1980 MUSTANG Students 14-94 Activities 96-123 Administration 123-135 I. I 1981 BRECK SCHOOL 4300 West River Road Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406 Wilder Campus 1886-1925 Como Campus 1917-1957 i River Road Campus 1957-1981 Dedication hat Is a school?-People. Ideas and a place to bang them oft together. 'We are the eck Famiy. and tor the past 23 years. 4200 'West River Road has been our home. Uke any other tamtty we both love and hate the place where we spend so much ot out time. Why would anyone leave this haven by the Mississippi, where the changing seasons ate laid out tor us to see In the reflection on the water? How many ot us can say that we haven't, at one time or another, turned away from the work at hand to watch the wind In the trees, stare at the clouds, or Just wonder about nothing? The beauty ot this campus will be remembered. Yet who but a tool would stay where their needs codd not be met. This campus has served It’s purpose and Is no longer adequate. We need more classrooms, more commons areas and more room to stretch both physically and InteiectucHy. Our new campus meets our new needs; It has tocities that will alow us to meet new academic, athletic, and artistic challenges and room enough to grow. It w take many classes, many chapels and much time spent Just living, walong the hols, chatting In quiet corners, running, shouting, throwing torbidden frizbees and eating contraband candy bars, to make the new building as much our own as this one was. Because we have spent 23 years here, we cannot leave without having some part ot the Breck spirit remain with us in the form of memories both good and bad. This year marks the end ot an era for Breck. As we fondly dedcate this yearbook to a place where many happy years have been spent, and look with regret upon leaving it. We also look forward to the years to come and promise to dedicate ourselves to making our new campus as much a part of us as this one was. ee Anderson is the chairman of the Building and Grounds committee on the Board of Trustees and is largely responsible for raising the money for things like our hockey rink, the new classrooms in middle school and of course the buying and selling of our school. Lee Anderson went to Breck for his entire 12 years of schooling, he graduated in 1957. Both of his children attend Breck one in 5th grade and one in 7th grade and he is now one of Breck's most prominent alumnus. So, when you see that tall mysterious man roaming the hallways you'll know it’s our buddy Lee Anderson. Because of everything that Lee Anderson has done for Breck, the 1980-81 yearbook staff would like to give this special recognition to him. Thank you very much Mr. Anderson. We appreciate everything that you have done! 3 PIO pnwawos (continued on page S) ith Breck’s move to the Golden Valley site this summer, it seems that the theme of tradition over the years is appropriate. The combination of copy and pictures that follows from old to new and gold to blue tells the history of Breck. Breck as we know it today opened its doors on September 11, 1886 in Wilder, Minnesota. The purpose of Breck Mission and Farm School, Breck’s original name, was to establish an agriculture, science, business school and college for young men. During these first years, the school prospered with an average enrollment of three hundred pupils; the campus consisted of Whipple Hall (the classrooms), the chaple and a dormitory. In 1889, the school's name was changed to the Wilder Farm College. It wasn't until 1893 that the name was changed to Breck School to commemorate James Lloyd Breck, the founder of our institution. The courses offered were the basics of Science, Math, English, and Foreign Language with different levels of complexity. Disipline was strict and punishment was dealt with by the entire school. The tuition during the late 1800's never rose above one hundred and fifty dollars. Hard to believe (and that was the entire bill). But because of an increasingly large debt, the school was closed in 1915 for two years. After straightening its financial affairs Breck moved to its St. Anthony Park campus and was able to draw from a more heavily populated area. The school reopened in 1919 with new faculty and administration. Under the guidance of Superintendent Charles Haupt, Breck soon prospered. It is interesting to note that the student body in 1920 was thirty-four, there were only four seniors, and the tuition was three hundred dollars. During the twenties Breck grew slowly, building up it’s clubs and sports teams. Football was the favorite sport, and enjoyed by nearly the whole student body. Like today, those students planning to enter college took general mathematics, geometry, two years of english and two years of science. Bible classes and chapel periods were important parts of the day at Breck. It was in 1923 that Breck was first accredited by the University of Minnesota. The new building on campus, completed in 1929, was built on a high risk factor as funds were short, so tuition was doubled. With the onset of the depression, Breck was plagued with economic difficulties. Money was scarce but extensive renovation was needed on campus. It was during the thirties that Breck became a college preparatory 5 7 (continued from pj(e 5) school for boys only. The best thing to happen to Breck at this time was the new Headmaster, Chester DesRochers. His energy and enthusiasm made great progress in all of school life. Many more courses were added, improving the curriculum. Dances were always the high point of the social life despite the fact that room mothers had to search the area for eligible dates. At the time of the second World War, Breck turned military as was the trend of the forties. The mid-winter formal was a truly spectacular event. Invitations to the President were sent though no President