For instance, it is known that Pre-schoolers would often plan out mini empires using wooden miniatures to create their masterpiece. Other times they would be found putting together cardboard pieces of different shapes until the pieces formed a picture — the pieces were called jig-saw. The Pre-schoolers were also known for creating art by smearing colors across pieces of paper and putting their names on it. All this and more would make up Pre-schoolers' life in the 1981-82 erea. It seems that no one ever touched this shrine for fear of destroying its great beauty and innocence. It was located rigt outside the front of the school near the Middle School section of the dig. At its previous location, however, near the Mississippi River, it was supposedly used by the Lower Schoolers, because they were the only ones who would dare to tread upon the sacred sand. Once they had this, they would climb up the sliver pole symbolizing their climb up to Heaven after death. In this shrine, made out of the now extinct substance called wood, is a bridge depicting the connection of the physical and mental aspects of lower Schooler's life. They would often offer their gifts to the shrine by building castles underneath it. However, in the years 1981-82. this shrine stood desolate and isolated, no one daring to disturb its great beauty. FIFTH Sn©  v Bwmot Doan Gaboon Bom Garaov Dots Harmon Jam By Pruppo Gagnon Jcrfnomon Mcfcm Kamrvn Mortiod BEING NEW As many fifth graders will tell you, being in fifth grade isn't especially fun. All these eighth graders, who are looking forward to Upper School, and tolerating the younger kids, are full of importance, and terribly aweinspiring to the fifth grade! And the seventh graders are very concious of the fact that they no longer wear uniforms, and so are no longer indenti-fied as the younger children , and the sixth graders, all eager to make up for last years teasing, are thrilled to be older than someone in the Middle School. All in all, the fifth graders end up getting pushed around a lot. In fact, it's kind of demeaning. As one fifth grader summed it up, What a bummer ! However, believe it or not, fifth grade does have some benefits. While the older kids are stuck with hours of homework, the fifth graders get away with about 45 minutes. The fifth graders are excused from chapel and other activities (Sometimes, anyway), and are kind of looked after by the others (Again, sometimes, anyway.) Fifth grade really isn't that bad. Think of all the things the fifth grade does over the fourth grade. Camp St. Croix, for example. So, to next year's fifth grade, rest assured: despite what you may have heard, it's really not that bad. However, watch out for the returning sixth grade! 34 Best friends forever or o leost until lunchtime BEING A BIDDY A highlight of every Middle Schooler's life is, of course, being a biddy. A biddy, as any Middle Schooler will tell you, gets the food for its particular table, gets more food for the table and takes back the scraped plates back to the kitchen, if the biddy is at a rather demo- cratic table, people may take turns, or they might just decide that one person has to scrape the plates. GOD OR We have unearthed writings of these ancient people that nave led to our discovering records of an incredibly old cult. This cult, known as “SCIENCE STUDENTS , centered its worship around a strange god attributed with supernatural powers. The rituals involved in this worship were strange, unnatural experiments involving weather reports, placing furnaces in nonex-istant towns, making boats of clay, boxes of paper, strange structures of toothpicks, and, of course, the infamous egg drop ! Also, it seems to be this goo which incited the people to MAN? overthrow Western Civilization as it was known. However, one of our more learned scientists claims to have uncovered startling new evidence that this strange god did, in fact, exist! This god, known as King or more formally as “Misterprousesir may nave been a wise teacher who lived during the dark ages of the 1970's and 1980's in the domain the ancient writings call Breck . If this is true, modern history will be revolutionized. All history books will have to be rewritten to include this ancient wise man, and his strange following. 38 Valero Rnco Kenneth Rone Coriw Reece KomvMey Alexo Storyy JonoWwn Svoon T x Triroot JAcroet Towntey XKY« Tunor StOVOft Wctoor Can't anyone chorvge Mr Jackson back nto a man? Middle Schoolers participated in some after school sports. However, many people were not aware of this fact. The most common sport in the Middle School was soccer. Is there even existence outside Middle School? Yes, there is life outside of school, and even though all Middle Schoolers have their own speical extracurricular life, some of them have special interests. For example, a 7th grader, Whitney Stoddard, is a nationally ranked diver. An 8th grader. Kathryn Swan, rides horses. When asked to write a few things about riding, she wrote, Riding is an interesting and rewarding sport. There are shows, races, money, and all sorts of prizes to win. Horses are, well, very changeable, with all of their styles, moods, and expressions. This year's eighth graders did enjoy their year at the top of Middle School, even though they would have liked having the privilege of being let out of chapel first given to them more often. How was their life”? Middle Schoolers had their ups and downs, but Middle Schoolers did have life; that can be said about them. With a new campus, new Middle School heads, not to mention new lockers. the year was bound to be interesting. Middle Schoolers had new classes, such as typing and dance, along