For the first time in 15 years rain disturbed gradua- tion. liuckily, however, none ofthe graduates or their friends and relatives got wet, thanks to the good old neountry nosew of Dr. Bourgeois, not to mention a little thunder and lighten- ing. Things were set up at Hopper Field, and the speakers had begun, but the rains that had plagaied the last few weeks of school came again. Before the first drop fell all the graduates, spectators, band members, and equipment had moved to the sanctuary of the auditorium. When things were set up inside, the ceremony began again Class Speaker, Craner Ford, spoke urging his classmates to go on and make something of their lives. Guest speak- er, lVlrs. June Hyer, vice-president of academics for the University of Texas at San Antonio, gave a great speech addressing the 372 graduates, and never once facing the spectators. During the homecoming rally, a mock contest was held when boys tried out for Homecoming Queen with girls in men's suits as their escorts. The presence of the Shipmates in red dresses and white gloves also added to the spirit. The several different hand routines were enjoyed by all. STUDENT LIFE-35 EXFQRT EL! Art Welcomed changes for the Art Depart- ment this year were more space and new equipment which allowed great expansion to the program. The equip- ment additions ineluded a press, an air brush, and silk screen paraphernalia. Drawing, painting and design were the main points stressed in the curriculum. Amateur art students sold samples of their work at a weekly flea market in Freeport, and the department had six County Fair winners. Other activities included entering the Spring Art Festi- val in Houston, and an art show and poster contest sponsored hy the local Art League. Art students also did hack drops and posters for the Music and Drama Department presentations. 38-ACADEMICS FACING PAGE: ftopj Diana Garcia and Irma Hernandez work on the Honor Board designed by Bobby Bass. fbottomj Award winner Susan Elkins works hard in class. This new idea took time, but proved effective. Mrs. Jane Pitkin, a new English teacher at BHS, began her teaching year by trying to develop group participation to give each class a sense of unity. The group provided great enter- tainment for many school functions, as well as outside affairs. ln spring, the group attended two jazz festivals. One was in Beaumont and the other in Wharton at WCJC, ln February they did good will concerts in West Colum- bia and Alvin. As a final activity, they took a four day tour with the Sym- phonic Band in central Texas. The String Ensemble was a seven member group which will form the neucleus of a full orchestra program for next year. The ensemble played for both school open house nights and entered UlL Contests in March. Their trip for the year was to Corpus Christi, where they combined as a unit with the Festival Orchestra of the American String Teachers Association. I ACADEMICS-47 I ,ooo Marching Band The BHS marchers were very busy in the fall and winter. They put together many fine half time shows. A Black Light Spectacular was done at the Brazosport-St. Thomas game which featured the drill team, the twirlers, and the drum section in three differ- ent songs, after a drill hy the band. At the Brazosport-Brazoswood game, the bands and drill teams from both schools comhined to present a Patriot- ic Show. Formations of different American emblems were performed. After many weeks of hard work, the band went to marching contest and made a First Division rating despite freezing rain and blowing wind. 48-ACADEMICS THIS PAGE: ftopj The BHS Band plays for a Friday football pep rally. fabovej Com- bined band, choir, orchestra, and drill team put together a beautiful patriotic formation for the half time show of the Brazoswood game. The hardest part of the course was work with the wheel to form a clay vessel. ln the jewelry course, students were exposed to in- teresting silver soldering, gold and silver electroplating, centrifugal cast- ing, and vacuum casting. ln the last method, molten metal is pulled into a mold by a vacuum. Works with lea- ther consisted ol' making things such as sandals. Une very successful method was the casting ol' jewelry in 14k gold. FHA The Future Homemakers of America involved themselves in many projects this year, some for the community and some for the club. Many of the activities were done in conjunction with the FFA. Two of these were a hayride and weiner roast, and the Brazoria County FFA-FHA Youth Fair. At the April fair the girls exhibited articles of clothing and baked goods for judging. As a service project, the two groups collected over 200 stamped Christmas cards which were sent to the State Hospital at Rusk. These cards were for the use of the patients there. Throughout the year they did such things as help Santa Claus with his appearances at various business locations, and serve at the FFA, Football, and DE banquets. ln January they provided the Velasco PTA with baby sitters and in February they gave Freeport lntermediate eighth grade girls a tour and introduction of the Homemaking Department. March 19-25 was National FHA Week, during which degrees were completed and refreshments were served for the teachers in the lounges. ACADEMICS-7 l Agricultural studies This three year program with 511- stud- ents enrolled this year offered agri- cultural learning as an avoeation as well as a vocation. Four girls took the eourse in this second year that girls had enrolled. Next year the course can he taken by ninth graders. The elub eonneeted with the course is FFA Chapter 323 founded in l950. lN'lem- hers entered the County Fair and the Houston Fatstoek Show with animals and in judging contests. ln Nlay they held the annual rodeo whieh financed equipment and judging contests. Around 50 percent of the agriculture students attend college and study related fields. Most others go to work on a ranch or farm for themselves or someone else. 72-ACADEMICS MAY 4 sag: 'R TX an I T e I .x A Ii 1 .2 .V A 5, It 2 so f I I FACING PAGF: ftopj FFA officers fl to rj Ii. Using the six basic mac- hine tools. they made machines. They could make a machine gun or a sewing machine if they wanted to. This BHS department has trained some of the best machinists in the area. This line of work offers great opportunities which aren't being used by enough students. Dow, lVlallay Repair, McGill Specialty Machine Shop, and Brown and Root are among the many firms employing hundreds of machinists in this area. For the young men follow- ing through with this training, an aver- age yearly income of 320,000 can be earned. 74-ACADEMICS F Welding Arc gas, heli-are, hand torch cutting, and sand blasting were just some of the skills learned this year by vocation- al welders. The final total of young men taking the course was 2l. The future can hold much for those stu- dents who want to put their welding experience to good use. This training which is supplied at great cost enables some to attend ajunior college and take welding technician eourses. Those who work hard can make fine careers for themselves. Next year, the first BHS auto mechanic to gradu- ate from technical school will go to work for General Motors in Michigan at a nice salary.
