Uram is leaving Breck after giving the school forty-four years of dedicated service. In those forty-four years, he has taught at three separate campuses and worked under five different headmasters. His influence on the school has been felt in many different areas, both as teacher and administrator. Mr. Uram began at Breck in the fall of 1938 as a Latin and Spanish teacher after graduating from the University of Minnesota. His former students remember him as fair but stern. According to many people. Mr. Uram made his students memorize a lot of grammar. Fred Glasoe. a former Latin student, said that when he entered college, all students had to pass an English proficiency test in order to be able to graduate. It could be taken at any time during the student’s college years. Mr. Glasoe took it as a freshman and passed it on his first try. He attributes this to Mr. Uram. I learned more English grammar in his class than anywhere else. Stern he might have been, but Mr. Uram did introduce a relaxed air into his classroom. Another former student. Wallace Neal. said. I remember he had this crazy knife on the end of a watch chain, and as he walked back and forth in front of the class, he’d be fiddling with it and twirling this thing around and around. Several students remembered Mr. Uram joking in class and said he had a good sense of humor and an exuberant teaching style. He was so exuberant, in fact, that he once pushed a student through a paneled door in a burst of enthusiasm. Mr. Uram’s responsibilities expanded quickly. As Spanish teacher, he took the students to Mexico every summer. These trips are still remembered as good crazy fun times. Later Mr. Uram went on to drive a MR. MICHAEL URAM bus. coach freshman football, teach a class on how to build model airplanes, and coach hockey. In a less official capacity, he also periodically checked the boiler room for kids with cigarettes and the nearby drugstore for students playing hooky. Most recently. Mr. Uram was the driver's education instructor and Director of Transportation. Keeping track of myriad busses and vans, this white-haired man stood outdoors in all seasons, rain and snow and wind, day and night. He personally planned all the bus routes and supervised them for eight years while the school doubled in size. Mr. Uram has done more for Breck School than can be summarized here. He will be missed next year from his customary position near arriving and departing busses. He truly was. in Mr. Glasoe's words, cne of the highlights of Breck.” 2 WELCOME BACK MY FRIENDS ... Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and girls! Step right up to the greatest show on earth; welcome to Breck School! Observe the abundance of festivities in our school. Immerse yourself in Homecoming. Sno-Daze. the carnival, and even the passing of testsl Here, such activities call for an outpouring of spirit and celebration. Come along as this energy turns into suspense. Finals week, pumpkin hunts, and the ever important question: What’s for lunch?” confront students, and their emotions run highl To the left, is the first ring-the Lower School. The students here resemble small acrobats, bursting with energy as they participate in gym. collect things for their display cases, and frolic about the playground during recess. Share in one of the many highlights for Lower Schoolcrs-Halloween. Watch as the first ring becomes full of frenzied activity, with students rushing between the pumpkin hunt and their annual costume parade. This holiday also illustrates the creative side of the ring. Join in the fabrication of paper mache pumpkins, construction paper witches, and tissue paper ghosts. Lower School is easily distinguished from the other two rings by its activities. What other act consists of a weekly swish and spit day. original puppet plays, and special homework days? Enthusiasm reigns throughout all. for these young acrobats claim they love Lower School, the teachers, and the other students! Lower Schoolers play with parachutes 3 Alex Krelder caught by surprise. Look this wayl Here is the second ring-Middle School. It is populated by mysterious harlequins acting out their own version of the show. Here, in the second ring, young performers adjust to the increased pressure and become accustomed to more freedom and responsibitlity. This ring's enigmatic air may seem confusing, but if Middle School is observed closely, similarities to other rings become apparent. The homework that is constantly complained about, but seems to get done magically, the friends that stand whispering in the halls, and the enchanting enthusiasm for sports are all echoes of the other rings. These mischievous harlequins combine all this with their own spirit and create a totally separate world. Many of the actors wear similar costumes, but on special, much-loved days, the ring comes alive with vibrant cowboys and girls, teeny-boppers and greasers. and ghosts and goblins. Come, see this ring, and wonder at its curiosities. Its spirit will not fail to amaze. TO THE SHOW ... Army fatigue . Mr. Phillip ?! Moving right along, we come to the third ring-the Upper School. Here, we enter another facet of circus life. These performers are all jugglers. With heavy loads, they balance both fun and work, usually without dropping anything. It is a skillful task, for