Theme ) Friends are an aid to the young, to guard them from error: to the elderly, to attend to their wants, and to supplement their failing power of action; to those in the prime of life, to assist them to noble deeds. —Aristotle. 4 -Tbcn The only way to have a friend is to be one. A friend is a person with whom I may be sin- cere. Before him I may think aloud. Happy is the house that shelters a friend. A friend may well be reckoned the master- piece of nature. Indeed we do; they are Sheila Williams and Ronnie Hurst. One need only to glance at their aca- demic record to verify their intellectual ability. They arc certainly an asset to our school. It doesn’t take long for a visitor at B.C.H.S. to take note of our best-dressed seniors. Christy Rowell and Kevin Woods! Always neat and stylish these two could easily have stepped out of Seventeen Magazine. The rest of the week students were either dressed in camouflage, as Michael Jackson, as a cowboy, or showing their spirit in blue or gold to carry out the festivities of Homecoming week. As rain drenched the fans and players Friday night, the Herons overcame an opening kickoff touchdown by McIntosh to win our Homecoming game 28-18. The ceremonies at half time were stiH carried out even though they were brief and the court and their escorts had to trudge onto the field under umbrellas for the announcement of the 1984-85 Queen. Miss Christy Rowell. Many students pre- ferred the warmth and dryness of the Homecoming Dance which carried a better attendance of stu- dents since not all desired to brave it out in the icy rain. This was definitely a Homecoming all wil re- member. Homecoming 31 ji Suff Board of Education Chairmen: John I. Coaches 98 Football—Layout by: Chns and Tracy Sot tic heaves a long one. There is no question in anyone's mind; noKoachev sports riters, fans, or football players, that region 2AA is the toughest region in the state. This was our challenge in preparation for our 1984 season. It was one that never let up. be- ginning with the first game through the last, and after a decisive  ictory over Vidalia in the spring game our fuse was lit. The Herons opened their season with AAA Ware County. W ith first game mistakes in the 1st half. Ware shot out to a quick lead, but settling down and playing football in the 2nd half the Herons battled back, only to fall short 34 to 18. It never got easier, only tougher. Our next ballgame was an improvement over the last, against former A AAA Wa ne Co. The now AAA school had waxed (Jlynn Academv the week before and were looking for an easy prey. The powerful Jackets jumped out to an earls lead, but with grim determination the “W ar Herons edged their way back into the game onl to miss the mark in the closing minutes 20 to 12. Wayne managed to sneak out of town with their lives. The Herons had paid a phvsical price in the 1st two ball games and missing some starters, we took on playoff-bound Clennvillc and their Blind Officials Association. Leading through the first half but lacking depth due to injuries, we fell behind in the second half to lose 25-7. But you can only back good old boys into a corner just so deep before they come out swinging. W ith most of the team healthy , the 27-12 win over Charlton Co. made the statement loud and clear that the Herons were back and that the fuse was getting short. The surprising 3 I team from McIntosh was the next to find themselves in a bloods war as the Herons plaved the dominating role again. The score, 28 to 18. ioo Varsity Football; Layout by: Chris Tracy Varsity Football Schedule Herons 18 Herons 12 Herons Herons 27 Herons 28 Herons 10 Herons 6 Herons 21 Herons 11 Herons 20 Ware 34 Wayne 20 Glenville 25 Charlton 12 McIntosh 18 Pierce 6 Waycross 28 Berrien 7 Irwin 41 Bacon 6 1 The Herons- s-the Bears. Don't pick us for our Homecoming anymore. Hiding our plays from the Him, the offense was resened by the coaches. This allowed Pierce to try to sneak up on us, but we were still to strong and held on 10-6. Way cross, the “spoiler”, has as much business being in our region as the Ga. Bulldogs. But our unawed team backs down from noone. With the motto, “W ant Some?, Get Some!”, we held them to just six points in the 1st half. Going into the 2nd half, our quarterback injured early in the game and no help from the guys that wear stripes, the lights began to dim as Waycross started pulling away to win 28 to 6. The parts wasn't over though, and the thunder that day seemed to announce the war that was to he fought that night. With 6 I Berrien Co. riding in on a hot streak, the Herons faced a do-or-die situation for a spot in the playoffs. With pure old domination, the Herons dealt the high-riding Rebels an equalizer. The Herons knocked them down to size 21 to 7. One could see the steam rising from the practice Held as we, the soldiers, would take on the great arms of the North. Irwin Co. We fought hard by Irwin Co.’s coach's words. “We