Varsity Baseball Captures Quarter-Finals While most students were enjoying the first weeks of summer va- cation, the varsity baseball team was battling its way through the state playoffs . ' With a pre-district season record of seven wins, nine losses and the consolation title and third place title from the Wharton and Texas City tournaments, the varsity fought up to its nine wins, l loss dis- trict championship record. The Bucs had some outstanding games uring the district season, such as the game against Victoria where hey scored four runs in the fifth inning to win the game 4-2, and the 'game where they were behind to El Campo 2-1 and then came up in he last inning to tie the score and then win with a two-run homer by IBobby Williams. The Bucs entered the playoffs against Austin Lanier. They won the irst game 4-l , lost the second 3-0, and then charged back to take he bi-district championship 14-12. Their winning steak continued as hey fought Edinberg for the regional title on its home field in front f a crowd of 5500. They won that game 2-0, and then beat Edinberg gain 7-0 at Corpus Christi, despite having their bus from Houston elayed, their hotel reservations iven away, and then having to ress for the game in an old na- r al air force base near the The Bucs snatched the inals championship from South an Antonio in two games , one -2 win and the other a 13-3 vic ory, before losing 5-2 in the tate semi-finals to Baytown terling. The state championship- hen went to Spring High school. Varsity baseball individuals ere successful as well as the eam. Shortstop Bobby as named 4A State All-Tourna ent Shortstop, All-District ost Valuable Player, and All- istrict Shortstop. Brian Miles nd John jones were chosen All- istrict pitchers, while Mark obinson was an All-District B C hird baseman, and jimmy Ward ook the Honorable Mention as second baseman. Those selected the All-District second team ere Catcher Benny Dunn, Out- 'elders Steve Linder and Mitch ardis, and First Baseman Lon- ie Key.

The sophomore baseball team Won nine out of ten games and won their district title. Two nohitters were pitched, one by Reg Aplin and the other by Poke Williams. The top hitters were sophomore Tommy Rhame, batting .500, and freshman Scott Funk, batting .600. jeff Smith hit the only home run of the season. The junior varsity finished their sea- son with ten wins and eleven loses with a shut out against Port Lavaca Calhoun.