here we have year-round motion. There are pep-fests. where the blue and gold spirit, epitomized by the cheerleaders, pervades all. Then come sports events, and teams sweeping on to victories! The next act contains students dancing to such bands as Cats Under the Stars” and Sweet Taste of Africa.” To balance all this action, everyone supports each other to keep the ring from toppling. The Upper School performers are dedicated artists-, they work hard to achieve their goals in their work. The jugglers manage notes, tests, and papers. They sit through hours of lectures and still can turn to their teachers as friends. It is a beautiful ring, in this respect, for encouragement abounds, and students join to applaud themselves in the end. A Halloween costume can't inhibit concentration. THAT NEVER ENDS ... 5 t UNDER THE BIG TOP As you enter the circus, don’t miss the new feature attraction. We are pleased to announce that, after over a year of construction, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit has finally been completed! Although the chapel is basically a place for quiet and meditation, still present is the thrill of the Big Top. Guest speakers, singing, senior speeches, and applause fill it with energy, excitement, warmth, and friendship. With enthusiasm. Rev. Andy McCarthy presides over the services. To him. the chapel is a place to celebrate all of life and share through music, silence, and readings. He hopes that, in these ways, the chapel will always remain alive. Eagerly awaited by all. this trip was taken in the early fall. All classes were taken to the pumpkin patch where the fun began. The kids piled out of the buses, their exuberence held in check by teachers. The troupe swarmed over the pumpkins. By poking, slapping, and squishing them, they checked for rotting fruit, squealing with delight if they found one. Not one pumpkin got by their eagle eyes, or their strong little hands. Slowly but surely, each child picked out a pumpkin of his or her own. Finally, each child was clutching a pumpkin. They reboarded the bus. chattering excitedly to one another, cradling the pumpkins in their arms, eyes shining. The trip was over, but it lived on as a joyful memory. 2i • 22 Andrew Whitley Vale Schonebaum Katherine Joshua Simer Wahlquist Robert Smith Steven Walker Beatrice Sue Ward Springborn Amanda Weber Kathryn Swadburg Where was that book? A 3RD GRADE VIEW Third grade was really a lot of fun. according to Alex Hannah. Many things which might seem dumb and boring to an older student were things which made up the best part of a third grader's day. Gym class, a thing most students studiously try to avoid, was looked forward to by the third grade. Their small bodies hurled around the gym in an excess of energy, with all the fierce concentration of eight and nine year olds. Language Arts was one of Alex’s personal favorites. He liked the class, which was challenging and fun, and he also liked the teacher. Miss Page. Lunch was a welcome break in the day for busy third graders. Alex explained that with all the different things they did during the day. they really needed to relax.” These third graders were an integral part of the Lower School, bringing to it an air of energetic warmth. They truly are one of the brightest spots of the entire school. 25 Tiffany Hauler receives an A''. HO ANTS ALLOWED Nearly everyone at Breck knows the feeling of entering a new school and not knowing anybody. Most people at Breck are also familiar with how hard it is to make friends, especially in a school which requires extended hours of study and has a widespread community. In the Lower School, new students are united with old students in an exciting way-at the beginning of the year they go on a picnic. The Lower School students set off to a state-owned park after school. There aren’t any pre-organized games, so the kids organize their own activities. The old students challenge the new students in such games as softball and soccer. It doesn’t really matter who wins; it’s the interaction that counts. After the picnic the kids feel more comfortable with each other. It’s a great way for the kids to get acquainted with each other and have a lot of fun in the process. Imme Kersten and Katie Jones found many things to like about the last year in Lower School, not the least of which was being the oldest. Swimming also met with their approval, and their enjoyment of the sport was heightened by the fact that they were unable to go swimming last year. Many teachers in Lower School were named as another reason fourth grade was fun. Imme and Katie also thought skating was a great part of their program as did the rest of the fourth grade. Next year, fourth graders are expecting their schedules to be easier. Middle Schoolers do the same things every days our schedule changes and we sometimes get confused.” one fourth grader commented. Plato and Pet computers were in use and overflowing with educational and recreational programs during the 1982-83 operational year. There were four Plato computers that were donated by Control Data Corporation in memory of Robert Hawkins — a senior vice president and Breck father. These computers were very valuable because of their multiple uses. Educationally, they provided a wide spectrum of programs from their giant memories, and the touch