Her tenure of service to Breck has been unrivaled by anyone within the school. Her service to the school is a symbol of ex- cellence. Always striving to improve the academic standing of the cadets, she has more than done her share. The staff as a whole were completely green to the business of putting out a yearbook. By collecting the knowledge they did know by experience and consul they learned the technic of publishing a yearbook. Jim Medelman took on the job of editor this year and he did what may be considered an excellent job. He came through when the going was tough and encouraged his staffto go on to completion. A yearbook is no better than its layout and this job was willingly taken over by Jeff Ferster in the steps of his brother Marshall former Mustang layout editor. Jeff worked hard and long to put this book together in its final form and our thanks can not be enough for his part well done. Tom Lawson,Harvey White, Bruce Kobs, John Mac Farlane, and Nelson Whyatt lent their writing abil- ities to producing the copy necessary. They did this often under the stress and strain of meeting that old devil, the deadline. The publishers of the book was the American Yearbook Company located in Owatonna, Minn. To the people there, the staff owes special thanks for their patience and understanding of our problems. John Miss did an excellent job as photographer as is shown throughout the book. The cover is by the American Yearbook Company also. The man behind the scenes was ofcourse Mr. L. R. Milburn the faculty advisor. Without his ability in the yearbook production business we would never have been able to make the grade. He inspired everyone on the staff to put the idea of excellence into their work and that is just what we have done. Much work and also much fun has been put into this book. Our only hope is that you enjoy it as much as we did in putting it out. The Staff 12 uf? Nl in The Bugle Staff 1'l0l1I Rolf. LP? t right: David Brown John Mav- Farlane. Ballard Fred's pleasant smile and cheerful greetings will always be remembered many years after he has graduated. His unimposing manner made him one of the most likable seniors Breck has seen in a long time. He has done many things to his credit in the few years he has been a member of the corps. ln athletics Fred has played football for the Mustangs every year he has been here. His con- tributions to the team have been duly appreciated by both his teammates and the student body. Fred attained the rank of first lieutenant as the leader of one of the A company platoons. Through his perseverance he has molded the members of his platoon into a first class outfit. Fred was a tireless worker on many of the undertakings of his class. When there was a job to be done, he was there to do it. He contributed much to the journalism de- partment in the line of photography. There are many evidences of this work in the MUSTANG. Fred's pleasing personality will be missed by his underclassmen as he graduates. He will leave behind a memory of himself that will stay for many years to come. 133 Entered l9'l8, 7 Years, Corporal 2, Sergeant 4, Crack Platoon 1, 2, Student Council 2, Intramural Basketball 2g Homecoming Committee 41, Military Ball Committee -lg Service Award lg Six Weeks Perfect Attendance 2, Honor Roll 1, Combat Team l, 2, Boxing Champion lg Yearbook Staff lg Ef- hciency Award. Sergeant Marvin A. Bloom 4 Returning to Breck in his senior year, Marvin Bloom quickly became an important part of the school. His winning personality and friendly smile soon won him a host of friends. You could always count on Marv's keen sense of humor to bring smiles to every face. In military, Marvin lost no time in earning the rank of Sergeant, which is surely a tribute to his ability. ln the post of sergeant of the third platoon of B company, Marv could always be counted upon to do his job smoothly and efficiently. Perhaps the most well known fact about Mar- vin Bloom, however, is that he drives to school in a neat Chevy Convertible. The sound and sight of this turquoise beauty is well known to everyone on the campus. Although not known for his ability in sports, Marv could always be counted on to support the teams. Socially Marvin was active, and rarely missed a dance or other social function. When Marvin graduates this spring, Breck will lose one of the friendliest, most likeable boys it has known. 134 When a job had to be done and done well 'l'ony Cheek could be called upon to do it. He is char- acterized by quiet competence. After being at llreck only one year he was elected president of his class as a junior and did such a commendable job that he was re-elected as a senior. Tony has a great knack for organizing. This became evident the Hrst time that he was called upon to help with a dance. He took it over and almost singlehandedly made it a success. His leadership and organization were obvious in military also. He became a first lieutenant in his senior year and whipped the Hrst platoon of A Company into a snappy unit. Although not athletically inclined he worked hard, drove himself, and won a defensive position on the hockey team He could be counted upon to cheer the members of the other teams on. He had a vast amount of school spirit which rubbed off on his associates. After he had Hnished decorating and organizing a dance he would always show up at the festivities with his steady date, Mary. He always added a great deal to a social function with his clever con- versation and quick smile. Breck loses a real friend and backer when Tony graduates. 