Many students participated in sports which were not school-spon- sored. Some were involved in gym- nastics, During their evening classes they would work on parallel bars , balance beams, floor exercises, and the vault. Deanna LaPrade said, It really gave you a chance to express yourself. Two other sports were softball and teenage baseball. Both were played in spring and summer. Winners often played into late july and early August going as high as na- tional competition. Soccer attracted many students during its fall-winter season. One player said, Soccer is a growing sport. It requires you to play as a team not as an individual. Soccer teams practiced after school, at least one on the band practice field, and played on weekends against other local and area teams. 1 K 1 f. e.:.-.., 'f f . sw, . . ,Y . .. g3wq',.ip,k .Vt 5.1.1, .4 . . l. One of the school's many required courses is Phys- ical Education QPEJ. Seven quarters are required for graduation. Most students take their first quarter of PE in ninth grade as part of a I-IealthfPE program. During the remaining two years, students generally get a choice of sports and activities unless they are enrolled in a special ath- letic class, such as foot- ball or volleyball. The choice ranges from soft- ball to basketball to swim- ming with sports like archery and tennis some- where in between. The main exception to the sev- en quarter PE requirement is band members, who get one quarter of PE credit for marching season. 5,-,,-....q......-r .-....... 9-A-0: -.
