A spirit is emerging that has never existed before. Our second century is beginning with a year of transitions. 1936-1937 marks the debut of The Fine Arts Specialty, Father Bob, and the leadership of Kathryn Harper. These are important changes, and they make Breck a more exciting place to be. These new people and ideas are building a base that will last for years to come. One of the cornerstones of this base is the newly created Fine Arts Specialty. This program allows more flexibility in the schedules of students who are interested in the Arts. Although only twenty students were selected for The Fine Arts Specialty this year, teachers in the Art Department hope that the program will expand greatly in the future. This new concept at Breck presents a wonderful opportunity not only for art oriented students, but also for the school as a whole. Another important transition for the school is the spiritual leadership of Father Bob, who returns to Breck after fifteen years away. Father Bob has made a lot of changes in chapel format already. One of his new ideas is the introduction of a prayer list for student use. He is a dynamic man who has introduced a new attitude in Breck's chapel programs. The transitions that are occuring this year are adding variety and interest to the curriculum, but they are also changing the face of Breck. The new people and programs of 1986-1937 may become the base for tradition for the next one hundred years. He really cares. -Jolie Brenhofer almost like family to me. He has the Prussian qualities of a father, vet is enough like my brother that it would seem completely natural to dress up like The Boy Wonder and go trick-or-treating with him. -Brennen Brunner a first-rate manager of the dual, and sometimes conflicting responsibilities of administrator and teacher. My understanding is that he has thereby earned the complete and enthusiastic respect of both colleagues and students. -Mr. Rosenfield The office of infamy John Severn John Severn is one of the most popular people at Breck. Students admire his ability to discipline with understanding, and faculty admire his excellence as an administrator. The words kind, caring, warm, and fun all describe the nature of his reputation. John Severn is so much a favorite with students that it is hard to imagine the Upper School without him. Mr. Severn was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He went on to take his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, and his M.A. from Florida State University. There, he also received his Ph.D. in British Diplomatic History. He is a specialist on the Duke of Wellington s brother, and has published a book on this subject. Mr. Severn came to Breck in 1934 after having lived in Florida for fourteen years. He was the head of the Upper School at a private day school there, as well as a teacher of many history classes. At Breck, Mr. Severn teaches Modern European History and Humanities, as well as being the Dean of Students. Mr. Severn has two children who attend Breck. In his spare time, he looks after them, and reads. Mr. Severn has an impressive reputation for his excellence in tennis as well. He has coached both the men's and the women's teams at Breck. Although the Dean of Students is an intimidating title, Mr. Severn's warmth makes the fear of even the most timid student disappear. He is so diplomatic and calm in all situations that an aura of peace exists wherever Mr. Severn is. Breck is an extremely fortunate to have Mr. Severn, and we all hope that he will remain here for years to come. This year the administration tried a new idea for Senior Weekend. The seniors went to Camp Warren in northern Minnesota and stayed for three days and two nights. When they arrived, the seniors worked for an hour on service projects for the camp. The projects included clearing trails and shoveling sand. This allowed the students to give something back to the camp which hosted the festivities for the weekend. Then, the real fun began! Instead of many structured activities, there was a great deal of free time. Aside from the service projects, there were no required activities. The seniors spent their free time in a variety of ways. Water fights between canoes we're all takin' a bath were especially popular. Despite reprimands, the canoe fights continued for most of the weekend. Sports were also popular, most notably the football game which pitted the football players against the soccer players. On the first night the seniors had a talent show, which featured such acts as Mike Mattison, Erik Stolhanske, and Tom Thorpe's impromptu blues number and Mike Cavanaugh's memorable JJT. The second night was marked by a square dance in which most of the seniors participated. The square dance was the highlight of the weekend for many. Senior weekend was a positive experience that encouraged class unity. 10 Activities Mike Mattison tells us all the legend of long-headed Chuck The Camp Warren Hacksaw Massacre Football vs. Soccer: competition at its peak The Boys Swing your partner round and round ... Below: Lansing Shepard and Doral Pryor plot the crime of the century. A spokesperson for the Illusion Theater introduces the performance. Fall Events This fall was marked by its share of special events. Breck students were treated to a performance by the Illusion Theater Croup and an extravagant ball comemorating the Breck Centennial. The Illusion Theater has performed at Breck before. This year they did a presentation entitled No Easy Answers which dealt with sexual issues concerning teenagers. This presentation was both educational and at times entertaining. The experience proved rewarding. The Centennial Ball took years to plan, and it showed. The ball took place at the Pils-bury Center in Minneapolis. The band provided excellent dance music, and