have plased our tough- est game against the Herons to date.” Final score: Irwin 41 —Brantley II. With a chance for the playoffs slipping away after having been closer than ever before, could the soldiers fight once more? The only team that defeated Way cross this year. Bacon Co., headed south near the swamp to where the Herons live. With one last shot for glory the fuse was lit once more. The steel trap defense and the revived offense attacked the Red Raiders and ate 'em alive, 23 to 6. The Herons won and deserved the name of the meanest team in the sub-re- gion”. and they accomplished more than expected by the people who know the territory. They paid the price, and we should all be proud of them. Layout by: Chris Tracy, Varsity Football ioi i(MKf©s 84-85 s- : This year. 1964-85. was truly the season for Coach Altman and his junk yard birds. These a wesome birds had a truly dominating season with a record of 5-1-1, which by the way was the best J. V. record ever. In the first game, the so called mighty bulldogs faced the yard birds. The Heron coaches knew the bulldogs were good, but he also knew his birds were tough. After we slaughtered the dawgs 28-6. there was not any doubt in either teams mind who was best. The Herons didn t slow down, as a matter of fact, they did a little better. Wayne Co expected to attack the birds in a state of over- confidence. Unfortunately, for Wayne Co, the birds defense held tough to produce their first shut- out. The offense? They performed spectacularly by mustering up 26 points. Next against the Indians of Charlton Co. the Herons again prevailed victorious, winning 300. As the Herons were really rolling, they perhaps faced their toughest opponent—Long Co High School Varsity. The J. V. s first night game was not a disappointment to the home town fans. The rowdy junk yard birds defeated Long Co. 28-20 in a close game. But soon the Herons were to face the mighty Gators of triple A Ware Co. It too was a super good game. Fortunately, for the Gators they escaped with a victory: 22-33. The Herons didn t let the loss drag them down, they came back fighting in the next game with the mean, fiesty, bears of P.C. It was indeed a knock down, drag-out game. The game ended in a tie: 6-6. Obviously the Herons were tired of being slowed down because they gave McIntosh a game they will never forget. The Herons proved themselves totally competent by destroying Mcl. Acad. 46-0. This was without a doubt the year of the JUNK YARD BIRDS!. 102 Junior Vanity—Layout by: Tracy and Chris Layout by: Chris and Tracy-Junior Varsity 103 SENIORS 84-85 Back Row: Roger Sloan, Timmy deadlock, Darrell Hendrix, Brian Steedly, Len Davis, Paul Rowell. Brantley County High School introduced a fall sport into its already vast array of extracurricular activities. The sport was softball and it served as a pioneer ball club to a group of enthusiastic participants. The season began with the Lady Herons pitted against some very strong team in the region. Their efforts in their first few games fell short but contributed to an overall experience that led them to a vote of confidence. Their regional re- cord was split: 4 wins, 4 losses. In each game, the Lady Herons exhibited their strongest attacks. Each opponent was bewildered at the talents of such a young team. Overall, the girls made the mark in history with a very suc- cessful season. Coaches: Ms. Annette Rainge and Mrs. Sissy Baxley. Team Members! Paulette Sloan. Christy Rowell, Rebecca Rowell. Our team is a lit- tle smaller than usual, but they still are working hard and going full force. This year’s coaches were Mike Pack and Forest Thomas. Following in last year's coach's footsteps was NO BIG DEAL, and with last year's coaching experience, Coach McCoy did the job well. This year the hustlin’ Heron hoop- sters returned with the leadership and experience of Darrell Hendrix. Scottie Johns. Timmy Med- lock, Garfield Green, and Gerald Hall. The hard-working Heron hoopsters proved to be somewhat tough at home, near unbeatable, thanks to their fabulous fans who continuously contributed to the awesome atmosphere at the nasty nest. With the loss of name players such as Carla Hen- drix, Anita Morgan, and Kim Tucker this could very well be called a rebuilding year. The girls played the game with fire in their eyes. We should really be proud of the fine effort they showed. Chris and Tracy: layout by—Basketball 115 if. BOS ft ffly BHS Coach: D. Altman—J.V.: D. Horne, M. Calahan. T. Steedley, K. Rowell, J. Parker. After an outstanding season last year, this year’s J.V. Boys had a hard goal to shoot for. With the loss of key players like Wendell O’neal and Gerald Hall to the Varsi- ty, the team was lacking in power. They still used their talent to deal out some stiff competition to their oppo- nents, and to create a good season. They finished above average for the year and we're very proud of them. ii6 J.V. With this leadership she helped