screens made these same programs more fun and interesting. Pets were more numerous, and primarily used for basic classes in BASIC and the playing of games after school. Bea Brown was an English teacher who taught in the Breck Middle School for 25 years. When she retired in 1965. an award for proficiency in English was established in her name. Jay Johnson, one of her former students, recalled what she was like. She loved poetry, especially Emily Dickinson and Rachel Fields. Owls- she loved owls. She always wondered why a bird that was supposed to be so wise said ‘who’ instead of 'whom'.” Her pet peeve was grammatical errors. If students made more than three errors per assignment. she made them rewrite the assignment. Bea Brown usually returned to present her award at the end of the school, although she has not been able to do so for the past three years. Jay Johnson said I used to hate English until I had Mrs. Brown. GOODBYE IZOD The Middle School uniform, instituted in 1982-83. consisting of a light blue shirt, navy blazer, gray slacks or skirt, and optional yellow sweater, was the subject of controversy. The main reason for the uniform was that many students felt there was too much peer pressure forcing them to buy fashionable and high-priced clothes, like Izods and Polos. Not all students, however, agreed. Eric Johnson. new seventh grader, said, I don’t feel it is fair to make a new student spend fifty-five dollars to buy a new uniform blazer.” Ken Ranee, seventh grade, was looking forward to this year without the uniform. He said he felt cheated, especially after buying new clothes for the new year. Eighth grade, in transistion between Middle School and Upper School, had a dress code similar to Upper School’s. The rest of Middle School accepted this difference in status-, most seemed indifferent. Eighth graders believed their exemption from the uniform was because they didn’t wear uniforms last year, so that it was their privilege this year. The look of the uniform was not a focus of complainti most students thought it looked good. The uniform accomplished its goal: competition was reduced and students were happier with the situation, although they still looked forward to the chance to express themselves through their clothes. — Wayne Schneider Matthew Hedberg Heather Heefner Bret Hilde Annemarie Hill John Kelly Kathleen Korbuly Jay Larson Scottt Marcus Mark Horner Tycho Kerstcn Nicole Korsh William Lewis Michael Mattison Jennifer Hubbs Jennifer Koel: Esthcr-Lyn Kravitz Katherine Lund Catherine May Christopher McGrann Iris Medini Kevin Mestrich 44 Marc Schwartz Hobo-at-large. He does things spontaneously and unexpectedly, such as jumping up on his desk to make a point, but says, I don't go into class trying to be funny. His closeness to his students probably stems from the fact that he thoroughly enjoys teaching English. though he hates to correct papers. Mr. Swanson leads a busy life. Besides teaching, he edits manuscripts for a publishing company. He spends as much time as he can enjoying his hobbies, of which he has quite a number. He skis, swims, plays the guitar and the piano, and sings. He also has a preference for fine restaurants (like French cafes and the Fuji-Ya) and dancing. (He prefers a partner in a wool skirt with her hair in a bun). One of his more interesting hobbies is mountain climbing. He does it as often as he can, and last summer he lost thirty-five pounds carrying a ninety pound backpack while leading a moun- tain climbing group. He says he climbs for the challenge and the thrill, and mountain climbing helps build his self-confidence. Before he became a teacher, Mr. Swanson considered several other careers. He has turned down a scholarship to a seminary in favor of teaching. He says I felt it was not my calling, though it would be a rewarding career in the long run.” He still thinks about going to medical school, and would enjoy a life taking home the paycheck of a doctor. This is Mr. Swanson's first full year of teaching at Breck. He was a student teacher under Mrs. Rutishauser and Mr. Anderson in the fall of I9S0. Last year he taught part time after completing some science courses at the University of Minnesota. In Middle School, Mr. Swanson's image is one of a Romeo. He says, however, that it is strictly an image. I allow it to continue because it lets the kids have fun with their imaginations.” Encouraging the imagination seems to be central to Mr. Swanson's method of teaching. 46 Mike Adams Andy Anderson Renee Anderson Douglas Anding James Bartel Nell Bartz Thomas Baxter Sara Beedon Kerwm Bell Markell Blake Cory Brandt Inga Broerman Jason Buxell Nels Carlson April Cecchi Michelle Champlin Darin Christenson Amy Copperman Carson Cox Andrea Crockett Lory Drummond Leslie Dunlap Andrew Efron Serene Evanstad Sarah Fangman Karin Fingerson Susan Fink Martha Flotten Robert Girouard James Gray Observing a moment of silence for Chaplain McCarthy. 47 Earl Hacking Anna Haley Rachel Haskin Heather Hitchcock Mathew Hoffman Susan Holden Alison Houck Darren Howclton Malt Hoffman moving into Brock. 