many students, faculty members, and parents filled the dance floor. The climax of the evening was a grand march featuring Breck's one-hundredth graduating class. The march was well-planned, giving a maximum effect. More dancing followed the grand march, topping off the evening. The first of these days was Clash Day, when students wore a vast array of vibrant, obnoxious clothing, including striped pants and flowered shirts. Then came Hat and Sunglasses Day, which was followed by Class Day, when each class chose its own theme. The seniors chose to emulate Mr. Severn, while the juniors all wore shorts. Class day was followed by the spirit of Blue and Gold Day. This spirit mounted as coronation drew near. Mark Evenstad and Whitney Stoddard, Mark Salsbury and Tasha Sween, Ashanti Payne and Bevin Barber, John Kelly and Mary Morrison, and Erik Stolhanske and Heather Heefner happily strolled down the aisle. Erik Stolhanske and Bevin Barber were crowned king and queen. The intensity of Home- coming strengthened when the Pep Fest began. This featured skits performed by the various athletic teams, a cake-eating contest, and the traditional tug-of-war which ended prematurely in chaos. The Pep Fest was lead by the Breck cheerleaders, Darren Welter, Mike Mattison, and Matt Aydelott. Following the Pep Fest, students attended the various Homecoming games, where Breck teams performed excellently. The football game was played under the lights and had the traditional parade of floats made by students. Homecoming ended with a festive toga dance which was one of the best in years. Students dressed in white sheets, sandals, and crowns made from the vines which adorn the building. Everyone enjoyed the dance, ending Homecoming on a positive, enthusiastic note. Activities 15 M. There is more classroom discussion here. It is really good that the students are free to express themselves. In our classes the teachers usually talk too much. I am going to change my teaching methods when I go back to China. Breck's teachers really enjoy their teaching. They don't mind spending the time to help the students with their lessons. am deeply touched by their patient spirit. I am going to give my students more help instead of criticism. Here everybody works so hard. Everyone is in a hurry. I am always behind and the slowest one here. It seems that this bad habit will only be cured when I am back in China. -Zhou Li Jun I came here as an exchange teacher from Xi'an Middle School, a sister school to Breck, and have brought with me warm greetings from all the students and staff members of our school. I have made innumerable friends here, each of whom who has offered me as much help as the last, if not more. What has remained to impress me most is the variety of facilities and activities which young people enjoy here in the United States. As a superpower on the globe, this country is quite capable and should provide its younger generation with such variety. Students can study in well-equipped libraries and labs. And schools have plenty of rooms and enough well educated teachers so that each teacher only has to teach less than 30 or even 20 students per class. That's why American teachers prefer a more flexible and effective teaching method. The students have more opportunities to speak in class and even to discuss with the teachers. The teacher can give more help and attention to each student. In China, 50 to 60 students have to squeeze into one classroom, listening to the teachers lecture most of the time. However, I feel sorry for some of the students here. They fail to make use of the facilities, instead preferring to attend parties. They have boyfriends or girlfriends too early, so some of them get into trouble. Being j friend from afar, I sincerely hope that they spend as much time as possible on their studies, so they won't regret the hours wasted now. Hopefully they will live up to the expectations of their parents and the country who have provided them with such a variety of equipment, activities, and opportunity. -Li Xin Activities 19 20 Activities Activities 21 Judge Hathorne questions the children of Salem Drama The Crucible Rev. Activities 23 Transitions: Breck has started a program this year which is the first of its kind in Minnesota. The Visual and Performing Arts Specialty, also known as The Fine Arts Track, provides students with opportunities that could otherwise only be enjoyed at a fine arts academy. Students enter the program in their sophomore year and continue until they are seniors, taking a variety of classes in music, art, dance, and drama. Acceptence into the program is based on portfolios or auditions, and a personal interview. After a student is accepted into the Specialty, a personalized schedule is designed to fit individual needs. A variety of new classes were created this year to complement the already existing fine arts classes which are a necessary part of a Specialty student's schedule. Some new classes this year are: 20th Century Cultures, Aesthetics, Music Theory, History of Drama and Theater, and Dance and the musical Comedy Stage. Although many of the people in these classes are Specialty students, almost all of the offerings are open to all students. The unusual classes are successful because of the excellent faculty who teach them. Mr. Hardy and Ms. Franke in the Art Department, Mr. Watson and Ms. Laureano in music, Mr. Hegg in drama, and Ms. Picard in dance all bring unique style to their art form. Most of the students participating in the program have a positive feeling about their first year in the Specialty, although many agree that there doesn't seem to be enough time to take all the classes they would like. One student remarks that although she is taking art philosophy and theory classes, she doesn't have the time to paint. This problem