place Brantley County in 3rd in the South and 5th over all. Our young team did extra-ordinarily well this year, the debate team started with all new commers, with the exception of their 1st Aff. The Affirmative team left their mark with a record of 3-1. For their first year the negative Team did some surprising, they walked away with a win against Pierce County. As a result, this years team paves a road for a brilliant future for the upcoming years of B.C’.H.S.’s debaters. Ms. Grace Malmberg—84-85 Debate Coach — Brantley County High School's Affirmative Team members (3-1) Literary was held in Statesbourgh Ga. Friday Jan. 18th. Those attending from Brantley County were as follows: Ms. Lam- bert, Ms. Malmberg, Constance Shuman, Missy Griffin, Katie Compain, Lea King, Stefanie Picklesimer, Kevin Woods, and Mary Lee Timmerman. 1st Affirmative—Senior—Stefanie Picklesimer 2nd Affirmative—Junior—l a King i }6 Drbatr Layout by: Stefanie Picklesimer Brantley County Has National Contest Winner!!! When Kathy Mercer (now Kathy Mercer West berry) started her home economics class four years ago little did she know the exposure she would gain from that class would help her become not only a seamstress but also the second place winner of a national sewing contest before she graduates from B.C.H.S. this spring. Kathy will graduate this spring but she is presently employed by ’Alene’s Fabric Shop’ in Jesup where she does retail work and sews for individuals. Mrs. Cindy Ham, Kathy’s Home Economics teacher encouraged her to enter “Sew-A- Sensation” contest sponsored by White Sewing machines, McCall patterns, and Offray Ribbon Company. One requirement of the contest was to use a McCall’s pattern; Kathy chose pattern no. 8925 which is a Laura Ashley design top and skirt. The Pullover top has a tucked sailor collar, a dicky and necktie. It has elbow length sleeves which are pleated to the hands. The skirt is full gathered with a buttoned waistband, pockets inside front seams and a back zipper closing. Every contrasting color on the outfit is appliqued to has the ribbon sewn on. Kathy appliqued 13 sailboats on the skirt, one on the front of the top and two on the back. She top stiched 44 yards of gros grain ribbon onto the garment using every size ribbon that is made. Kathy named her dress ’a sailors dream’. Kathy won $300.00 cash and a White sewing machine that will sew 10 different stiches for her second place winning entry for the national contest. «57 The 1985 DAR and SAR Good Citizens of Brantley County High School are a well known couple on campus. A friend remembers, but knows when to forget. A friend is someone who can communicate with you without saying a word. SU ’ PP A FRIEND 142 oodng A FRIEND? IS YOU! A friend doesn't ask any questions. A friend is someone who shares even when their is only enough for one. A friend is someone who believes in you. A friend makes you feel safe. A friend is someone who doesn’t want a friend who is perfect. Closing 14 3 Friends is a word we use every day. Most of the time we use it in the wrong way. Now you can look the word up again and again. But the dictionary doesn’t know the meaning of friends. And if you ask me you know I couldn’t be much help. Because a friend’s somebody you just know yourself. Someone o.k. and will treat you real cool. Someone who'll take the time out for being the fool. We like to be with some because their funny. Others come around when they need some money. Some you grew up with around the way. And you’re still real close to this very day. And this list goes on again and again But these are the people that we call friends! The finished product of our year's effort now lies in your hands. You have now come to the conclusion of a year's worth of headaches, ideas, confusion, dedication, cooperation, and excitement. We have come through many hours of frustration and exasperation only to triumph with the 1984-85 edition of THE HERON. It has been both a pleasure and an honor to serve as Editors of the Heron. We have learned to handle different situations that we have come upon and be victorious in the end. It's a relief to know that all of the quadpacks have been sent in. all the type sheets have been typed, and all of the proof sheets have been checked. In a way. though, it's sad too. We've worked so long and hard on this project, that it’s hard to believe that it’s over. We have many memories of all of the hours we and the staff have put into this edition of the HERON. We hope we have captured, within these pages of this book, the life at Brantley County High School as you remember it best. The good times, and the bad times are reproduced here for you. the student body. For without you. there would be no need for the 1984-85 Heron. We will always remember the experiences we have been forced with as editors. Sincerely. 1984-85 editors. Stefanie Picklesimer and Tracy Thomas Layout by: Lynda and Stef ante 144 The End . . .
