This program, sponsored by the American Legion, takes place every year. It gives boys from all over the state a chance to see how the state and town governments operate. Various elections and assemblies are held during the conference. The boys chosen to represent B.U.H.S. last June were Joe Meyer, Bill Grass, Jim Barton, Grady Vigneau, Scott Perry, Jim Barrett, Ed Tetrault, Kirk Nims, and Mark Ziter. All in all, Boys’ State was an educational experience as well as an enjoyable one for these boys. Each year, after school has been dismissed a group of Junior girls are chosen by the faculty and student body to travel to Montpelier, Vermont, to attend Girls’ State. The five girls chosen in 1972 to represent B.U.H.S. were Ellen Fairchild, Sarah Dewitt, Jane Porter, Robin Larson, and Chris Elwell. These girls were elected as town postman and member of the police forces, town representative, party chairman, and town clerk respectively. The girls found their experiences at Montpelier exciting and rewarding, with many fond memories of new friendships made. 55 56 Model, State Legislature 1972 On April 10, 1972, the Model State Legislature began its busy week under the supervision of Mr. O’Brien. The week consisted of House and Senate meetings, Steering Committee meetings and work- ing on bills. Approximately 220 students from grade 10-12 par- ticipated with Randy Ziter as President of the Senate, and Scott Baldwin as House Chair- man. Patty Druke served as Par- liamentarian, Jane Porter as Sec- retary, Mark Ziter as Legislature Member, and Steve Gardner and Paul Ballow as Chairmen of the Physical Committee. The Steering Committee con- sisted of Liame Murphy as Pres- ident, Bill Lacik, Jan Barber and Scott Perry. The week ended Friday, April 14, with a Joint Session, and Denni Moriseau as guest speaker. All in all, the week turned out to be very successful and rewarding. 58 Junior The charm and splendor of the “Old South” couldn’t have been more beautifully simulated than it was on the evening of May 20, 1972. As entering couples boarded a red, white and blue steamboat, they immediately experienced the spirit of the “Old South”. Leaving the riverboat, couples strolled onto a Southern Terrace, where they danced to the warm, summery music of Leo Daniels’ Band. One could just imagine Pronv the fresh sweet smell of the Magnolia Trees in the Southern night air. At the hour of 10:00, Jenny Lane was crowned queen of the prom and her escort Scott Baldwin, King. These students with their advisor, Mr. Al Lynch, are a liaison between the student body and the administration. The student council helps to organize activities within the school. During the 1972-73 school year the council sponsored many pro- grams. In one of these, the Austine Exchange, the council sponsored activities such as volleyball games and suppers between the two schools. The council organized a tutoring committee, and since then students have tutoring other students in elementary schools as well as in the high school. New curriculum changes have been brought about by the council’s conferring with the administration. In May, the stu- dent council sponsored a rock concert with “Jeremy” and another con- cert with the “Tracks”, and presented an assembly with speaker Leo- nard Smith for World Unity Day. Peter Rogers, one of the council members, was elected vice president of the Vermont Association of Student Councils and went to the national conference in Chicago. Jane Porter, secretary, was elected dis- trict representative. This years officers are Scott Perry, president; Paul Ballou, vice presi- dent; Jane Porter, secretary; and Donna Baldwin, treasurer. Not only does the new addition have carpeted hall- ways and spacious classrooms, but it also is equip- ped with larger woodshops and auto mechanic areas, a horticulture center and various print shops. The main attraction of the new vocational building is the learning center which includes meeting rooms, conference areas and one complete library. 