The Senior Superlatives extend a special thanks to Ms. Tinkham at the Jekyll Island Authority for allowing the use of Crane Cottage in their portraits. Sr. Class President Serving as the President of the Senior Class of 1988 has been an honor. Being able to share in the involvement of our class activities was a priviledge. Our class, even though we are small, has been a part of many memories, good and bad. The friendships and experiences we have encountered will last forever. As we end our final year of a separate part of our life, we will all remember our friends, teachers and most of all our friendships and memories that couldn’t be felt by anyone else than a member of the Brantley County High School Class of 1988. She is dedicated to BCHS and is well liked by her peers. Kelly is a role model Senior. He has involved him- self in sports and clubs alike. He is sensitive to the needs of his peers. The student body respects Kelly and he has many friends. SUSAN I® LEE § pit KELLY ROWELL w 50 Superlatives BEST ALL AROUND BRIAN HENDRIX LORA HERNDON Every class has a guy that is outgoing, friendly, and able to get along in almost any situation. This year’s class has Bri- an. His dependabil- ity, friendliness, and loyalty to friends does not go unno- ticed. Classmates as well as teammates look to Brian as a friend. Lora has a posi- tive attitude, is very spirited, and down to earth. Her academic achievement and willingness to help others has in- spired many friends and fellow students. She is respected by those who know her. Superlatives 51 MOST INTELLECTUAL Ronda Jo does not spend all of her time studying, although she does love to read. She has many friends and enjoys life to the fullest. Her dedication to get- ting the most out of her education will take her far in life. Intellectual is the first word to come to one’s mind after hearing Leslie’s name. He is known for his high nationally ranked intelli- gence test scores and excellent grades. But Leslie is not all brains; he is a very friendly person who is easy to get along with. RONDA JO ALTMAN § LESLIE YOUMANS 52 Superlatives MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED GREG JACOBS § TERRI THRIFT Greg’s life is al- ready a success. He is a straight A stu- dent and a whiz on the basketball court. One can’t help but think about all the millions he is surely destined to make in the future. Success is something that Terri always strives for and usually gets. This determination will help her reach many goals in the future. Her life and career is cer- tain to be reward- ing. Superlatives 53 BEST DRESSED Who is always up on what’s new in the fashion world, fabu- lously dressed whether it is casual or formal? Melinda Lee. What else would one think of when she walks past be- sides style”? Michael pos- sesses the ability to follow the cur- rent fashion, yet retain his own style. He adds an air of distinction to the halls of BCHS. Michael definitely knows how to dress for success. MELINDA LEE MICHAEL MILLWOOD BEST LOOKING WADE GRIFFIN § ERIKA WILSON When Wade walks past, all the girls think WOW”. His easy smile and irre- sistible charm at- tract a lot of atten- tion. Wade’s pa- tience, under- standing, and easy- going attitude are also attractive vir- tues. Beauty is only skin deep”, or so the saying goes. But Erika pos- sesses many quali- ties that make her beautiful inside too. Her calm ap- proach to life and pleasant attitude only serve to en- hance her appear- ance. Superlatives 55 MOST SPIRITED Michelle exerts much spirit as a BCHS cheerleader. She encourages many to cheer the Herons to victory. Michelle’s animated loyalty to the Herons makes her an asset to the team. Brian is always full of Heron spirit whether on the football field, at pep rallies, or in the halls of BCHS. His enthusiasm helps other stu- dents become ex- cited about school and Heron victo- ries. MICHELLE COLEMAN BRIAN O’NEAL 56 Superlatives MOST DEPENDABLE MELISSA COLEMAN % MICHAEL HARRELL When someone needs a helping hand, Melissa is there to provide it. She devotes her time and energy to help- ing others. People admire her reliability and consider her a true friend. Michael is al- ways willing to give his time to others. If there is work to do, he can be counted on to help out. Michael’s friends respect him because he is so dependable. Superlatives 57 BEST PERSONALITY Danny’s cherubic face and seemingly innocent smile make him appear shy. After getting to know him, it’s inevi- table that one has a true friend in Danny. Smiling and feeling good comes naturally to Robin. Her bubbly personality is con- tagious. After chatting