Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1977 volume:

BRECK SCHOOL 4200 West River Road Minneapolis, Minnesota ROBERT CHARLES DEDOLPH In September of 1969 Mr. Dedolph came to Breck School as Head of the Science Department. He left in the fall of 1976 Two 1 of Mr. Dedolph's children. Maggie('73) and Carldton (72) both graduated from Breck. He and his wife Lorraine and children lived in a house built by Mr. Dedolph in St. Croix Beach. As an extremely active and interested member of the school. Mr. Dedolph served on the Academic Committee and as an Advisor. As a teacher he was dedicated to his students' success. He encouraged his students to strive academically. In cadence with con-cern for his students was his warm sense of humor. A class time did not pass without a joke from Mr. Dedolph. His dry sense of humor added optimism to the worst of report cards. With deep appreciation and thanks this 1977 Breck Mustang is dedicated to Mr. Robert Charles Dedolph. Paul Bernstein (10). John Blair (10). and Joel Halpern (10). In the third round game they beat Orono in a sudden death overtime. Orono challenged an earlier question 2 weeks later and KSTP requested a rematch. Breck lost the rematch by 10 points. The gameending whistle blew just after Breck answered a toss-up question giving them a chance for a 20 point bonus. 1976 The 1976 team won a second state championship. Alice Goodman (12) was captain. Paul Bernstein (11) was on the team as a regular for his third year. Scott Hedblom (11) was a regular, and Tim Kennedy (11). Jacques Ya-Deau (10) and John Blair (11) were on the team at different times. They edged Southwest 305-250 in the semi-final game, and crushed St. Paul Park 305-200. The last two games were great team efforts. BONSTlft 1977 Last year a lot of people said. What are you going to do next year without Alice? Paul Bernstein. captain. John Blair. Scott Hedblom. Jacques YaDeau and Tim Kennedy have answered the question emphatically. They demolished Wayzata 360-45 in the first game, and defeated Blake in the second game 305-260. Coach Richard Yonker is confident of a third state title in six years. Breck's cumulative record after the Blake game was 21-3. Judd Maslansky. This is the first year Breck has had a full-scale debate and forensics program. Coached by Michael Crary. a top National Collegiate debater for Maca-lester College from 1970-73. the team scored tremendous success for a new program. They began with 23 students in Novice competition, the first year debaters’ catagory. By January, four students had advanced to Varsity competition, competing against debaters with three to five years of experience. Even at the varsity level the team was successful, including wins over 25 varsity teams. The novice team compiled a 44-10 record, tops for any novice team in the state. Breck hosted two debate tournaments this year. OFFICERS AND SENIORS: Shawn Kennon. David Olin. Sally Archer. Gary Benton, Donna Bosold. Judd Maslansky. TOP TEAM: Andy Reid. The Breck community has benefited from that decision ever since. Mr. Krenz has taught not only English but also French, music, and drama during his many years of service. His enthusiasm and diverse personality will long be remembered by all. Olga Berg has taught Lower School art for twenty-six years since she came to Breck in 1950. Mrs. Berg has procured the work of many different artists which she has displayed throughout the school. Her many years of dedication to Breck are greatly appreciated by all and we wish her the best for her retirement. 194 . MAE POLSON Thirty-four years ago Mae Poison began teaching the second grade at Breck. She has continued to emphasize the basics in her classroom and has maintained high standards of academic excellence in the Lower School. Her devotion to her many students along with a strong dedication to Breck School are appreciated by all. Breck owes her a debt of gratitude. 195 ADVERTISING CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1977 THE BRECK BOARD OF TRUS AM J9 A THE BRECK MOTHERS’ CLUB WM . Anderson Tom-Bob-Jim Conserve energy — insulate High School Bowl 1972 Breck’s first High School Bowl team was made up entirely of tenth graders, Eric Terzuolo (captain), Charlie Baker, James Weiner, and Kent Olson. This up-tart group nearly took the state chamf on-ship. They soundly defeated the J )71 winner, St. Paul Park, which had its e tire team back. They lost to St. Thomas ir he last few minutes of the finals after lea ng during most of the game. They ha no break after winning the semi-final g ne the same day. The winner of the sec d semi-final game must play the final dir t-ly after this game, and has lost it e y time through 1977. 1973 Alice Goodman (9) and Roger Dahl (12) combined with Eric (captain) and Jim to provide a devasting team. They beat an overconfident Jefferson team in the finals by about 400 points. The four Jefferson seniors had beaten all of their opponents by large margins and they flaunted their superiority. Jefferson scored negative 20 points in the second half as Breck won 450-45. 1974 Eric graduated early — Breck wouli have had an incredible team with him a; senior captain. However, with three yea' veteran Jim Weiner as captain. Alice re turning as a tenth grader. Roger Ran. (12). and Paul Bernstein starting as illus trious four year term on the team. Bred-nearly went all the way. After winning its first three games decisively, they were edged by a great St. Anthony team in the' semi-finals. The four appearances on tele vision in 1974 provided a great preparation for the years ahead for Goodman anc Bernstein. This experience would pay of in 1976.
