Our men may have had one of the toughest uphill battles in years but we overcame the odds and rallied support from the student body and community. The Herons tackled the season headlong. Win- ning two out of the first three games the Herons were well on their way. Then a dry streak set in until the sixth game against Jeff Davis when the Heron’s determination pulled through to defeat the Yellow Jackets for the first time in our school’s history. Two more losses caused the Herons to change their attitudes from being intimidated to becoming the intimidator. Taking the field in front of the home fans at homecoming in Pierce County the Herons became the aggressors. Determined to spoil their home- coming along with the rain the Herons rolled up a 12 to 7 victory over the Bears. After two losses to state ranked teams the Herons finished a respectable season. No doubt the price was high, but well worth it. 104 Football Big 0” Left to Right: 14 Gerald Hall, 74 James Chaney, 55 David Harris, 50 Dean Horne, 76 Greg Cox, 70 Danny Herrin, 52 Curtis Rowell, 11 Pat Evans, 83 Brett McDuffie, 23 Bobby Davis, 24 Travis Page Football 105 MAD DOG D” Left to Right: 24 Travis Page, 70 Danny Herrin, 76 Greg Cox, 74 James Chaney, 14 Gerald Hall, 51 Brian Hendrix, 65 Phil Fulford, 55 Da- vid Harris, 20 Kevin Martin, 32 Curtis Rowell, 23 Bobby Davis WHAT'S DOWN THERE? Although young and inexperienced the JV never gave up and were always in the game when the final horn blew. Togetherness was the main ingredient in this team. They found this ingredient made it easier on those days when the final score was in favor of the other team. The season began with a 14-0 win over Charlton. Then came back to back losses to Ware 26-6 and Pierce 20-8 after two 1-0 forfeit wins over Bacon and Charlton came a 20-8 win over McIntosh. The season ended with a 12-8 loss to Bacon. The 1986-87 Heron boys basketball team enjoyed another suc- cessful season. They posted a fine regular season record of 14-6. The season produced a Christmas tournament championship and the region 2-AA Southeast Championship to end with a 16-7 overall record. This senior oriented ball club was instrumental in carrying on a tradition in boy’s basketball at BCHS. The team won with character, pride, and teamwork. We will always remember this determined group of young men. —Coach Danny McCoy 110 Boy’s Varsity Basketball Boys's Varsity Basketbali lll Standing L-R: Coach T. Among their accomplishments this year was a runner-up finish in the Charlton County Christmas Tournament. These girls overcame much adversity to play competitive ball all season long. By the season's end, there were only nine healthy” ball players dressed out, but these girls made up for their lack of numbers by playing with an added degree of deter- mination and pride, which will never be forgotten. Basketball 113 86J.V. BOYS BASKETBALL 87 The first goal of a junior varsity basket- ball team is not to win, but to prepare young athletes to play at the varsity level. Without a doubt I feel this goal has been accomplished. Pat Evans, Greg Skipper, Landee Hickox, Scott Morgan, Paul Callahan, and Michael Hickox are all sophomores and provide a strong nucleus of experience. I expect each one of these young men to contribute, in their own way, to the Her- ons in the future. The freshmen, David Lewis, Brian McLeod, Donald Miller, Jer- ry Moore, and Trip Herrin, along with their definite athletic ability, have shown an exceeding willingness to work. Be- cause of this, I look forward to their return and a successful season next year. One of my most rewarding experiences at Brantley County High has been the opportunity to work with this dedicated and talented group of young ladies. They knew that if it did not hurt to lose then the winning was not as sweet; therefore, when I expected 100% from them they gave me 110%. These ladies were true winners and always will be!