135 Entered l952. First Lieutenant Anthony Felton Cheek 2!5::f'ffe?Xil3 M-8-. 1 Cliff Comfort has a free and easy manner which no doubt has helped him through his three years at Breck. During this time, Cliff has accomplished many things. Whether on the athletic field, on the dance floor, or in the military department, Cliff's efforts are evident. In football he worked hard to hold his varsity position and he did much to bolster the team. He also played baseball during the spring season. Cliff had a part in all of the social functions that his class undertook and he was always de- pendable for support for all types of social affairs. His carefree way relieved much of the tension of planning dances and in this way he helped them to be the successes they were. He attained the rank of first lieutenant as a pla- toon leader in B company. His platoon consisted of seventh graders who are pretty inexperienced along military lines. Nevertheless Cliff took the challenge of building them up into a first class military unit. He accomplished this through persistent use of his leadership qualities. As Cliff leaves Breck, there will depart a leader of unlimited possibilities. He will continue to at- tain great accomplishments wherever he goes throughout the future. Second Lieutenant Charles Grayson Edwards M-'Lam Y gf fi If you could not find Charlie Edwards in the band room you'd probably spot him in a snow drift wear- ing his storm coat and garrison belt waiting for the 3:15 bus. Chuck's first love was the band! In his senior year he was given the post of band commander. He was especially suited for this position because of his love for music. It was a dark day indeed, when you could not hear Charlie's voice echoing through the halls as he hummed a new tune he had just heard One of his most outstanding characteristics was his friendly nature. Many dull mornings were made cheerier by his bright Hello and happy smile. Charlie did not enter any sports, but could always be counted on to be on hand for the games. When basketball season rolled around he took part of his beloved band and played for the games. Any player on the team will attest to the fact that his music helped win the game. His tattered brief case showed his dogged efforts in his studies. Without a doubt, it can be said that Charlie Edwards had something to do with almost every thing in school. He faithfully executed the tasks at hand and then went quietly on to the next. Whether he was attending a symphony to quench his thirst for music, or running down the hill to catch the 3:15, Charlie Edwards was always an outstanding Breck boy. It will be a long time before the void he leaves can be filled. 137 Ifntercd l95l. Scholastically he has always ranked near the top ol' his class. llis excellent logic and reasoning power made liini a standout. especially in mathe- matics. In athletics he lettered in baseball and basket- ball all four years and he earned three varsity foot- ball letters. His ninety-seven yard interception run- back of a Shattuck pass will not soon be forgotten. In his senior year Haggy was co-captain of the foot- ball team and captain of both the basketball and baseball teams. He was selected for all-conference honors in both football and basketball. ln'his fresh- man year he was a luminary in intramural boxing and was chosen as the best boxer in the tournament. Bill could be counted upon to support any social function. He always managed to bring a pretty date with him too. He was co-chairman of the Mili- tary Ball this year and was quite influential in its success. In military Hag rose steadily in rank through his ability to lead. As a senior he became the cadet major and battalion commander. His quick wit and humor made him a favorite orator in bull sessions. He was a loyal friend to the school and with his graduation we lose a true credit to Breck. 138 A flash of red, a cloud of carbon monoxide fumes, and a squeakg there goes .lack Hawe in his flashy SO Plymouth convertible. Jack is notorious for his excellent taste in women, and his friends from Monroe High. He is well liked by everyone, and has a happy- go-lucky, friendly spirit and sense of humor which ought to carry him far. In his junior year, ,lack joined the Breck Band, but decided the life of a music maker was not for him, so in his senior year he joined B Company and became Platoon Sergeant of Second Platoon. Jack is prominent in all aspects of school life. He was a member of the Glee Club and is a main- stay of the newly formed Conservation Club. Jack has also done some journalism work. Not until his senior year did ,lack's sports ability receive recognition. Jack held an important posi- tion on the Varsity football team and could always be counted on to support it and to promote school spirit. His happy go lucky personality has helped him gain many friends during his stay at Breck. When