I feel that as a coach I muSI be an excellent teacher. We are in the business of teaching oung students how to participate in an orga- nized activity. As a coach we not only have to teach the funda- mental skills of a sport we must also teach other important areas which will help mold a student athIete's future in society. We must deal daily with such issues as responsi- bility, discipline. promptness. hard work, getting along with other people, and learning to accept losing gracefully as well as winning modestly. I feel that nowhere does a young person learn more about the above issues than participating in high school athletics. The coach's job is to help the individual athlete to improve toward hisfher potential. Whether the athlete reaches this po- tential depends on attitude effort and motiva- tion. The self-discipline learned from participat- ing in athletics is very to the athlete's life over- all. It will help himfher in hisfher higher educa- tion and adult life, This is why I think athletics is important.