48 Stephen Hyduke Davrashawn Johnson Evan Jones Martha Jones Katherine Kerr Carolyn Koester Alexander Kreider Scott Kreischcr Larry Lane Glen Lang Kelly Larson Jennifer Leek Sarah lesh Jeffrey Lcwin Sarah Itbertus Bruce MacKinnon Stewart MacLcnnan Robert McCrea Christopher McNamara Mark Melnychuk Lynne Moore Robert Morse Paul Nelson Robbie Nelson Scott Perry Tina Pfau Victoria Price James Reay Anthony Richie Eric Rmgdahl Simone Ri k Charles Roach Jane Rollwagen Evan Sarver Ted Saxon Kathy Shane Kari Simonson Laura Sisola Marne Slesinger Jennifer Solotaroff Necheie Spaulding Lawrence Steiner Eike Sten Barbara Stephenson Sara Stich Jennifer Stolte Lara Sutherland Kathryn Swan Kristina Tanas ichuk Bryan Tyner Philip Weir Sean Williams Holly Wmje Beth Wisely Sydney Woods Keith Ylinen David Zipkin TIES Mr. Miller and his wide and weird ties are one of the most talked about phenomena at Breck. His collection of over fifty ties includes a patriotic tie” with white stars and blue background, a circus tie with yellow elephants, an Eve tie” where Eve peeks through flowers with a deep and soulful look, and of course a traditional Breck tie . Among his favorites are the hand-painted black silk tie and the Chinese feather tie featuring a single exquisite pheasant feather. On is window display of ties in the science wing are the words Blest be the ties that bind”, a play on words referring to the hymn with the same text. This small phrase sums up Jake Miller’s philosophy on ties: he hates wearing ties, but if he has to wear a tie. it should be interesting and unique and should make a statement to society. 49 It is the night before the exam, and the furious cramming has already begun. Beads of sweat have accumulated on the wrinkled forehead of the student. As papers fly through the air, a shaky hand guides the diet pop to the pale lips. These tremoring muscles, ashen skin, glazed eyes, and drooling lips are all factors of one of America’s most dreaded diseases: Testophobia. Numerous studies and efforts have been made to find a possible cure for this illness. The conclusion of the lab reports indicated that Testophobia is incurable. The National Organization of Desperate Students (N.A.D.S.) has documented several possible steps by which a student may avoid these severe problems. These directions are to be followed carefully, for side effects from overdose have been found to be harmful and dangerous. 1) Be sure to have an ample supply of pop. high-energy junk food, a box of caffeine pills and or a pot of coffee. 2) Situate all materials in a ring around you. (This includes all food, books, telephones, older siblings etc ...) 3) Now is the time to ask the all important question — What’s the test on? 4) Then memorize everything! a. Put the facts to the notes of a favorite song, and prepare to sing your way through the test. b. Read and repeat material out loud to the point where parents wonder why they are sending you to Breck and not a mental institution. 5) Once you have done that, sharpen 3 pencils or refill 3 pens and prepare yourself for anything. Students have an undeniable craving for this confection which is chewed but not swallowed. Yet do they really know what they are asking for? The main ingredient in chewing gum is an insoluble rubber-like gum base called chicle” which is derived by boiling down latex (the milkey substance of the sapodilla tree). Some people claim that by chewing gum they occupy their jaw so they do not eat. therefore sticking to their diet”. But little do they know that one piece of gum is about ten calories and sugarless gum is about seven. Another myth about gum is that if you swallow it. it stays in your stomach for ten years before it goes through”. In reality, gum does not hurt the body if it is accidentally swallowed. That is not to say that you can swallow gum without repercussions. There is still the chance of the gum blocking parts of the digestive system and having to be surgically removed. Acting Headmaster. Kathryn Harper was the Acting Headmaster during Mr. Littleford’s sabbatical at Harvard. As the Acting Headmaster, she worked with all aspects of the Breck community, including parents, faculty, and administration, while focusing on the needs of the students. She enjoyed the position because her work often varied. A single day could have consisted of many meetings ranging from talking with parents, to figuring out where the golf would be played, to calling the Department of Health to find a method of clearing the football field of seagulls. These random responsibilities frustrated her at times because she felt no sense of continuity connecting the different appointments. But in general. Mrs. Harper found a sense of satisfaction in her work because all of her responsibilities helped the students at Breck. 89 Mr. Nickerson, on the run as usual. Upper School Director. The 1982 Breckfest was a medley of fascinating activities, delicious food, beautiful arts and crafts, and thrilling performances. The Midway was astounding with its variety of activities and its challenge. Many tried to dunk Mr. Litt-leford in the Dunk Tank. Screams of terror constantly emanated from the horrifying haunted house of the Senior class. Along with these highlights were many booths offering prizes of interest to all ages. Hunger pangs were quickly stilled simply by visiting one of the many booths dispensing delicious foods. Crowds of people munched hot dogs and slurped cokes. For those with more elegant tastes, the Parent’s Association served an international dinner. The Art Fair was displayed in the cafeteria with many beautiful hand-crafted items for sale. People browsed through time and time again, unable to resist the intriguing articles. Later, when fatigue set in. it was a relief to sit down, relax, and watch the talented singers, dancers, and musicians. At the Breckfest there was something for everyone’s taste in entertainment. CHAPEL DEDICATION The Chapel of the Holy Spirit was formally dedicated on November 3. 