Weekend The second game cased for one person from each team to be blindfolded while their teammates tried to direct them solely by coded voice instruction to an orange pylon. The event was marked by hilarious scenes including Kim Jesse charging open-armed into a pine tree and Reverend Hanson flopping on the wet grass The next event was cased Bird of Paradise and involved strategic whistling. Exhilarated trains of blindfolded seniors led only by the sound of a lone whistler stumbled from one end of the footbai field to the bonfire pit. The main object, however. seemed to be avoiding a group bath in the lake. At the end of the activities the seniors stl retained more than enough energy for group discussions. In a rare occurrence, students talked honestly about the attributes of a good friend, the pressures of being a Breck senior. and the goals of the class. The campfire provided a good combination of highly charged competition and relaxing conversation as students sang together for hours, some even dance or acting. A series of activities highlighted the rest of the weekend. Games of volleyball, touch football, and swimming were constantly in progress. Yet, there was still time in the busy schedule to allow several tug-of-war matches, including an electrifying match between Steve Johnson and Katherine Bugby. At the end of the weekend the tired seniors piled gratefuly into the buses. This weekend gave the seniors a chance to initiate new friendships and to strengthen old ones. This chance to be together in a casual way led to an unmatcha-ble sense of class identity and a heightened esprit de corps. Senior Weekend 15

Mrs Gwtodys Goddard has been a grade teacher at Breck School since This year, she is leaving Breck after sixteen years of dedicated service. Mrs. Goddard combines a love of teaching with a grandmotherly approach. The shy. insecure child entering first grade is placed in her class. She knows exactly how to put the young children at ease and. at the same time, is able to make certain that they learn The first grade is said to be the most important year n a child's development. It is n this grade that the chidren either learn to read or get set in poor academic habits Mrs Goddard is not only concerned with keeping her class amused, but she also wonts them to learn Michael Wfcon. head of the Lower School, said “underneath that ’cookies and m ' grondmotheriy approach. she is a very tough teacher with very high standards Learning is made fun in Mrs. Goddard's class in a voriety of ways. Her puppet shows, staged every year, are famous throughout the Lower School, as is her Halloween costume. At one time, she and Mrs. Jean Eastman, a former first grade teacher, sewed up uniforms for themselves in order to relate better to the small chidren For the last three years, the Lower School has relied on Mrs. Goddard to keep ohve the old standards and traditions of Breck. The administration felt that as more new students and teachers have entered Breck. the more Breck hos changed They wanted the new people to understand and odapt to Breck, rather than the other way around. Mrs Goddard has hod a talk every year with the first and second grade chidren and teachers In order to help them understand “what Breck reoly is. Mrs. Goddord is leaving behind a space at Breck School that wi not be easily filled The school wi miss her style of teaching, her wonderful setf-deprecatmg sense of humor, and her love for her students In the words of Kathleen Harshbarger. a third grade teacher at Breck. “We ore not only losing on excellent teacher- we are losing a friend.