with a great deal of sports and extra-curricular activities. Middle Schoolers had an opportunity to be on yearbook or to be in one of the drama productions as a member of the stage crew. Each of the classes had a special event or field trip that helped make this year enjoyable, whether it was Camp St. Croix, Camp Idu- hapi, the infamous seventh and eighth grade hay ride, or Camp Warren. Middle School is sometimes viewed as a stopping point between Lower School and Upper School, but if one thinks about it. Middle School is necessary. How would eighth grade totally dominate if it weren't for Middle School? This would mean a great loss for the school community as a whole. As Middle School has no real, definite, mentality” (Mrs. Eugster), it needs its own extremes in a school where all kinds of people are found. Maybe Middle School needs an amorphous image, because this makes Middle School unique, and along with having a lot of life. Middle Schoolers are unique. No way! But it was true, folks. 48 returning Breckies and 36 welcome newcomers streamed through the sophomore hall this yfear. A lot of confusion resulted which was apparent in the queries floating back and forth during the first month. Such things as: Excuse me. what grade are you in? or What did you say your name was? could often be heard. During this initiation period, everyone seemed to feel alienated. The new. bigger school seemed to separate grades and friends, but, with the help of active student leadership, things soon settled down. From the success of the of the Isabella trip, it was easy to see the beginnings of a spirited and unified class. Pushing 100 may be tough at first, but it turned out to be more fun, too! 5S As the sophomore class worked through the year, they were con-fronted-sometimes unknowingly-with many issues. One of the first things returning students noticed was the difference between 1981 and 1982. Of course, the increased population was noticed. but there were other things. Tammy Melzer noted, ... it's more strict, and Janet Greenlees said. There are more rules. A major change of being a sophomore was the ability to drive (or at least take driver's ed). Everybody seemed very excited. They felt the power of driving would change their lives. They would have more freedom. Ian Steyaert, Bill Campbell, and Debbie Rogers all thought boy-girl relationships were pretty good at Breck while Karin Riley dissented. Everybody's too shy. Janey Moe agreed because School pressures are too much. and Jim Mandell felt that People get embarrassed and there's too much gossip. Boy-girl friendships, on the other hand, were thought to be quite good, but many wished for more than just friendship. There were only two representatives from each class since the offices of secretary and treasurer were abolished. Underclass grades also elected a third representative. Also, under Mark Hanson's and Ben Douglas' leadership, the Student Council was more politically oriented this year. Instead of simply organizing social events, they worked on the problems of student life. Two examples of this were the rewriting of the constitution and the dress code issue. There was quite a stir when this code was changed, but the council met to discuss the issue several times, and worked to establish a policy which was acceptable. Each class also had individual projects such as the sale of Happening's Books by seniors, concessions at home games by juniors, homecoming buttons by sophomores, and carnations by freshmen. All this and more contributed to the main purpose of the Student Council, which was to try to promote school spirit and Upper School unity. The man suspected of kidnapping Charles Horowitz is shown here. But wait . . THANKS, MOM! Our mom, Mrs. Ana Globa, started working at Breck in early 1969. She has seen a lot of students come and go but few people know and appreciate the work she does. She sews up holes in students' clothes or washes a pair of pants that had the day's lunch on them. How many people would do that? She washes the athletic uniforms and would often complain about the football uniforms because they are so hard to get clean. During our four years at Breck, we could really appreciate what she has done for us and the school. She is part of the maintenance staff, but does so much more. She's always fixing things, running errands, and helping people, cleaning, sewing and washing uniforms. No matter how dirty, she would always get them sparkling clean with a little tender loving care. She's always cheerful, trying (and succeeding) to make as many people happy as she can. We're glad she's finally being noticed and appreciated by students just as much as others. Mom, we love you! Victor and Peter. With much love and respect, the Class of '82 IN MEMORY OF ROBERT B. MONICK, JR. CLASS OF '82 1963-1977 At this point in our section, we'd like to remember A friend, a good buddy, a former class member. Rob Monick taught us to laugh, to enjoy what we do. So Rob, you're still with us, we're thinking of you. From “Ode to the Class of '82“ by Ed Cavin THE MANY FACETS OF VAN Down the stone wall of the universe a tear is drying Its white path is barely visible I wipe it off easily with my finger and taste salt from sands that border my mind The foot prints washed away leave me queasy and afraid Somewhere a tiny girl goes on crying because her father has left simply for the day And somewhere a father goes on walking because the stone wall has simply no end — Van Anderson Please, no1” cried Mr Anderson. Don't moke me clean the table again!” Who is that bespectacled young man with the frizzy hair? Why does he wear that black tuxedo with the