with Rob- in one always walks off smiling and feeling great. DANNY HERRIN § ROBIN JONES 58 Superlatives WITTIEST CLAUDE COBB HEIDI WOODS Claude’s sense of humor has made many people laugh. He can make even the most depressing situation seem fun- ny. Claude’s quick wit has provided him with many friends here at BCHS. You’ve probably heard the latest joke via Heidi. She is such a comic that it is hard to take her seriously. But people love her and look to her to make them laugh. Superlatlves 59 MOST ATHLETIC TRAVIS PAGE S REBECCA ROWELL Sports and Travis are synonymous. Travis's dedication to the Herons is proven time and time again, when he is seen participating in football, basket- ball, baseball, track, and other sports. His athletic talent has led his team to sev- eral victories. Travis has definitely been an asset to the BCHS athletic department. Rebecca is not- ed for her suc- cessful participa- tion in sports and academics. Rebec- ca is a born leader on and off the courts and fields. She has inspired teammates as well as classmates with her endless dedi- cation and energy. MOST TALENTED JENNIFER MOODY § ERIC ROWELL Jennifer is defi- nitely talented, but those talents are boundless. She ex- cels in music, dance, public relations, cre- ative art, etc. . . . Jennifer’s life has been a success so far; one wonders how rich her future will be. After hearing Eric play the drums or guitar, one wonders how long it will be be- fore his name is in lights. They participated in the hall decorat- ing contest and although they didn't win, they proved that their spirit lasted year round. Will you be rich? Will you see the world or will you be stuck here in Brantley Co.? Is college or tech school what you want to do? Questions of the future are now rising up in sophomores. Setting goals and reaching them is what growing up is all about. Making mistakes and learning from them. But here's the big- gest question ... Will I be a bum? We asked four sophomores opinion on what the future will be ... They all agreed that college was defi- nite after high school, so we asked them what college they were interested in. Christy Jo Williams wants to further her education in music and is consider- ing Troy State University as her college. Jim Miller wants to go to the Univer- sity of Georgia, get rich and buy a Lam- borgini. Catherine Moody plans to go somewhere away from Brantley Co. and become a doctor or go into the business field. Deon Horne says that he wants a job that he'll enjoy, and hopes to go to the University of Georgia. When these four were asked if they were going to be a bum their response was this ... No way said Christy Jo. Only if college gets too expensive, then I'll have to work in a chicken house. - Jim Miller Deon Horne gave a simple NO! And Catherine Moody commented, No, I think everyone needs to do their own part in this world. This group of sophomores plan to build their future, what will you do? Think about it. They tell us how well we know a particular subject and in some cases how much more we should study. During the sophomore year a test is given to all tenth graders. And in or- der to graduate they must first pass this test. The Basic Skills Test (or BST) is de- signed to let you and the teachers know that, Hey, we sophomores know our ba- sics. O.K., maybe a little bit more, any- way we found some of you sophomores wandering around with your strained brain and asked you a few questions. Ivan Griffin, a continuous honor roll student, felt the BST was easy. We asked him if he was an above average aver- age or below average, student and here's what he had to say. My grades show that I am above average, but I think I'm just as average as the next guy. Andee Courson feels that, everyone should know the basics to everything before they graduate, that's why we go to school. Dana Moore considers herself as an average student, so we asked her what she thought about the BST. She said that, parts of it were hard, but most of it was easy. Shelby Rawlins felt that, if you can't pass a test, then you couldn't pass a class. She gave the future of the BST a big YES! The BST will be good now and in the future to come, Rodney Maefield add- ed. The sophomores seemed positive about the Basic Skills Test and feel that all should have to take the BST and pass it in order to graduate. Now weeks after the test the tenth graders seem to be back to normal, and now they're learn- ing more than the basics. neyH U°ta 94 Sophomores Sophomores 95 Jsna H °0re Sue °°te Unnis orga° °bh ! e p v 'etty 96 Sophomores jimmy R,dd'e ?a seS Ps0n 0eWa Rh°den UoraRo 6 Sophomores 