Following a story in their readers which centered around friends sleeping over and bringing teddy bears, the first graders brought their own teddy bears to school and cuddled them during reading time. English time was spent writing teddy bear stories. Finger plays and art activities centered on teddy bears. A special guest, Diane Combs, brought puppet Arcille to the first grade room for story time. Arcille, with the help of the first grade students, told the story of THE LITTLE RED HEN. Much playacting has been going on in first grade. We acted out ma th equations and stories from the readers. Something new to first grade this year was the computer. Each child was able to spend time with the computer. t First graders are hard at work on their mathematics. 49