alligator on the vest? What is it in this man that drives him to run. bicycle, and speed skate throughout all seasons. Where does this man come from? Who is that sensitive poet that daily endures the ineptitude of unpolished youths? Why, it's Van Anderson! Teacher, Athlete, Poet, Husband. Father, and Friend. Mr. Anderson fives in the heart of south Minneapolis with his wife and three young children. A man of rich experiences, he was born and raised in Minnesota, graduating from Minnetonka High School, and continuing his education at Northwestern University and the U of M. He served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and later studied in France. He also earned a M.A. from the U of M. Students have found him to be a perceptive, humorous, refreshingly informal and accepting person. He believes knowledge should not be passed from teacher to student, but should be discovered by the student with the guidance of one more experienced. He seems to have an extraordinary rapport with many students, encouraging them to realize their self potential. Mr. Anderson is just one of the many warm and caring teachers at Breck. % FIRE AGAIN? Breck School seems to have been plagued by fires over the past few years. In 1979, the chapel at the West River Road campus was completely gutted by fire on a late November night. The next year, a small fire broke out in the small shop of the then newly completed drama facilities. Fortunately. the damage was not extensive. Short-circuited wires had ignited rags, causing the accident. The most recent occurrence of fire happened on Dec. 10, 1981. Again, it involved the drama facilities. As the fire alarm blared, perplexed students walked out of the school around 2:00 pm. They soon spotted smoke pouring out of the top of the Cargill Theater. The po- lice and several fire trucks arrived within minutes and quickly went to work. While rumors of arson circulated. it was discovered that, again, short-circuited wires had caused the small fire in the storage rooms above the theater. The theater itself was not badly damaged, except for smoke and water on the floor. The damage was enough, however. to send some students and faculty into a mild panic. The Upper School Christmas Concert had been scheduled for that very night. Determined to hold the concert. the school had the smoke pumped out of the theater, in time for a successful, albeit smelly. Christmas concert. took a long time to adjust, but then it was easier. Almost all new students felt that the academic pressures were much greater than at their old school. They also felt the teachers cared more about their teaching and the well-being of the students. In a sense, everyone was a new student this year, but some found the Golden Valley campus too impersonal with its sprawling layout, barren walls, and uncarpeted hallways. After some months, however, the halls were carpeted, bare walls accumulated murals and art work, posters, slogans, bulletin boards, and trivia, and the new students settled in comfortably. New sophomore Andrew Wheeler. NEW STUDENTS NEW BEGINNINGS For all students, both old and new. moving to the Golden Valley campus was a new beginning. The larger campus allowed a significant increase in the student population. New sections were added in Lower School, and the sophomore class added about thirty new students, making it the largest class in the Upper School. What was it like to be a new student? Like any new experience, it caused a sense of hesitancy and shyness. Of those students surveyed. 85% said they had felt out of place during the first week of school. It was a lonely feeling to walk into strange surroundings with no or few friends. Bridget Hust freshman, said, It FOREIGN FRIENDS For the past several years. Breck has tried to have at least one foreign exchange student a year. In '81-'82. three attended Breck. each from a different country. For Peter Stell-way (Germany), and Ofelia Velasquez-Briseno (Mexico), this was their first year in America. Zhang Jin-Lei, sophomore from Shanghai. China, had been with us for a year and a half when she moved to Connecticut in December. During Jin-Lei's first year, she lived with Sarah Fike's family. Then she lived with her father, a graduate student at the U. of M. Jin-Lei enjoyed drawing, painting and music, but she was also an avid reader and fine student. Her only initial problem was that all her textbooks were in English. She soon overcame that barrier. In late 1981 her father was offered a position in the East, and Jin-Lei accompanied her father there. On her last day of school, the cooks presented her a huge going away cake, in the shape of a suitcase, large enough for all her classmates to share. Ofelia and Peter stayed through both semesters. Ofe- lia. sophomore from Mexico City, lived with Mrs. Vickman and later with Jessica Mauer's family. Ofelia enjoys music, biking, and making paper-mach6 pigs. She quickly became a part of student life, joining the tennis team and trying out for the musical. Her favorite subject was history, although she participated in all classes with zest and enthusiasm. She said she enjoys the U.S. because it's organized and clean. The people are so friendly. Peter, a junior, also liked the people here. He lived with Ker-stin and David Anderson's family. whom he had come to know when they Sved for a year in his hometown of Roth-burg, Germany. He came to Breck to improve his English and have a break from school pressures. He found, however, that the homework here was much more than he had expected. In the spring. Peter participated in the Zoo and Institute of Art Intensives. Although he like the open spaces in the U.S., he felt that people are too dependent on cars. He also felt that school occupied too much time in a teen's life. I remember the first day; I was walking in the halls and saw so many people with blue eyes! I think Americans are warmer than Chinese, and people always say. 