97 Once I was Scum! Those things are re- membered by the sophomores as they look back on their freshman year. We asked certain individuals about being a freshman, how glad they were to be a sophomore, what was the worst thing that happened during their ninth year of school and some advice to future freshman. Tripp Herrin remembers when he was put into trash cans, backed up into the equipment room and when re- leased, he was beaten up. Travis Flowers enjoys being a sopho- more because, it's another year closer to graduation. I've gotten my drivers license and I ain't Scum no more! says Laura Martain proudly when we asked her about be- ing a sophomore. Laura Rowell said that her freshman year was, Fun, but boring at the same time. I learned that high school wasn't as great as I expected. She must have been expecting a miracle. Lynne Driggers leaves advice to the future freshman ... try to survive. If anyone gives you trouble, go out of your way to avoid them! Being a freshman you're called Scum! CHEERLEADERS 142 Clubs Coach - Cynthia McNeil Coach - Barbra Maefield Being a cheerleader takes a lot of work and does not come over night. Besides learning stunts, cheers, and dances, we spent our summer months raising money to purchase new uniforms. After tryouts we. the new BCHS cheerleaders attended a private cheerleading camp under the instruction of Neely Griffin, a Georgia College cheerleader. The beginning of a new school year brought excitement and a lot of hard competition to prepare for. The team went to the Okefenokee Cheerleading Competition and scored high in individual and squad. Our next goal was to get our school and team excited at the pep rallies. Soon after it seemed like there was no time to rest because basketball season was in. With games on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday we hardly had time to study, but one requirement is to be an above average student. We also treated our Basketball players by giving them ''goodies” for their special effort. Our sponsors have been really supportive and they have worked hard getting our uniforms ready. We appreciate the free time they’ve given up and everything they’ve done for us. They and the school have made this the Best year for the BCHS cheerleaders. New Head Coach Stan Shepherd had many concerns. He showed the Seniors as well as everyone else how important they would be, and things would be different than that of the past. He also stressed that practices were to go over game plans and conditioning the team. Coach Shepherd came to Brantley Co. without knowing anything about the Heron foot- ball team, as well as other oppo- nents. He was concerned with how our team would react in a game situation. He found out that the Herons would not give up to the sounding buzzer. Coach said that there were three keys to winning. Defense was a very big factor on our team. The Heron Defense only al- lowed 124 points to be scored on them the whole season. Another key was a balanced offense. The Heron Offense was very bal- anced both running and throw- ing. The team had 1042 running and 1398 passing. The last key was conditioning. The Herons ran RALPH” everyday. We all found that in the end it would help us win the tight games. Coach Shepherd stressed the importance of the Seniors provid- ing leadership. Whatever he asked was done with no ques- tions asked. Along with their lead- ership, this years Seniors really wanted to win and that is one of Coach Shepherds biggest con- cerns for next year. 146 Sports Danny Herrin Clifford Drury Senior Herons 1988 Kelly Rowell Brian Hendrix Michael Harrell Claude Cobb James Chaney Travis Page Brian O'Neal Football 147 JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Pictured on bottom L-R: Jamie Waldron, Anthony Harper, Jerry Moore, Chris Harper, Travis Hall, Aaron Strickland, Daniel Rainge, Middle L-R: Ken Clark, Dwayne Johns, Deon Horne, Nathan Herrin, Clifford Drury, Damon Flowers, David Lewis, Top L-R: Bert Smith, Wade Drury, Matt Stephens, Michael Popwell, Kevin Davison, Travis Flowers, David Butler This years' Junior Varsity Her- ons proved their strength game after game against each opponent. I had no idea what to expect from my team or our opponents. The first half of the season was a pleasant surprise with an 8-1 record in the first 9 games, but we got a scare by losing the following three games. We broke out of this slump by going on a 14-ga- me winning streak, only to be stopped and finish the se- ason to Swainsboro in the region tournament. I'm very proud of the accomplishments by the young men on the boys' basketball team. Not only