ever came. The military system reduced the need for discipline. It was then that the academic standards which we know today started at Breck. Heavy emphasis was placed on science, math and English as these were thought to be the most important subjects. Unlike today, horsemanship was one of the favorite activities of the cadets who not only exercised them but also did all the other chores associated with the care of horses. Due to the large number of problems in the late forties and early fifties the decision to build a new facility on the present site was voted through. With the new headmaster. Canon Henderson, and his futuristic insight, Breck enjoyed and has continued to enjoy a highly respected position of academic excellence. Under Canon Henderson's guidance, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit plus other additions were built. Up to his resignation in 1973, Breck continued to grow academically, with excellent faculty, winning sports teams and many interesting and productive organizations. During his administration in 1959 Breck stopped their military practices and in 1966 Breck became a coed high school. The revolutionary sixties did not pass Breck without incident as is evident in the example of the class of 1965, at that time senior privledges did not exist, but the seniors went out to lunch anyway, and were suspended for a short time. Upon Canon Henderson's retirement in 1973, John Littleford took up direction of Breck. Under his guidance, Breck has continued to make large advances in excellent college preparatory education. The modern version of the old Mustangs! Lunch hasn't changed that much. Classroom control isn’t what it used to be. . . . Something Gold Something Blue 12 Bustang Homecoming '80 was, to quote an old phrase, the best ever. This year's Homecoming was very special because it was the last one to be held at the River Road campus. 'i..e Student Council started preparations long before their first meeting. Homecoming Week started with Senior Freshman Day, and was followed by Hats and Sunglasses Day, Hero Day, Clash Day, and Blue and Gold Day on Homecoming Day. Prizes were given for the best costumes on H and S Day, Hero Day, and Clash Day. Some of the more interesting costumes on Hero Day were Hermit the Frog. Helen of Troy, The Jolly Green Giant, Mr. Miller, Hawkeye and Klinger of M°A S H. Homecoming Day brought out the spirit in a lot of people. Almost everyone was wearing blue and gold. Lower and Middle Schoolers were invited to the Coronation ceremonies where Peter Tester and Maya Klashnya were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. The Pepfest in the gym was full of balloons, pom-poms that had been sold by the cheerleaders, and Middle and Upper Schoolers. The enthusiasm from the Pepfest carried over to the soccer game, and the football game. The Homecoming slogan which was, “When the Co-Stars fall from the sky, the Spartans will whither and die. , did not completely come true, as the football team lost to SPA, but the soccer team beat Holy Angels with a score of 3-2. The theme of dance was the sixties. Hip outfits and cosmic vibrations filled the dance floor as EVERYONE danced! All in all, it turned out to be a fantastic Homecoming. 13 Senior SENIOR CLASS 1931 16 SENIOR CLASS 1981 c 17 Nicknames: Bully. Bel. Btg El. Slim. Iz. She is a miniature rabbit that has produced many offspring for the kindgarten families to adopt. Predominantly grey-black in color, she was donated by the Glosows. At the beginning of the year, the students were taught about animals — particularly rabbits. Each week a different student took the responsibility for Cindy's daily feedings of lettuce, carrots, pellets, and fresh water. This year, the day began at an apple orchard. The children learned how the apples are picked, washed, and packaged. Once back at Breck, the next day, the kindergarten room was turned into a bakery. The children peeled, cored, and sliced the fruit, supervised by their teachers. Then Hour, sugar, and a few other ingredients were mixed to form a pie crust. Says Ms. Casar, The kids did it all. and the pie turned out beautifully! The kindergarterners enjoyed the work, but all agreed that the best part was eating the pie. 53 Peter Brambl Marisa Patrick Dale Betsey Malaika Grant David Coughlan Rachael Frush Fuerstenberg J. Her curriculum includes field trips to museums, the planetarium, the New Zoo. and the arboretum. Her most enjoyable experience was spent in 1975 during Japan Week. In this, she learned more than she expected — so much that she now is able to teach a little bit about Japan each year. She teaches first grade because she gets great satisfaction from teaching children so young and eager to learn. Her view on the move to Golden Valley is that the bigger facilities will create more opportunities for the children to have fun while learning. Yet she is apprehensive that close relationships within the school will be lost. Like WOW man, wild and crazy deal! 77 by Rebekah Greenwald f 1981 was a terrific year for Middle School. