaczewski. and Woody Rash for the men. Amy Knox was crowned the Homecoming Queen and Bruce McCoy the King. After coronation came the Pep Fest. This got people hyped up and hoarse for the sports, whict followed. The tennis team started out. then volleyball, swimming. and diving. Then followed cross country and the football game against Brady. The whole day was entirely exhausting yet a great deal of fun. The athletes arrived at Breck early that morning and were excited for the day's events to begin. After an early breakfast, served by the freshmen, opening ceremonies took place in the chapel. Once the torch was lit and the athletes said the Special Olympic pledge, the games began. Throughout the day. the Special Olympians participated in many activities. The games themselves were exciting, but in addition, the athletes attended magic shows and sports movies, went on hay rides, played Bingo and other games, and learned songs at a singa long. Although they enjoyed the activities a great deal, by the time closing ceremonies started, many of the athletes and volunteers were ready for well deserved rest. The day was quite successful. Parent and student all helped to make the games and activities run smoothly, and all helped to make the games a wonderful experience for the athletes. Olymputns and Breck students enjoy the hayrtde. It is difficult to summarize the whole event because there were few group activities: yet. this lack of structure probably made It the success that it was. Beautiful Autumn colors provided the perfect back drop for our afternoon. People played soccer, football, fris-bee. volleyball, and Just socialized on the water front. The skits were also amusing; they ranged from people jumping around In sleeping bags to Chip Griffith's balancing a wheelchair to Rachel Solotaroffs unforgettable portrayal of MADAME. Class Issues, such as the concern that our class has continually been punished for our predecessor's behavior, were addressed. A compromise between students and administrators on the rules of our senior lounge was finally reached We have been one of the first senior classes in a long time that has not abused the privilege of our lounge. Through this experience, the class of 83 Itas learned that things can be accomplished diplomatically, unlike the class of 87. When asked what the favorite part of the weekend was. most seniors agreed the campfire. Mr. York and Mr Severn practically had to force people to leave the fire, because we enjoyed singing to the guitars, sharing philos ophies of existence. and just being together so much. One senior said that his favorite part of the weekend was going home which proves that you can t please everyone. Most of us. however, think that It was the start to a great year for a great class, as Breck will agree, the cool class of 88.
