Political Science Club Active In Mock Trials The Political Science Club began its first year by electing as president, Tonya Lanth- rip, vice-president, Kelly Abendroth, sec- retary Cheryl Tollett, and treasurer, Candi Caperton. The group's objective was to give its members opportunities to learn more about political institutions and attitudes in a democratic system. The club was able to watch the National Mock Trail Competition in which students from major law schools argued in mock court cases. Club members met and talked with Leon jaworski, former Special Pros- ecutor for the Supreme Court Watergate case, who was serving as judge for the competition. The Political Science Club was able to participate in mock trials at the Brazoria County competition held at the Angleton courthouse. They argued trial cases, com- peting with students from other high schools, and placed third. The club attended a city council meeting and a BISD school board meeting. They also had an Iranian guest speaker who talked about the overthrow of the Shah and what life was like under his rule. Sponsor LaVern john said, l think they're so much more aware of how political and economic decisions in the community influence their lives. Valedictorian Karen Stewart Karen felt that receiving the top scholastic honor was a worthwhile reward for four years of effort. Karen was on drill team for three years and captainduring her senior year. She was Brazoria County DAR repre- sentative and Clute Optimist youth for the day. She was in Latin Club and National Honor Society two years and was Latin vice- president her senior year. She was in junior and senior Who's Who and a member of the first place American and World history teams at Bee College Social Science con- tests. Her merit awards were English I, ll, Comp A and B, College Prep, American and ew, world history, Algebra ll, geometry, Trig, W Spanish ll, Latin l, ll, Physical Science, Bi- ology I and Chemistry l.