the going was tough-you could always depend on Terry for seeing the brighter side of the situa- tion. Although Terry never excelled in academic standing he has contributed much to the corps in other fields. In athletics, although not a natural athlete, Terry won a place on the varsity football team. Here again his witty personality relieved the tension of competition. His team mates will never forget him for it. In the military department Terry has attained a rank of sergeant. His influence over his underclass- men has helped him considerably in this field. He has been very helpful in shaping up the cadets into a precisioned, well drilled outfit. As Terry graduates, the school will lose a per- son to whom it owes a great deal. Every class needs to have a free and easy going person to make all the tough times more endurable. Cadet Captain James Kyle Medelman ,IIA If there ever was a boy who exemplified the spirit of Breck, it was James Medelman. He was always ready to help and to do his part in any project that needed attending to. Scholastically, Jim held his own too. To prove that he was a hard and conscientious worker, he con- sistently was placed on the honor roll. In the military department he was also at the top. He attained the rank of captain in his senior year and was made commander of B Company. He helped teach the younger cadets some of their basic military too. The football team will suffer from the loss of '4Potts Medelman as he was called by his class mates. He was always a hard, honest and fair com- petitor. Many a crucial play was saved for the Mustangs by one of ,lim's blocks or tackles. Next year's team will certainly miss his fine ability and team spirit. In the social department, ,lim could always be counted on to serve on committees or assist on any other problem that might arise in the social cal- endar. He was a regular attendant and supporter of all social functions. In his senior year, Jim took on the gargantuan job of being the editor of the Breck Mustang. This in itself could be a full time occupation. It required hours of his time and energy. Certainly much praise should go to him in this field. Last of all, and most important, Jim Medelman was a gentleman. It was a rare occasion when he would raise his voice or utter a harsh word. Cadet First Lieutenant John Allan Nelson With .lohn Nelsonis graduation, the corps will lose one of its most versatile members. Who won't miss ,lohn's big cheery smile every morning as they come to school? ,lohn's work with the eighth graders in military only exemplifies his leadership qualities. 'l'hrough the school year he shaped his platoon into the sharpest and most precisioned unit in B company. Socially John had his hand in almost every event that came along his way. At homecoming he contributed all his effort to make the event the suc- cess that it was. At the military ball he again showed this same enthusiasm and eagerness to pitch right into the problem at hand. John served his class as both an oflicer many times and also during the past year as a member of the cadet board. His clear thinking on various situations helped gain this honored position. These same characteristic qualities show up in other fields such as athletics. Here ,lohn's determina- tion for success won him a place on the varsity football team in his junior and senior years . . . Scholastically he has made a better than average showing. 142 One of the first things you will notice about John Newell is his friendliness and his ability to make you like him. He is always ready with a warm smile and a cheery HHH Johnny is reliable and can always be depended upon to help in any situation and he is always pro- moting school spirit. In the field of sports, John ranks among the top athletes of the class of '55. He played on the foot- ball team and holds down a position in varsity hockey. He is naturally large and packs a lot of power, thus being an asset to all the teams. . His voice is heard ringing in the downstairs hall as he commands the second platoon of A company. Militarily, John has gained the rank of first lieuten- ant in charge of one of the snappiest outfits in the corps. John,s scholastic marks are always good, and his math prowess is well known. Socially, he is Hin the swing. He and Sue Cornell can be seen together at almost every dance. At the 1955 Military Ball he tied for first honors in the Senior Ladies' Ceremony. Good luck, .lohnl We hate to see you go, but we know you will be successful in all your under- takings. 