Through our many years of school together, we have made and shared some lasting memories. When times were rough and sad, we pulled together to provide a shoulder for someone to cry on and ease the grief. During the dull and drab days, we tried to brighten them in our own special way by making someone smile. Growing up together has been boring and exciting, sorrowful and fun, yet it has all been memorable. As this year ends, we will begin to go our separate ways. Some of us may never cross paths again while some may continue their association throughout life. I urge you to cherish these times, for they may be the fondest of your life. Good luck and best wishe -jln whatever your future might hold. fa SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS WE HAVE LIVED AND LOVED TOGETHER PRESIDENT—Jeff Crews. VICE PRESIDENT—Chris Thomas. SECRE- TARY—Lea King. TREASURER—Rose Griffin We have lived and loved together Through many changing years; We have shared each other's gladness And wept each other’s tears; I have known ne’er a sorrow That was long unsoothed by thee; For thy smiles can make a summer Where darkness else would be. Like the leaves that fall around us In autumn’s fading hours. Are the traitor’s smiles, that darken When the cloud of sorrow lowers; And through many such we’ve known, love. Too prone, alas to range. We both can speak of one love Which time can never change. We have lived and loved together Through many changing years. We have shared each other’s gladness And wept each other’s tears. And let us hope the future. As the past has been will be; I will share with thee my sorrows. And thou thy joys with me. Linda Bell John I. Lee. and Joe Sears. The Man Behind the Scenes Whatever the situation, it seemed he was always blamed. When pep rallies and club meetings were cut. whispers were heard and everyone thought they knew the culprit. He even received the blame for the faulty air-conditioning and leaking roof. But beneath those raised eyebrows and stern smile lies a man who really cares about B.C.H.S. and wants what’s best for the stu- dents. Whenever there was an extra push from behind, he gave the shove. His only wish is that the students set high goals and reach their ambitions. He's our principal. Mr. Melton Callahan. Grace Joiner GA College B.S. Biology UGA M.E.E. His sense of humor and out-going personality is known by the student body as ripples of laughter echo down the otherwise staid or subdued hall. He is the ideal teacher. He is willing to listen to the students’ problems and he cares whether or not the student will pass. He understands the pressure adolescents face and helps them to cope with the difficulties. His ability to have fun while teaching is a quality other teachers can only wish for. He is ideal. People of all kinds possess different qualities, and the students have their own ideas of what an ideal teacher would be. The ideal teacher would ... ... go out of his her way to help the student with any problem. Teach slow enough for some students, yet fast enough for others. ... be a friend to the students and not a tyrant. He would not forget that some students might not be able to grasp a concept as quick- ly as he. He would care about his students. ... be able to remember that he she was once a student too, and show compassion and understanding to their students. ... be able to understand the many different lives of his students and be able to understand their many failures as well as their achievements. ... be able to understand a person's needs, wants, and fears in life so that he can set one on the road to his future. ... be able to have his joking moments and still be respected as he is in his serious moments. He would be witty, charming, and funny and still get the point across. Violet Kane Edinboro Univ. of PA. B.S. Elem. Ed. Pat Neal Valdosta St. B.S. Secondary Ed. He is motivated to study and concerned enough to work to the best of his abilities. He is curious and willing to explore new ideas. He sets goals and strives for the unattainable. He is the ideal student. He has a positive mental attitude towards school and isn’t continuously down-grading the teachers. His charisma and leadership qualities induce others to follow his examples. Although these characteristics are desirable, no one student could possess them all. Having several of these characteristics, a student could be classed as above average. Everyone has their ideas of an ideal student and the teachers have theirs. The ideal student would be ... ... someone who isn’t afraid to dream and pursue that dream. ... someone with an attitude and self-discipline for learning. Someone with the interest, curiosity and willingness to explore new ideas and the patience to repeat those already learned. ... someone who has an unending curiosity about the world around him and is constantly making inquiries. ... one that strives to do his her best at all times, has a good personality and outlook on life, and knows what they want out of life. ... one who is courteous and realizes the value of an education before he graduates, not after. ... one who is conscientious in every form of the word, always a step ahead of others, and always eager to learn just a little bit more. Throughout the course of the year. “Coach P.” achieved the seemingly impossible by uplifting crest fallen and discouraged staff members. He opened up new worlds to us—to dark, untouched areas of our minds. He gave us confidence when we were afraid of tackling new challenges. He believed in us and our abilities even when we didn’t. In dismal situations, his light-heartedness and humor uplifted our spirits and made us see that ’’things” were not as bad as they seemed. For all of these reasons, plus countless more, we extend our eternal gratitude to this special man. Thank you. Coach! Mr. Tom Neal is our representative from Herff Jones. He has worked with us very patiently to compile this yearbook. Without Tom. this yearbook would have been difficult to complete. He has saved us countless dollars on mistakes and problems. He has kept us competitive with other yearbooks around the state. Mary Lee works diligently. 