Don't get me wrong, it's not all a bed of roses . . . practice can be the pits! Some days Igo home feeling like l'm the worst athlete in the worlds but, then come game time, that feeling of excitement returns and I can never get enough playtime. Sports have always been a part of my life. Starting at the age of five, I began competing through Brawley Swim Team. From there I went on to become involved in volleyball, basketball, softball and many other sports which I tried just for the fun of it. Before that I was just a typical little tomboy following around my older brother and his friends filling in spots in their pick-up games. These childhood games and the en- couragement I received from my parents started me on the road of happiness through sports. Sports do not only bring excitement and enjoyment but in many ways athletics can also be a friend. I can recall many times when all that was keeping me from committing hari-kari was Thursday's game, and when my friends weren't there to listen to my problems, a volleyball doesn't mind being beat on for a little while. Being so involved in sports also kept me out of trouble, which may be why my parents encouraged me so much. It also helped me to find out where I fit in during the confusion of my high school years. Sports also provide the opportunity to get involved and to make a lot of good friends. Basketball was the sport which gave me the chance to know and love one very special girl - Toni Sullivan. She's gone now but at one time we were two of a kind on and off of the court. Together we terrorized other teams, argued with referees, and celebrated after good games. She made me realize that even a sport that doesn't top my favorites list can be fun and is worth all the time and effort put in just for the enjoyment of beating the pants off of another team. Its great to share that feeling with friendsl I guess what l'm trying to say is that you're missing out if you aren't involved in sports somehow. Whether it be as an athlete, cheerleader. scorekeeper, or a cheering voice in the stands, the happiness brought by the love of sports is something no one should do without.