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. Kreischer. and the returning faculty, the year went by fairly quickly. New faculty arrived and somehow survived the year. Linda Eugster took over seventh grade English and seventh and eighth grade Speech and Debate Peter Hodne came as fifth and sixth grade History teacher and as Maverick advisor Katie Lewis taught a section of eighth grade Math, and Bonnie Regalman took over fifth and sixth grade Math. Anna Beyer came as Breck's new art teacher, and Robert Evans arrived to lead Breck's band. Middle Schoolers had a great deal of special events. Hayrides. roller skating. Camp Saint Croix, parties. and dances were wen attended and certainly enjoyed. At the end of the year, the eighth graders spent two weeks at Camp Warren, with various forms of Nature education. A new health program was introduced for fifth and seventh graders, taught by Debbie Rye-Kordosky. as well as a new elective called Student Leadership, which replaced Student Council. Breck continued its successful Minnesota Orchestra program, culminating in the Breck Christmas program at Orchestra Hall. The students took on a more introspective attitude, reflecting on their lives at Breck. The atmosphere changed a little bit from last year, it felt warmer and there was a unity between all the students. These good feelings were mostly due to the seniors, who seemed to have the right direction in life. The class trips were especially good for all 4 grades. Each trip gave the students a chance to open up, relax and sort out their feelings about life and Breck. Through their performances at many basketball games, the Open House, and the Spring Concert, they exhibited a great deal of dedication and service to the Breck Community. 99 Breck Singers The Brcck Singers began their second year in full force. Under direction of Mr. Steen they began preparing for the Regional Vocal Contest, The Christmas Program at Orchestra Hall, and for other performances in school and off- campus. To enhance their program, they put together a medley of songs from the Fiddler on the Roof’. The medley was staged and the Singers dressed in Traditional (almost) Russian costumes. With the new fascilities awaiting us at Golden Valley, we hope that the Singers will increase in size next year. Many of the soloists starred in the State Vocal Contest. The singers are composed of 16 selected voices from the upper school. Front Row: C. Andrews, D. Harrison, C. DcGcyndt, A. Lineli. Second Row: N. Wilson. M. Klashnya, J. Hassclmann, Third Row:S. His first exposure to private school was when he started at a Quaker School in Baltimore, Maryland. He was involved in the drama club, chorus and athletics. He spent two years at Dickinson College before transfering to Princeton University, graduating with a triple major in Russian, Chinese and Government. After obtaining his masters from Harvard he began to teach, first in New Jersey then at a girls' boarding school in Virginia. Recruited by the Board of Trustees he began his job as Headmaster in July, 1974. In his free time he and his wife are movie buffs, attending both new features and old classics. He enjoys his vacations at his cabin on Lake Huron or in Florida with his parents. i Kathryn Harper Headmaster -Assistant Ms. Harper was brought up by her grandmother in the small town of Sylvania, Georgia. She describes her childhood days as lull of skinned knees, jeans, and braids, a true tomboy. A sharp shooter at marbles, Ms. Harper had an interest in English and planned to do missionary work. She has always been an avid reader and secretly aspired to become a famous singer. She attended Paine or “Pain” College in Savannah, Georgia as she referred to it, where her major was English. She earned a teacher's certificate and later did graduate work at the University of Minnesota. First a Brcck parent in 1970 she was then hired to teach English, head the English Department, the Upper School and at present is the Assistant Headmaster. She misses the contact with the students and hearing about their plans for the future. She is married, a mother of four and a mixture between the traditional mother and today's career woman. She enjoys the theatre, basketball games, bridge, cooking and dinner parties. 126 — Mr. Bill Whitcher Director Of Upper School Mr. Whitcher grew up in Rockford, Illinois where he excelled in academics and athletics, though he said, I was a discipline problem. He attended Northwestern University (or undergraduate work in psychology and on to Columbia University for graduate studies. After two years in Moscow, traveling extensively in Europe, Asia and North Africa he answered an ad in the paper and began at Breck in 1977. He is currently the Head of the Upper School. Mr. Whitcher enjoys a good Mexican meal, a concert by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, skiing, ethnic restaurants, reading and his duties as a father. Mr. Bob Kreischer Director Of Middle School Mr. Kreischer has been Head of the Middle School for the past two years. He is married with two children. When not at Breck he enjoys sports, his family, movies, reading and gardening. He is enthusiastic about working at Breck because he likes kids. Decisions concerning admissions, discipline and paperwork annoy him but Snoopy cartoons, especially Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown relieves the Breck stress. You win some and you lose some but you always dress for the game. Mr. Wilson has been the Head of the Lower School for six of his seven years at Breck. He likes to watch the lower schoolers grow up and become adults. He grew up in Wisconsin and New Mexico before graduating from Dartmouth College. He remembers teaching for two years to a class of fifty students in Cameron, South Africa. He has an interest in music, having sung in the St. Mark's Cathedral Choir for the past seven years. He is married and enjoys cross-country skiing, running, bicycling and sailing. Thanks Anne for doing all those proof corrections and editing Sarah's less-than-tasteful captions; and thanks. Sarah for all those less-than-tasteful captions that made editing this book so fun! Thanks Rebekah for writing all the copy on the special sections; those special sections are the best part of the book. Heidi and Nancy, your senior layouts were superbly done! Tracy, Jennifer and Helen, your part of this book is, of course, the most important, and turned out really well. Mary, thanks for all the effort you put into the sports section. Amy, your faculty and administration section is great. Maya, for the second year in a row, your Fine Arts Section was beautifully done.