did they win the Quad-Region Championship, but also showed great character in coming from a 13-point deficit against Berri- en to win the Sub-Region Championship. Other achieve- ments were an undefeated home record, best record ever at Brantley Co., a 20+ winning season, and set a high standard of character for future Herons. The council has undergone a vast overhaul on how we operate over the past year. There has been a lot of work involved in making 1987-88 a success for me, but none of it would have been possible without the under- standing and support of my parents. I hope I can carry the leadership I’ve learned into the rest of my life. I sincerely hope next years president will continue the growth that’s occurred this year, and may he or she take as much pride in being Student Council president as I did. This year the Student Council had various ideas to keep the school going. Before the school year started, the S.C. Senate appeared before the Board of Education to propose a change in the dress code; happily the Board approved the proposal. The Student Council dedicated 1987-88 to boost- ing school spirit. Everyone got involved. Members of the SC encouraged their class members to sponsor pep rallies. The Seniors killed the Gators while the Juniors danced to the Bird” with the Big WWUF. SC members sold spirit hands, pompoms, and on board signs so everyone could demos- trate their school spirit. Homecoming week was an especially busy one for the SC. For the first time in many years, SC sponsored this event. Along with FBLA, SC spon- sored a hall-decorating contest. Other activities in- cluded dress-up days and a semi-formal dance. During the Christmas season, a door-decorating contest was sponsored allowing each homeroom to tell their own Winter Story”. Some of the entries are pictured at the bottom of this page. The winner, Mrs. Bullard’s homeroom, is pictured at the far right. The Student Council participated in several pro- jects this year; the state GASC project Gracewood and GASC statewide Voter registration drive were only the beginning. On the local level the SC joined Arrive Alive America by urging students and others to take the pledge not to drink and drive. To show that the pledge was taken, color bandits were worn by all participants. Hearing the desire of the student body to improve the lunch menus. SC officers met with Ms. Braziel and made several suggestions. This year has been a busy one for the SC. One filled with fun and involvement. BCHS BAND DRUM MAJOR Jennifer A. Moody To sum up this year as being drum major for our “Awesome” Heron band the words excitement, nervous, hot tired, and relief can be used. Excitement was when we went to Marching contest and our band, drum major, flag corps drum line made superior ratings. Nervous was me at the first football game, but the band stood behind me and the home crowd loved our show. Hot tired was what we all were after weeks of summer after-school prac- tice. A big sigh of relief is given by me as I look back and see that we, the Brantley Co. Heron Band, made it through a successful year. And finally a big “thanks” to my family, the band directors, my band buddies, and our supportive community. Memories of being your 87-88 Drum Major will never be forgotten. Without Superior band direc- tors we wouldn’t have a superi- or band. For three years Scott and Patricia Bozeman have spent hours of their after- school time to teach our band new marching routines and mu- sic. Before coming to Brantley Co. the Bozemans taught in many counties. Scott Bozeman received his BME from Troy State Univ. and has taught for eight years. Patricia Bozeman received her BME in 1974 and her MME in 1980 from Troy State Univ., and has taught for fourteen years. Their time, pa- tience, and dedication has built our band up to what it is and is to be in the future. Officers from all the bands were assembled on the field to receive trophies and plaques after their ratings were given. Judges score the bands on marching, style of music, flag corps, drum line, and drum major. Tension rose and breathes were held as we heard the news we had long awaited. Drum Major—I, Drum Line—I, Flag Corps—I and Band—II. Disappointment fell, but only for a while. When returning to the school an error was found in the scoring and the band received an all-around rat- ing of I. A superior rating for the “Awesome” Heron Band. Hard work, pat and dedication payed off. Christmas Specials In addition to playing at football games the Brantley Co. band participates in many other activities. The Christ- mas Parade in Nahunta is lead off by the