ee Anderson is the chairman of the Building and Grounds committee on the Board of Trustees and is largely responsible for raising the money for things like our hockey rink, the new classrooms in middle school and of course the buying and selling of our school. Lee Anderson went to Breck for his entire 12 years of schooling, he graduated in 1957. Both of his children attend Breck one in 5th grade and one in 7th grade and he is now one of Breck's most prominent alumnus. So, when you see that tall mysterious man roaming the hallways you'll know it’s our buddy Lee Anderson. Because of everything that Lee Anderson has done for Breck, the 1980-81 yearbook staff would like to give this special recognition to him. Thank you very much Mr. Anderson. We appreciate everything that you have done! 3

(continued on page S) ith Breck’s move to the Golden Valley site this summer, it seems that the theme of tradition over the years is appropriate. The combination of copy and pictures that follows from old to new and gold to blue tells the history of Breck. Breck as we know it today opened its doors on September 11, 1886 in Wilder, Minnesota. The purpose of Breck Mission and Farm School, Breck’s original name, was to establish an agriculture, science, business school and college for young men. During these first years, the school prospered with an average enrollment of three hundred pupils; the campus consisted of Whipple Hall (the classrooms), the chaple and a dormitory. In 1889, the school's name was changed to the Wilder Farm College. It wasn't until 1893 that the name was changed to Breck School to commemorate James Lloyd Breck, the founder of our institution. The courses offered were the basics of Science, Math, English, and Foreign Language with different levels of complexity. Disipline was strict and punishment was dealt with by the entire school. The tuition during the late 1800's never rose above one hundred and fifty dollars. Hard to believe (and that was the entire bill). But because of an increasingly large debt, the school was closed in 1915 for two years. After straightening its financial affairs Breck moved to its St. Anthony Park campus and was able to draw from a more heavily populated area. The school reopened in 1919 with new faculty and administration. Under the guidance of Superintendent Charles Haupt, Breck soon prospered. It is interesting to note that the student body in 1920 was thirty-four, there were only four seniors, and the tuition was three hundred dollars. During the twenties Breck grew slowly, building up it’s clubs and sports teams. Football was the favorite sport, and enjoyed by nearly the whole student body. Like today, those students planning to enter college took general mathematics, geometry, two years of english and two years of science. Bible classes and chapel periods were important parts of the day at Breck. It was in 1923 that Breck was first accredited by the University of Minnesota. The new building on campus, completed in 1929, was built on a high risk factor as funds were short, so tuition was doubled. With the onset of the depression, Breck was plagued with economic difficulties. Money was scarce but extensive renovation was needed on campus. It was during the thirties that Breck became a college preparatory 5