14-3 Entered 1911-5, 10 YCBTSQ P.F.C. 23 Corporal 23 Sergeant 3g Second Lieutenant 4-3 First Lieutenant 43 Crack Platoon 23 Junior Varsity Football lg Varsity Football 2, 3, 43 Varsity Hockey 33 Varsity Baseball 33 43 Yearbook 33 Class Vice President 13 Efficiency 2, 33 Outstanding Effort 1, 23 Intramural Boxing 1g Intramural Basketball 1, 2, 3, 43 Intra- mural Hockey 2, 33 Combat Team 1, 2, 3g Platoon Leader 43 Cadet Board 2. First Lieutenant John Cameron Newell Lee Owens is a truly outstanding figure-skater. He is blessed with wonderful coordination and sense of balance. This friendly, quiet boy has received many awards and trophies during his skat- ing career. His long hours of patient practice have paid off for him. While many of us have trouble on a wooden dance floor, Lee has skated away with many blue ribbons for his skill at dancing on ice. In 1953, Lee and his partner won third place in the national junior pairs. Lee has more than just an ability to skate well. ln military his smooth efliciency and neat appear- ance won him the rank of captain and operations officer on the batallion staff. His ability to organize will be a great asset to him in whatever he does in the future. Although Lee is a natural athlete, he could not afford to be injured playing a sport because of his skating. He showed his excellent school spirit and interest in athletics, however, by managing the foot- ball team in his junior and senior years. He did an admirable job and proved himself handy with a roll of tape. Lee was a firm supporter of Breck which he proved by backing social functions regularly. His likeable personality, friendly smile, and warm handshake will be sorely missed. 144 Entered l952, 3 Years, Corporal 2g Sergeant 2g First Lieutenant 43 Captain 4, Manager of Football Team, 3, 4g Batallion Staff 4, Operations Officer 43 Basketball 3, Baseball 2, 3, 4, Military Ball Com- mittee 4g Crack Platoon 2, 3. Sergeant First Class William O. Snipes - M, t gg Who will soon forget Bill Snipes and his many nicknames such as the Snippern and Snip? Bill was never very interested in sports, with the exception of tennis and baseball. His prowess with the ball and racket is unusual, and his high position on the tennis team accounts for it. Besides tennis, Bill is quite a weight lifter. Ask him and he will describe in complete detail his many hours and experiences down at the St. Paul Athletic Club. lf you donit look out, Bill will take your head off about New York and his experiences on the subways. N. Y. is one of his major interests. In his senior year, Bill joined the Breck Band, where he plays a hot,' bass drum and has attained the military rank of sergeant first class. Scholastically, Bill was always near the top, espe- cially in Spanish, and he always proved his worth in fine marks in the other classes. Socially speaking, one could always count on 'ithe Snip to be present at school functions, and he was in a four way tie in the traditional Seniors Ladies Ceremony at the Military Ball. The University of Minnesota will gain and Breck will lose by the departure of this happy, loyal cadet. 146 Bill has spent several profitable years at Breck during which he has accumulated many achieve- ments for himself. Also he has contributed more than his share to the school life. Militaristically he attained the rank of captain early in the year. This was his recognition of his splendid efforts as a supply officer during his junior and senior years. He successfully made the change- over from the old Springfield rifles to the more modern M-l rifles last November. Athletically Bill overcame both inexperience and lack of size to gain himself a place on the football team during his senior year. He did this by concentrated effort and work on his part which paid off dividends to both himself and his team mates. Bill supported all the social functions during his stay at Breck. He could always be counted on to pitch in wholeheartedly whenever decorating or planning was needed to make some event successful. This ever evident loyalty and enthusiasm will be missed in the following years as Bill graduates with his class. It will follow him however and help him to conquer all the problems he will encounter in the world beyond high school. 147 Entered 1952, 3 Years, Corporal 3, Sergeant 3, Lieutenant 43 Captain 4, Supply Sergeant 2, 3, Supply Officer 43 Batallion Staff 2, 3, 4g Crack Pla- toon 2g Varsity Football 4, Varsity Track 3g ln- tramural Hockey 2, 3, 45 Intramural Basketball 2 3, 4, Homecoming Committee 43 Military Ball Com- mittee 3, 4, Dormitory 2, Dormitory Officer 3, 4, Service Award 33 Six Weeks Perfect Attendance 33 Conservation Club 4g Combat Team 2, 3g Boarder Flag Detail 2, 3. Captain William H. Walton YK! ai 9 When seven day hoarding ended at Breck, Frank had little troulile staying on. This lroy from Duluth was so well liked that he was invited to spend week- ends at the homes of his classmates. Ile was always ready to flash a friendly smile and lend a helping hand. Frank lmecame a captain and cadet adjutant in his senior year. lie ran the demerit system quite smoothly. ln athletics 'wkvilsu really held his own. Although not a natural athlete in size he made up for it lay lrcing a hery competitor. :Xt his defensive end posi- tion on the foothall squad he was always out- weighed, liut rarely outplayed. Frank was a first- rate wing on the hockey team for two years and he heeame remembered for his ahility to dish it out as well as take it. Although Frank never shone as a student he always worked diligently and won admiration from his fellow students. When it came to social affairs Frank could he counted upon. His hard work and enthusiasm con- trilmuted greatly to many a dance and especially to this yearis Military Ball. Breck loses a real friend with the graduation of Frank Wilstiii and we know that his ahility to make friends and work hard will always help him.
