Numerous applications were filed and after a board of selectors narrowed out the candidates, Ken Balaski, was chosen to represent Brashear. After being chosen, Ken had to send in a lengthy application to AFS fAmerican Field Servicej. He then had a long wait before he found out that he was being sent to Istanbul, Turkey. He admitted being scared yet interested in visiting such a place. Mr. Khorey and the Brashear staff helped Ken immensely as he prepared for his departure. Finally, the day came Ken caught a plane to New York fhis first plane ridej where he was joined by other AFS students going to such places as France and Switzerland. They all stayed the night at C. W. Post College on Long Island where they became friends. The next day, I 18 voyagers crowded abroad a Yugoslavian air- plane. They were relieved when they reached Yogoslavia but they were forced to wait eight hours for the connecting flight to Istanbul. They arrived in Istanbul at midnight and imme- diately went to an orientation camp where they stayed 3 days. The people at the orientation camp explained the difficulties they would en- counter and offered suggestions on how to avoid them. Finally, Ken met the family he was to live with during his stay. His family consisted of a grandmother, a mother, and a brother. Imagine Ken's surprise when he discovered that his brother's nickname was Barby. The family lived in an apartment, Ken and his family adjusted quickly to each other. During his stay Ken spent his time swimming, boating, eating, and touring. Near the end of his stay Ken went to visit other Turkish relatives in Denizli, a small picturesque town. There he swam in pools of hot mineral water of many colors fed from underground hot springs, visited ancient ruins, and had a turkish bath which he described in one word, Hhotll' He hated to leave but he was happy when he finally returned home to the United States. N-. Patty Tallon listens attentively at a Council meeting. he member of Student Council are elected from all Social Studies classes, which means that every grade is repre- sented. This select group must attend the meet- ings where they learn the basic governmental procedures. They are also responsible for report- ing the council's progression to their fellow class- mates and they partake in the planning of var- ious activities. The sponsor this year is Mrs. Pat English, who is also Brashear's Activities Direc- tor. This is her first year of being the sponsor. She took over the position which was formerly held by Mrs. Frances May Burke. She is doing a good job of organizing the various activities in which the Student Council is involved. They have tried to brighten up the school by painting the garbage cans and decorating the school for the Fall Festival. This year, they held a food drive where students brought in canned and boxed goods and donated money for the needy families of Brashear. The money was used to buy turkeys. This successful drive helped to feed six families a nutritious Thanksgiving dinner. They also are responsible for holding the holiday dances, The Spring Fling, and they run and operate B.I.C. fBrashear Information Center, several days a week, where you are able to buy school supplies, candy, and on certain mornings, you can purchase donuts. The money that is raised goes toward student activities and every- one appreciates all their hard work and dedica- tion. I0