'Hi!' to each other when they meet in the hall. That doesn't usually happen in China. The first semester, my friends had to explain every word to me when they wanted to talk to me. then I learned to get used to everything. Anyway. I liked Breck a lot, mostly because it was fun. — Zhang Jin-Lei 98 Gov. Quie defends his fiscal pokey This year over forty juniors and seniors in the all-new economics class had the opportunity to see and talk with the Governor about Minnesota issues including state fiscal policy. It was an unique and enlightening experience and the students learned much from our ubiquitous Gov. Al Quie. The probing questions included such issues as the 770 million dollar budget deficit, tax indexing, and the budget cuts the Governor was proposing. Outside demonstrated 17 hundred U. of M. students roaring, We want Quie! We want Quie!'', reacting to the budget cuts that would raise their tuition. After the students ended their interview with the governor, they talked with Rep. Ben Gustafson. Breck nurse Donna Gustafson's son. to hear the opposing side of Quie's views. All the QUIE MEETS ECONOMIC STUDENTS Dove Grubb. Joen van Oppen. and Pat Zweber bemused by Governor's explanation econ. students agreed that this was one of the most positive experiences of the whole year. Al of this was made possible by Breck's new economics teach. Mr. Allen Stern. He is developing a program funded by a special outside grant to bring new and more effective approaches to economic education into the curriculum. In addition to the traditional techniques and a college-level text, the class uses such methods as computer-based instruction, similations and games, and might even establish a real business which gives students personal knowledge of business practices. THE RUBIX CUBE Ned Brown and Shelly Biernat from 5th grade battle The Cube. One of the biggest fads in the Middle School this year had six sides, six colors, and caused an immense amount of frustration. It was. naturally, the Rubix Cube. This puzzle not only perplexed Middle Schoolers, but also some Upper and Lower Schoolers as well. Patterns on the cube like dots. flower, or checkerboard became part of the cube vogue. The cube was not the only puzzle that annoyed Breck students this year. Other forms of the cube, like pyramids, octagons, or something known as the missing link were also popular. The cube was almost impossible to solve. There were, however, a few true cubemeisters” in each grade who could manipulate the cube to show almost any pattern they wanted. The Rubix cube made life at school colorful, interesting, and. yes. irritating. 99 SNOW DAZE 1982 Snow Daze fell on a beautiful day after a week of near-zero temperatures and low morale. The halls buzzed with anticipation as Upper School students and faculty alike looked forward to Snow Daze activities and the long-a-waited FOUR DAY weekend. The juniors had already initiated Snow Daze Week by holding a button exchange contest; Madeline Williams and Jon Seed won. On Thursday. Breckies cross country skied, shaped snow sculptures, and played snow sports while beams were secured onto the chapel frame. Coronation crowned Scott Brandt as King and Liz Larsen as Queen. The remainder of the Royal Court were (11th) Brad Pfaff and Alexa McMillan. (10th) Andy Comfort and Dina Wolkoff, (9th) Bob Bertino and Kate Poley. Leah Dvorak and Adam Wolkoff were the masters of ceremony. After lunch, during which carnations were distributed, a rousing student vs. faculty basketball game was held in the gym. Although the students had inspiring cheerleaders (Wayne Wilder-son. Frank Thorpe. Sean Harrison), the faculty team managed to inch past them for the final score. Hey. Yeah, like that. Well, anyway, this trend came from the show called The Great White North''. It's a two-minute segment of the SCTV Network program which parodies television shows. The Great White North spoofs Canadian television. Its hosts. Bob and Doug McKenzie, are two stero-typical. beer-chugging, bacon-frying Canadians. Each show, dressed in parkas, knit hats and boots, they introduce their topic of the day and then argue for the rest of the show, hurling quaint Canadian slang at each other like “Take off. ya hoseheadl . The pair's popularity increased tremendously after the McKenzies. alias Rick Moranis (Bob) and Dave Thomas (Doug), released a single in December, their version of “The 12 Days of Christmas : ... 4 pounds of back bacon. 3 french toast. 2 turtlenecks and a beer_______in a tree . Soon after, another McKenzies song was heard on the radio, a tune called Take-Off , recorded with Geddy Lee of Rush. The inane dia- logue of “The Great White North is the main reason fans find it so appealing. Good day. eh. They're my two favorite hosers . said senior Steve Daly. They resumed their past trend of outwitting their opponents even though they were a very young team. With one freshman, two juniors, and a senior, they were apprehensive about their performance, but came out victorious. Sarah Fike was captain, with Charles Horowitz, Marta Bowman, and David Wang as her talented teammates. They practiced as faithfully as members of any sports team with Mr. Yonker and Mr. Stern, advisors. The range of questions was incredible, and when they coalesced, they were a veritable encyclopedia of information. Top row John Yonker. Roy Fmden. host of High School Bowl; Richard Yonker. cooch.