band every year. Playing Christmas tunes and filling the people with holiday spirit is what the band did this year. Later on in the week the Band and Chorus performed a concert for the community. Songs of excitement such as Little Drummer Boy, Chestnust Roasting on an Open Fire and European Christmas were played to continue the Christmas celebration. The Brantley Co. Band is a very important asset to our school and county. Epcot Excitement May 16, 1987 was a day of excitement. We loaded the buses early that morning and traveled, to what seemed like forever, to arrive at Disney’s Epcot Center. The Brantly Co. Band was invited to be the guest at Epcot and to march in the parade. People lined the pathway to listen and some even followed the band as they made their way through foreign countries. At the end of the parade the band was dismissed for a free day in Epcot. The warm sun burned our bodies but friends and fun made us soon forget that. 188 Clubs you Clubs 189 BCHS Chorus Al Fullard Toni Smith Jerry Myers Tina Thrift James Page Renee Menden Laretta Davison Charis Woodall Gretchen Drury Angel Bunkley Amy Ulery Stephanie Windham Cheree Lee Em i r+ 1- || SO 7 i Pr 'I X. ■ w .a My O '] • I - T, V r 1 . n- l-'V.g ii 6 A z ——b E?EEiSiiE — i Choral Director: Mrs. Marie Boyett. The experience was one which BCHS students will remember for a long time to come—over and out. 192 HOBY HONORS The Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation (HOBY) exists to help motivate, train and reward these future leaders, preparing them for leadership positions in their schools and developing the talents that will serve them in the future. Since 1958, HOBY has conducted leadership seminars for high school sophomores at no cost to the student or to the school. The format is simple. Bring together a select group of high school sophomores with demonstrated leadership qualities and a group of distinguished leaders in business, education, government and the professions. Through intense but informal discussions, let the two interact. The young people get a realistic look at what makes America great and a better understanding of our nation’s role in the world community. The nominees from B.C.H.S. were Shelby Rawlins, Jodie Jacobs, Deon Home, Brian McLeod, Brian Moody, Jimmy Riddle, Ivan Griffin, Andee Courson, and Donald Miller. Congratulations! Not only were they glad to get out of class, but they learned that Mr. Fowler wanted us to do the best possible job at school, avoid drugs, not dropping out and getting a job. Although he would not reveal his Presidential favorites, he promised if elected President he would come speak to us again. This was one day that will not be forgotten by the Brantley County High students and the community. 230 Closing were rhe They placed rhe corpse and rhe resr of rhe remains of rhe cars inro rhe small black casker. Rather than just throw in a few pictures, we wanted to record some of the special times that occur in our lives at high school. This year's staff has been very creative and innovative, and we hope that you will enjoy the changes that were made. Although you may not have taken time to read the articles yet, we feel that you will find them humorous and enlightening. They may, in the future, serve as a link to your high school days. We, the editors and staff, are extremely proud of this book, and we hope you are too. Maybe each one of you will find a picture or article that holds a special memory for you. We have put many long hours in to the completion of this yearbook. Some have worked at school until after dark while others headed to games and practices trying to get the necessary pictures for their layouts. Inductees to the staff were introduced to our organized chaos. They quickly learned to cope with crazy schedules, uncooperative individuals, endless deadlines, and the list goes on. Contrary to popular belief, Publications is not a class to be taken lightly. No one is allowed to goof off. Everyone does his or her share while helping others at the same time. It has been an honor for us to serve as editors of the '88 Heron. We have learned so much about responsibility, team work, and even ourselves. There have been times when we felt like calling it quits because everything seemed to be going wrong. However, we have managed to come out on top. The book you are now reading is the end product of all our frustrations, hard work, concentration, etc. . . . We went to a lot of trouble in producing this yearbook, but we feel It was worth it. As we look back over the year, we feel that it can be described In one word . . .
