DEDICATION Michael J. Uram is leaving Breck after giving the school forty-four years of dedicated service. In those forty-four years, he has taught at three separate campuses and worked under five different headmasters. His influence on the school has been felt in many different areas, both as teacher and administrator. Mr. Uram began at Breck in the fall of 1938 as a Latin and Spanish teacher after graduating from the University of Minnesota. His former students remember him as fair but stern. According to many people. Mr. Uram made his students memorize a lot of grammar. Fred Glasoe. a former Latin student, said that when he entered college, all students had to pass an English proficiency test in order to be able to graduate. It could be taken at any time during the student’s college years. Mr. Glasoe took it as a freshman and passed it on his first try. He attributes this to Mr. Uram. I learned more English grammar in his class than anywhere else. Stern he might have been, but Mr. Uram did introduce a relaxed air into his classroom. Another former student. Wallace Neal. said. I remember he had this crazy knife on the end of a watch chain, and as he walked back and forth in front of the class, he’d be fiddling with it and twirling this thing around and around. Several students remembered Mr. Uram joking in class and said he had a good sense of humor and an exuberant teaching style. He was so exuberant, in fact, that he once pushed a student through a paneled door in a burst of enthusiasm. Mr. Uram’s responsibilities expanded quickly. As Spanish teacher, he took the students to Mexico every summer. These trips are still remembered as good crazy fun times. Later Mr. Uram went on to drive a MR. MICHAEL URAM bus. coach freshman football, teach a class on how to build model airplanes, and coach hockey. In a less official capacity, he also periodically checked the boiler room for kids with cigarettes and the nearby drugstore for students playing hooky. Most recently. Mr. Uram was the driver's education instructor and Director of Transportation. Keeping track of myriad busses and vans, this white-haired man stood outdoors in all seasons, rain and snow and wind, day and night. He personally planned all the bus routes and supervised them for eight years while the school doubled in size. Mr. Uram has done more for Breck School than can be summarized here. He will be missed next year from his customary position near arriving and departing busses. He truly was. in Mr. Glasoe's words, cne of the highlights of Breck.” 2
