John Severn John Severn is one of the most popular people at Breck. Students admire his ability to discipline with understanding, and faculty admire his excellence as an administrator. The words kind, caring, warm, and fun all describe the nature of his reputation. John Severn is so much a favorite with students that it is hard to imagine the Upper School without him. Mr. Severn was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He went on to take his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, and his M.A. from Florida State University. There, he also received his Ph.D. in British Diplomatic History. He is a specialist on the Duke of Wellington s brother, and has published a book on this subject. Mr. Severn came to Breck in 1934 after having lived in Florida for fourteen years. He was the head of the Upper School at a private day school there, as well as a teacher of many history classes. At Breck, Mr. Severn teaches Modern European History and Humanities, as well as being the Dean of Students. Mr. Severn has two children who attend Breck. In his spare time, he looks after them, and reads. Mr. Severn has an impressive reputation for his excellence in tennis as well. He has coached both the men's and the women's teams at Breck. Although the Dean of Students is an intimidating title, Mr. Severn's warmth makes the fear of even the most timid student disappear. He is so diplomatic and calm in all situations that an aura of peace exists wherever Mr. Severn is. Breck is an extremely fortunate to have Mr. Severn, and we all hope that he will remain here for years to come. Above: Mr. Severn means business Far Left: surveying the students with a watchful eye Left: stop taking pictures!” 7

Dedication Mr. Severn is ... a terrific friend and incredibly supportive. -Ms. Fruen a perceptive and effective enforcer, and an extremely caring, tender, and insightful administrator. -Helena Kriel an authority figure, but still a friend who will always help with your problems. He really cares. -Jolie Brenhofer almost like family to me. He has the Prussian qualities of a father, vet is enough like my brother that it would seem completely natural to dress up like The Boy Wonder and go trick-or-treating with him. -Brennen Brunner a first-rate manager of the dual, and sometimes conflicting responsibilities of administrator and teacher. My understanding is that he has thereby earned the complete and enthusiastic respect of both colleagues and students. -Mr. Rosenfield The office of infamy
