KATHLEEN HARSHBARGER The 1973 Mustang is dedicated to a woman who is truly a fine teacher and who loves working with our younger students. She is a quiet, unassuming person whose diligence and personal warmth have endeared her to the Breck community. Mrs. Harshbarger has been at Breck since 1957-16 of her 26 years of teaching. She has taught primarily math in grades 4-6. For a short while she served as the first Dean of Girls helping her fledglings make the transition into seventh grade and adjust to what had been an all boys school. But her first love remained teaching the elementary students, and she soon resumed her full-time devotion to them. This year she is co-ordinator of the third and fourth grade curriculum and teaches all subjects in the fourth grade. The Mustang and the Breck community salute Mrs. Harshbarger. We thank her for her loyalty, kindness, patience, and hard work and hope that such a high quality teacher and fine, understanding human being will continue to serve Breck School for many years. 7 Editor- Mike Mamer Girls Sports Editor - Sarah Drill Assistant Editor ‱ Renee Swicord Student Pictures K ‱ 11 Mary Pick and Vicky McComb Business Editor - Reuben Anderson Extra - Curricular Activities Boys Sports Editor - David Jenkins Barb Miller and Jane Tornstrom Assistant Sports Editor - Jon Crist Photography: Chief Photographer and Color pictures - Jon Crist Assistant Photographers ‱ Gary Stone David Jenkins Roger Ranz Larry Baldwin Griff Brown Kevin Freund Staff Artist - Pier Gustafson Advisor- Mr. Michael Weiszel 1973 MUSTANG STAFF 8 HEADMASTER This is Canon F. Canon has established progress in all areas, enabling Breck to meet the needs of the present and the challenges of the future. His capability and enthusiasm are shown in the significant developments which have affected all phases of Breck life. Through his Sacred Studies classes Canon has won the respect and friendship of the seniors. His knowledge and understanding of the problems that face youth today have been a great help to the students. Canon’s leadership and devotion to the school have made Breck the excellent school it is today. 10 ASSISTANT HEADMASTER As Assistant Headmaster of Breck School, it is the responsibility of Mr. Robert Aarthun to maintain order and discipline, effect new developments, pick up problems and discuss solutions to these with Canon Henderson and other administrative members. But Mr. Aarthun goes far beyond these functions. He has taken a deep interest in all students and their academic and athletic education. The department consists of a strong program at the even grade levels. The goals of the religious department go beyond the usual instruction in the fundamental aspects of religion, striving to instill in each student a keener awareness of the world around him and a deeper concern for his fellow human beings. The program begins in the fourth and sixth grades, where Mrs. Hancock exposes her students to Christian morals and ethics. At the eighth and tenth grade level,Rev. Babbitt expands the program to include evaluation of one's inner self and his relationship with God and society. Senior Sacred Studies attempts to solve problems concerning both Breck and our world in general. 16 17 Mr David Knoblauch Boys Phy.-Ed She can't kick us oot-we're Seniors! In the middle of its term the Council opted to expand its body from 16 to 22. one new representative from each class. The larger group worked well through the year as more students were represented and more students participated in Breck affairs. On Jan. 12 the Council held its first flexible day. This Student-Teacher Day provided opportunities for students to talk to teachers and for teachers to explain their courses. In the afternoon of that day the Talent Show was presented. From Nov. through the end of the School year, the Lunch Committee met with Mr. Woodhull and the Head cook to improve the menus.