is one that the Art Department will attempt to solve as it continues to improve the curriculum. Although the program is called The Fine Arts Specialty, it is hoped that students who participate will take advantage of the program to enhance other academic subjects, rather than detract from them. A primary facet of the program's philosophy is that the arts are interrelated and a crucial element of everyday living. The Visual and Performing Arts Specialty is an important and successful transition at Breck. All of the students who were here when Father Bob was chaplain in the late 60's are now gone, and many current Breck students don't know much about him. His return to us is an important transition at Breck in 1987, and he speaks here about himself and his commitment to his profession. Q. How has Breck changed since you were here fifteen years ago? A. When I first came back, I thought it was a totally different Breck. But now that I've been here for six, seven months, it feels a lot like the old Breck. What I realize ... that you see the size of Breck, an Upper School of almost five hundred students, and you wonder, how am I ever going to know each of these people? How are we going to get that family closeness that the old Breck used to have? But then you realize that there are so many opportunities to see students on a one-to-one basis, it's not hard at all. At this point, it feels like the old Breck did. Q. What is your highest priority as a chaplain? A. As a chaplain, it's to be available. There are so many challenges ... questions ... problems you can run into in just the four years that people are here. It's to be available, because there is no one problem. Part of being a chaplain is to be a good friend. I want people to know that what is said here is confidential, and that they can get some degree of direction. Q. What do you think is the primary function of chapels? A. The most important function of a chapel is to provide a positive experience of Cod. If someone goes to chapel and the whole thing is reduced to feeling resentful, feeling that some kind of religious program is being put at them, you're going to end up with a negative experience in chapel. You may keep that for your entire life. I want people to have a positive experience so they are willing to pursue it in the future. It's as basic as meditation, it can be as simple as prayer. Q. If you could tell everyone at Breck one thing, what would it be? A. If there was any message I wanted to convey, it would be that Religion is fun, that spirituality is very rewarding. I would want chapels to be a place that students enjoy. Religion is not sober seriousness. Religion is life itself. 154 Father Bob 155 STAFF Staff 157 A dministra tion Inlerim Head, Kathryn C. Steen Staff 165 Transitions k Ms. Kathryn Harper has played an essential part in the transitions that have occured at Breck this year. Under her leadership, the new Fine Arts Specialty, Chaplain Installation, and search for a new headmaster have all gone smoothly. Although Ms. Harper is the Interim Headmaster this year and has been the Assistant Headmaster for many years, students do not seem to know much about her. Here, Ms. Harper talks about herself and her educational philosophy. Q. What do you like to do in your free time? A. ,I'm a reader, and so I like to read, but 1 would say that I spend most of my time, all that I can, going to the theater. I think the Twin Cities really provide a lot of small, nice theaters. I see more plays than movies. So I spend most of my weekends reading, going to the theater, and I like to shop. Q. Who are your favorite authors and or books? A. I like the American writers, because I probably know more about them. I like Melville. I know some people find Melville dry ... and I like Fitzgerald. I read quite a bit of non-fiction, reading about education and philosophy. I also like poetry. I especially like The Prophet. I usually have a copy wherever I am. I like it because I think it's poetry but also philosophy. A. If you could have any three wishes, what would they be? A. I would like the assurance that my children would be safe. That would be my first wish. I guess my second wish would be that I always maintain integrity and make a little difference-but that I could always keep a certain perspective that I don't make all the difference. The third wish is that I get a Bush Fellowship. Those would be my three wishes. Q. If you could tell the whole student body one thing that it would really internalize, what would it be? A. Ask questions. I would like students to believe that throughout their lives they really need to ask questions. Q. What do you think is your greatest strength as an administrator? A. I think just the fact that I like people. You need to be interested, and care about people. I think I really do care, and I am interested in people. Along with that is a desire to continue learning. I don't think that anyone is ever all that he she could be. You need to be a life-long learner. I think that's my greatest strength. Q. Your greatest weakness? A. I have an unwillingness to put a lot in writing. That can be a weakness. Along with that, I don't think I'm as comfortable making public speeches ... that's an area I need to work on. I'm not as nervous as I used to be, but still anxious. Q. You have made a lot of changes this year, including rescheduling Chapel and making Senior Speeches optional. Are you pleased with these changes? A. Yes, I'm pleased. But I'm also trying to get teachers to start asking questions about what they do and why, and what they could accomplish by doing it another way. Look at everything and come up with some key questions. loS 0 ’2 Kathryn Harper 169 170 Groups GROUPS Group 171 Performances Choruses The combined Alleluia Chorus Middle School Top: E. Baker, A.