83 84 і 1 Е -- { He з! = | [ | | | Fa 85 pÅ- раны = KEE IE. - SAT lI. This is done by exposing ourselves to the knowledge and opportunities offered. It is unfortunate that because of a basic fear not one of us has utilized even a small percentage of the total available growth expe- rience. Not one of us has built the potential we are capable of building. This fear that has held us back, the fear of fail- ure, is the product of over-emphases placed on comparisons between us and our peers. Since child- hood we have been continously subjected to these comparisons. Consequently, we tend to shy away from new ventures out of fear of being measured against others who are already proficient or more adept in these fields. This want of confidence has troubled us in the past. If we recognize it and deal with it, however, it will not stop our growth in the future. We must realize that we cannot all do everything equally well, that there will always be those who excel in ‚any particular area. At the same time, we cannot let this realization keep us from attempting new under- takings. Without fear of failure, we should explore new fields that will present a challenge, for only through accepting challenges can we grow. If we do not let the knowledge that there are others who may surpass us prevent our probing new realms, we will find in ourselves a wide range of previously untapped talents. Only by shedding this fear of comparison can we mature to our fullest capabilities. It is a challenge we all face. If we overcome this challenge, we will lose the inhibitions and uncertainties that have hindered our development, and we will grow to confident, successful adults. As members of the Class of 73 we accept this challenge. Voted into the offices were Joe Hill, President; Donna Baldwin, Vice Presi- dent, Sheila Cutler, Secretary; Trixie Wessel, Treasurer; and Chris Chapman, Advisory Council Representative. For a second year, Mr. Sherk accepted the position as Junior Class Advisor. At the first class meeting the Juniors decided to have a prom. Also Discussed were fund raising projects. The Juniors kept busy selling soda at basketball games, mounting deer heads, and having a slave day for the community. 146 This year’s sophomore class is led by Vicki Derosia, president; Mike Elliot, vice president; Tina Goldsmith, secretary; Randy Young, Treasurer; and Lee Webster, Advisory Council Rep- resentative. The class started out the year with a bake sale, and also spon- sored a turkey raffle. The money raised in these and other pro- jects went towards a rock con- cert, put on near the end of the year. Getting off to a good start, the sophomores look forward to their next two years as upper classmen. Murphy and Мг. Sherk, We the class of 1973 feel greatly honored to be able to dedicate our yearbook to you. We did so for many reasons, which, although they may seem ordinary by themselves, are rarely found combined as in the two of you. Both of you sacrificed many nights supervising our money-rais- ing projects and helping us in our times of crisis, transporting us to various places and being our one- man clean-up committees. Known to us as John Patrick Arthur Murphy and Ken (Shriek) Sherk, you have helped us tremen- dously in accepting the responsibil- ities of a class at Brattleboro Union High School. We hereby dedicate this year- book to you who in turn have dedi- cated many hours of hard work and sincerity to many people. Sincerely, The Class of ’73 Мг. John Murphy, teacher of social studies, came to Brattleboro in the fall of 1969. He is a graduate of Plymouth State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Edu- cation and is currently attending Keene State College. Mr. Murphy has staged the Junior High Student Council Elections and is very interested in developing a law course, making use of the police station, the court and various other resources within the community. With the help of Mr. Stephen Hall, he is developing a court procedure unit to be taught in the 1973-74 school year. Mr. Kenneth Sherk teaches chemistry and biology here in Brattleboro. He was graduated from the University of Massa- chusetts with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master’s Degree in Sci- ence. Last year he permanently joined the faculty after substituting for one semester in the science department. Being musically inclined, he gives bas- soon lessons and has participated in the musicals. This year he was in the orches- tra for “Fiddler on the Roof” and last year he employed some of his other tal- ents to help with the electrical work on “The Crucible.” Mr. Sherk also devotes his time to other activities including the Ecology group, the Bridge Club and Glass Recycling. 16€ 168 EEE EE Е И... : 4 ъа ar 2 N г ШИШИЙ ise lirio u Term НИЯ 7 P ШЫП UR, kart dett EL EE ЫШЫ cr el ud H Е H TRER і ae y E НЫЧЫ, аи —— nah ығы ЕДГ, if ШШЕН : E ши ЕДШ ЕНЕН wi E сс SC GE БЕБЕ и SE Arca ы; AES ШШ ПИСЕ tere SE EE — 1 N ین‎ НЫШ pum SINUS ШИ.
