On November 26, 1984, at the Imperial Of- fice of Education the Imperial County Aca- demic Decathlon was held between all Imperi- al Valley High Schools. BUHS placed Qnd overall with 3 first place honors in Mathematics, Science, and Essay. Monisha Choudhury placed lst in the Hon- ors Division in Social Science, Language and Literature, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Essay. Veronica Galarte placed 2nd in the Varsity Division in Science. Theron Hopkins placed 2nd in the Scholastic Division in Fine Arts, Economics, Science, and Essay. Marnie Kimberlin placed 1st in the Scholastic Divi- sion in Social Science and Interview. Hector Macias placed lst in the Honors Division in Mathematics and Science. Stephen Moore placed 2nd in Science in the Varsity Division. The alternates were Ava Chan, Jose Moya, and Karla Smith who all contributed in the team effort. Top Seniors In Finals 0f Mock Tria Brian Alexander, Chon Reyes, Adria McCollum, Robin Chilcot and Juaniya Padilla were all witnesses for the defense except Adria McCollum who was a prosecuting attorney. Robin was rated best defense witness in the county. Right: Tim Asamen and Theron Hopkins ' were looking over their notes just before the trial began. Far right: Cindy Kieffer watched in awe as Tim Asamen prepared her case. This year's GATE Civics students and few selected students from Mrs. Rose's 3rd period CP Civics class participated in a Mock Trial Competition held at the Imperial County Courthouse in El Centro. Theron Hopkins, Tim Asamen, and Marnie Kimerlin were all lawyers for the defendant Cindy Ballard, who was played by Cindy Kieffer. The defendant allegedly hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failed to stop to render aid ffelony hit and runl. The crime was com- pounded by the fact that the defendant had been drinking at a party. The case was an invented one that the Mock Trial compeitiors had to work on. The prosecuting attornies were Matt Boggust, Adria McCollum, Chon Reyesg Theron Hopkins replaced Matt in the finals. The Brawley team won three preliminary trials, then faced Central's A Team in the finals. Although our prosecution won the case in that trial, the team's effort was second in the county. Kirsten and Kim Savrey confer and compare notes. 48 Cycling Club Above: Mr. Miekka gives instruction on cycling club activities, Cy- cling club is made up of a group of energetic students who like to do things outside of school. Mr. Miekka, their instructor, is a highly active person who enjoys riding and can often be seen riding his ten- speed. The Cycling Club often takes trips on their bikes and are a very active club.
