he Unsung Heroes 0 o . C 3 .49 n l Q.. E E. ho are the people that sponsor the activi- ties, make sure the sport teams have coaches, and see that the students become well educated? Well its none other than the Brashear Teaching and Administration Staff. Though they are not as well known as the stars of a team or a play, they work just as hard to see that the final performance is the finest. They spend hours in school giving their all so that the knowledge they have acquired is passed on. They also spend hours after school making sure the activities run smooth and that the students enjoy their extra-cirricular activities. They receive very little credit for the enormous job they do and are usually ones to receive the blame if something goes wrong. So, to these wonderful people, we say a special thanks for making our years at John A. Brashear our finest. 176

This Halloween many children did not go out. Many stayed home and had parties. There was candy being poisoned, pills put in place of candy, and many worried parents. Many worried parents es- corted their children around their neighbor- hood. Because of the Ty- lenol scare also going on, this made parents even more worried. Many sta- tions were set up to check through the children,s can- dy. The scare was that this year there would be more tricks than treats. Three Rivers Stadium gets some repairs. After a long time in need of repairs, Three Rivers Stadium is finally getting them. Many changes will be taking place at the stadium. The main change is that it will have a new field. This can be beneficial to the many games played there. There will also be benefits for the fans. These include new seats, and a new scoreboard. Tv monitors will also be placed in the stadium for such things as instant replays. With some luck our teams can start off new along with the new stadium. We look forward to seeing these changes soon! Incline Undergoes Renovation The Duquesne Incline is getting a new look. This incline has served two main functions in the years it's been open. The first is a good transportation from Mount Washington into downtown. Many people relied on the incline for their everyday transportation. It's second purpose is the fact that it is a historical landmark. Beside being useful to the city, it is something for visitors in our area to admire. But, being a landmark, age, along with many different types of weather have taken their roll on the incline. It happened this year in Brashear, Mr. Cichra takes Dr. Johnson's place . . . Cheerleaders win cheer-off . . . Mr. Burrows runs for teacher of the year . . . We are the football champions seven teachers go on sabbaticals . . . ruling to take out accumulative grades goes through . . . Westinghouse sponsors a student to live abroad . . . Freshman Steering Com- mittee organizes . . . Mr. Tarasovic becomes assis- tant dean Mr. Wil- liams takes Dr. Kmetz' place. Pittsburgh is hit hard by inflation. Besides food prices rising, many other rates are too. Port Author- ity transit raised their rates to 551.00 from 5.75. The transfers now cost 8.25. These price hikes helped PAT handle inflation. Bell Telephone also changed their rates. Their customers now have the option of buying their phones or renting them. They also pay a fee for just having each phone. With rising unemploy- ment and laid-off Steel- workers the effect of such hikes are felt harshly. Brashear Is First Again Brashear has played a major role in many pilot programs. We were first to test the Monitoring Achievement in Pittsburgh QMAPJ program. This program was designed to help students improve in many basic skills areas such as com- position, math, and language. Another first for Brashear came to two psychology classes. These classes took a course called Applied Economics. This program was run similar to a Junior Achievement Company. They spend the third report selling stock, making and selling their product and coming up with a profit or loss for their company. They spent the next nine weeks playing management games which also gave them hands-on experience on a computer ter- minal. Both of these projects have seemed to be successful. The students have seemed to profit from them.
