Buc Band Has Great Year The band started off the season with a new band director, Bill Gottschalk, and in new uniforms , which were the pride of every band member. Also the band purchased some new instruments . The band started the year by raising enough money to cover the tour, concert band trips, cokes, dances, special contests, and other activities by selling candles , raising over 558000 dollars. A larger twirling line lead the band, and a flag corp was added. Also some students competed in solo and ensemble con- tests , district through all-state tryouts , freshman all-region band, band concert and sight reading con- tests, and jazz contests. One of the most exciting activities during the year was being able to march in the Astro- dome for a Houston Oiler game. 4 Stage Bands jazz It Up The halls were filled first and sixth periods with the sound of music from the stage bands. Gregg Smith and George Boozalis on trombone, Mark Evans on drums, Doug Dewey on trumpet, and Tony Spell on bass trombone and George Booza- lis on alternate trombone made the all- state jazz ensemble. Tapes of Tony and George were made at Alvin College. The morning stage band practiced dur- ing first period. They participated in the Brazosport College jazz Festival. They also participated in the Lee College Stage Band Contest and in the Wharton Stage Band Contest, receiving first division rat- ings at both . The afternoon stage band practiced sixth period. They also participated in the Bra- zosport College jazz Festival as well the Wharton Stage Band Contest and the Lee College Stage Band contest, and played at the football banquet. They received first divisions at Wharton and Lee Colleges.