90 Staff Mr. Neal gives us the deadline date. “Today is the deadline. The group was a mixture of individuals that only knew how to play as a team. There were some who said they would be lucky to win a game; however, the ‘survivors’ had different ideas. They began a streak of four wins that had enthusi- asts sitting on the edge of their seats. The next five games seemed to be somewhat detrimental to team spirit, but the ‘survivors faced their last rival with tremendous determination and earned a reward, a victory. Even though a 5-5 record has been achieved before, the ‘survivors set some remarkable firsts. Never before in the history of BCHS, have the Herons defeated Ware or Wayne County, 2AAA competitors. Although blood, sweat and tears were shed, the hard work and dedica- tion proved to make the 1985 football season a true success. The Three Stooges. In foot- ball, this leadership is essential to keep self-confidence, motiva- tion, and ‘spunk' alive through- out the team. As the reality of being a senior is captured by an individual, he realizes that preci- sion team work is needed to make a team ‘click'. The 1985-86 seniors strived to provide the leadership and unified effort, the Herons defeated two AAA teams who had never been de- feated in the history of Brantley County varsity football. FOOTBALL c Coach Donald Altman COACH ALTMAN’S COMMENTS: The Waycross game was the most outstanding game as it was our second year in a row to defeat Waycross. Last year we defeated them in Waycross 26 6. This year at home we defeated them 14-0. This was an exceptional win because I coached Waycross before I came to Brantley County. Brantley scored in the first and third quarters. Brian O’Neal caught a 25 yard pass from Pat Evans. The PAT failed. It was 6- 0, Brantley at the half. Brian O’Neal again scored on a 35 yard run and also scored the 2 point PAT to make it 14-0. The defense, led by Phil Fulford, Greg Cox, and Brian O’Neal, had three goal line stands inside the ten yard line. Twice the Waycross drive was stopped on fumbles, once on an interception. Phil Fulford recovered two fumbles. Brian O’Neal had two interceptions. The whole team played well. The next most outstanding game was the Center Jr. High game. I coached with Coach Saunders at Center Jr. and learned much from him. I had not been able to beat him until this year. Center scored first on a 95 yard run to make the score 6-0. The PAT failed. With 1:38 seconds left in the first half, Brantley started a drive. Brian O’Neal scored on a 2 yard run with only 6 seconds left in the half. The score was 6-6 at half time. With 21 seconds left in the game, Brett McDuffie scored on a 5 yard run to make it 12-6, Brantley. Again the whole team played very well. J.V. Football l 13 HEYHEY!!! The 1985-86 BCHS Cheerleaders had to face many new changes and challenges this year. But to prove that, they tackled each new challenge with much success, they started out the year by winning a spirit stick and being nominated for the Award of Excellence at camp this summer. From there they learned many new cheers, stunts, dances, and pom-pom routines to teach to the student body and fans during both football and basketball seasons. They laughed a little, fussed a little, cried a little, but above all they had fun cheering for the Heron teams. They worked hard, and learned how to combine their indi- vidual skills to benefit the team. The excitement of their first victory rallied the team throughout the entire season. The last-second win over Ware County pro- vided the team with the confidence to uphold the pride of being the first Brantley County team to win ten or more games in four years. The Herons captured second place in the Charlton County High Christmas Tour- nament. In the first round, the Herons once again dominated Ware County to advance to the finals. Although the Herons put up a valiant effort, they fell short of a victory over Camden County in the finals. Two players, Garfield Green and Eric Maefiteld, re- ceived the honor of being chosen for the All-Tourna- ment team. The players were enthusiastic throughout the season and always seemed to have the confidence that they would perform to the best of their ability. The veteran players entrusted experience, while newcomers added raw talent to form a promising team. This was evident in the Ware County game. The Lady Herons were dominant as they defeated the Lady Gators 55-44. The team showed tremendous character throughout the season, even through a few adverse situations. Combining effort, the Lady Herons sacrificed individual pride for the sake of team performance. The team worked hard and enriched their confidence with a loyal bond to one another. Slugger Achievements of the 85-86 Softball team were excelled only by their spirit and determination as they carried high the tradition of Heron pride with a 6-3 Sub-Region record. Sissy Baxley led the dedicated Lady Herons to follow up their spectacular season with a Sub- Region Championship Title. Their tal- ent and sportsmanship also propelled them into 2nd place in the Okefenokee Tournament. The accomplishments of this Championship Team will long be remembered by many. Carla Davis—Senior Lynn Helmuth—Senior Melissa Hyers—Senior It has indeed been a pleasure for me to work with the members of the 1985 Lady Herons Softball Team. Their pride in themselves, their determina- tion to always play their best, their dedication to the sport, and their good sportsmanship are traits that everyone should strive harder to attain. They have served as an inspiration to them- selves and to their coach. I will be for- ever grateful to these young ladies for their presence in my life. 126 Softball N O While we students are here at BCHS expanding our goals, so are the business-minded citizens of Brantley County. With the new projects being un- dertaken by the work force of our county, Brantley seems to be gradually expanding. The new fourlane highway is one example of these projects. In the middle of construction, it has given Nahunta and surrounding communities a new face. Most agree that the highway will bring prosperous business in- terests into our county. c L 0 w N 1 N G D U R I N G B U S I N E S S H O u R S Ads 127 Autographs Congratulations to the Class of 1986 Good Luck Seniors of 1986 Nahunta Drugs Brunswick Pulp Land Company Brunswick Pulp Paper Company Pharmacist—Jim Shaw Nahunta, Georgia Complete Line of Bridalwear Bridesmaid, Mother of Bride, Flower girls and Tuxedos by Mitchells and After Six Queen’s Bridal and Formal Open 10-6 Mon. thru Sat.