1983. bringing together parents. students, and alumni. It was an emotional occasion for everyone in attendance. Mrs. Harper. Acting Headmaster, and Mr. Littleford, Headmaster, were both participants in the service led by Rev. Andy McCarthy and several Episcopal bishops. A bagpipe band piped the processional, and many people said the music added something very special to the event. For students who remembered the old Chapel it was a bittersweet service, mixing the spirit of the old with the grandeur of the new. THE ADDING MACHINE 1982 was Warren Schueneman’s first year at Breck. and the play he chose — The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice — was a difficult and significant production. The show concerned the victimization of man in society, and the refusal of one man to climb out of his ever-worsening state and fight for his rights. Bill Wisely played Mr. Zeroi Rebekah Green-wald. his nagging wife and Elizabeth Meeker, his adoring co-worker Daisy Devore. The cast was small as were the audiences, but everyone agreed that the challenging play was a success. Also a success were the post-performance symposiums. The audience asked hard questions about the symbolism of the play and the cast came through with flying colors, showing how well they had come to understand the play. 125 Front Row. E. Bruhl. A. All-School Chapels held performances of Russian music, and Middle and Upper School Chapels had speakers who related personal experiences about the political situation in the U.S.S.R. Motivated by speeches by Mr. Mark Glotter. Vice-President of the Minn. Comm, for Soviet Jewry, students wrote letters encouraging Russians who have applied for exit visas. The focus of Russian Month was the art exhibit Forbidden to Export. This artistically daring show gave Breck students and parents a chance to see a courageous type of expression. CHRISTMAS CONCERT '82 A kindergarten cherub full of wonderment. The Fine Arts Department presented the annual Christmas concert on Sunday. December 12. Five choirs performed a medley of songs, stunning in their variety and polished delivery, that ranged from religious choruses to popular show tunes. The three bands, from Lower. Middle, and Upper Schools, played nearly flawlessly, reflecting all the hard work put in by the band members and by Mr. Evans. The students, too many to name, gave outstanding performances. Kindergarteners through Seniors participated to deliver a well-balanced program characterized as delightful” professional” and mature” by the large audience. The Snow Dare courti S. Evenstad. S. After lunch, the coronation was held in the Chapel. Among the hopeful as candidate for Snow Daze king was Elvis. Unfortunately. he lost. After the coronation came the piece de resistance: the talent show. Some of the more memorable acts included the Go-Gos presenting their rendition of Our Lips are Sealed”, Willie and the Zambia Flower Children, with Sean Harrison as lead singer contortionist, and David Williams' fluid dance. Snow Daze 1983 was one of the highlights of the circus, breaking the midwinter doldrums, and bringing the entire Upper School together for laughs, cheers, and a good time. 137 Eric Welter sculpts a dragon. There was something for everyone in the amalgamation of artistic, interesting, and responsible groups that sprang up around the school. For those interested in the arts, the Thespian Society offered a chance to explore the theater from many different points of view. Along with the bands and choirs for all grades were other musical programs, such as the flourishing Suzuki program and the jazz band. Dance classes offered another way to express creative energy. In 1982-83. the class performed original dances that were well received. Literary artists ran the Bugle, put out the Breck Upper School talent publication, the Logos, and published the Mustang. Various special interest groups also engaged in other activities: The International Club organized sales and the Breckfest to bring foreign students to Breck. and the Science Club — maturing every year — discussed present and past intellectual issues. For those obsessed with saving the galaxy there was the Games Clubi for those interested in the spiritual life, there was the Chapel Committee. And then there were the procrastinators_but they rarely met. The different groups combined to present a bustling atmosphere in which students could perform to the best of their abilities. MUSTANG! Or imprint indelibly somewhere all the awful, yet humorous comments we threw at teach other. But I guess the real record of the year is. of course, our yearbook. And it really was a circus, wasn't it? But hopefully, it was as worth it for all of you as it was for me. I'd like to take this chance to apologize for my bad moments and to thank you for the support and dedication that allowed me to escape with most of my sanity.
