Our hearts and minds arc both entwined; Our voice in song now raises. We love your fields of stately pines. The heron's grace, the flaming vines; Our alma mater is enshrined Within our hearts forever. We pledge to you our constant aim To ever keep your sacred name Untarnished by the stress and strain That ever threatens learning. We love your name, your standards high. Your constant urge to live and try; And we shall never let them die. Your loyal sons and daughters! To All Teachers You who guided us; from our first day to our last; 1st grade through 12th. You who laughed with us, cried with us, rejoiced in our achievements, helped us when we failed and kept us on our feet with your encouragement; And you who dedicated your time to help us make these the best years of our lives, we dedicate this poem to you. And sadness walks the halls. As tears slip softly down our faces. For death has touched us all. For one so young and vital. Has been taken by God’s will. And left a place so empty. That no one else can fill. That one night has changed our lives. We’ll never be the same. For today we face the knowledge. Life’s more than just a game. And though we know we must go on, You’ll always be a part. Of everything we say and do. For we hold you in our heart. Becky Davis October 17, 1983 Even though Calvin has gone to a new world beyond, his memory will always remain with us. We loved him very much and he had many friends. His smile or one of his funny jokes would make someone's day. Calvin made classtime enjoyable. He is missed very much by all. Wc all share the pain and we all try to remember the laughter he shared with us. We, the Sr. Class of 84, dedicate this annual to the memory of Calvin Edgy. Class of 84 By: Robyn Chapman—Pres. It is as Amcri- p can as hotdogs and apple pie. Teenagers today have even turned • roller skating into disco form. If you can move your arms, hips, and legs you are familiar with the latest dances. Today’s dances are rather simple with difficult names such as the “New Wave.’’ One would think it's a new way to hail their fellow students. Then you have the old adventurous “Horse. With this dance one would think you wanted to ride away into the sunset on your horse. The dance, “Walk, is just what it sounds like. It’s very simple; you just walk yourself across the floor to the beat of the music. The “Itch, is a dance that involves a lot of shaking. One would think you have a rash and need to scratch. The “Smurf' is another popular dance. The “Smurf’ originated from your favorite Saturday morning cartoon show. Last but not least, there is the old two step slow dance. This will probably always be around. So, if you can move your arms, hips, and legs you can: “Smurf’, “Walk , “Itch , and “New Wave. ancm f Juniors SS SPEED jj LIMIT 1 A. HEY!! We rate an A-O.K.!!! B. During my year as editor, I have learned the true meanings of patience, confusion, panic, and relief as the staff rushed to meet deadlines. We, the staff, hope that through all these moments of hope, hard work, and dedication, the memories of the 1983-84 school year were vividly captured and displayed within the pages of this book. The Annual Staff would like to extend their sincere appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Ruby Moody and Mrs. Darlene Lane, who helped us iron out the wrinkles by proofreading; Mr. Tom Neal, our company representative, for his patience and support; the ad- ministration and faculty for their cooperation; and Mr. John Pick- lesimer for his endless efforts to guide us in the right direction. I have thoroughly enjoyed having the privilege to serve as editor of the 1984 HERON. This experience will always be uppermost in my mind as one of the most rewarding and cherished times of my life. It brought me many memories and friends I know I will never forget. Laura Farr. Editor Mr. John Picklesimer is not only a great advisor- but a friend also. He is always will- ing to lend a helping hand, but yet he never takes the full credit he rightfully deserves. Without him, this annual could never be what it is. He is dedicated and loyal to the Annual Staff, which is two great qualities that all ad- mire in him. He is full of encouragement at all times. Not only the Annual Staff, but many other students at BCHS love and respect him. Mr. Picklesimer is someone we feel we arc lucky to have as our advisor. Their fervor prior to the games seemed unbounded. The team car- ried this fervor to the season opener, but lost 20-6 to the AAA Camden County’s awesome defense. West Nassau, who later went to Florida state play-offs, was next. Herons dominated winning 28-18. The next big win came against Hilliard, when the Herons devastating offense rolled up 47 points to their 26. The next three games were tough! Ware, Bacon, and Pierce triumphed over the Herons, but not without a gallant effort from the mighty Herons. Brantley spirit was really afire at the Ware game. It was a night to remember! Although team and fans were discouraged after three losses, the Herons made a quick recovery in lime for Homecoming. The Herons, demonstrating outstanding defensive talent, swooped down on Charlton and flew away with the game 26-6. It was an exciting night as Brantley's Homecoming court was presented and Sonya Flowers was crowned Homecoming Queen. The Herons stole another game, this time from McIn- tosh 28-7. The last game of the season proved to be a tough one. Irwin took the game 41-11. Herons ended the season with a 4-6 record. Even though they didn't make region play-offs as anticipated, our Herons still had a lot to be proud of. Their enthusiasm was contagious and their ad- herence to total physical and mental training respected. So here's to a great team, outstanding coaching staff and to next year's potentially promising team! Lee C 160 12 Football 111 With talent and determination, the Junior Var- sity Herons ended the season with a 3-3 record. To start off the season the J.V. played Waycross and let a win slip through their hands as Waycross completed a long pass that set them up for a touch- down in the final minutes. The final score was 15- 12. The baby Herons were pepped up as they rode into Charlton County and dominated the game by beating the Indians 36-0. Although the J.V. fought gallantly against their next opponent. Center Jr., the Herons still lost 20-16. Hilliard was expecting to destroy the Herons after their loss to Center, but the J.V. s offense and over-powering defense held them scoreless as the Herons won 18-0. As one of Brantley County’s arch rivals traveled down to Heron country, we were ready for them. In the first half the Gators dominated the field by leading by a score of twenty-five to six. During the half the coaches Donald Altman. Lee Stieve. and Danny “The Bear” McCoy really fired up the team on offense as well as defense. As the Herons started the second half they dominated on defense as our offense got a spark of life and began to score. Un- fortunately, the flame was not hot enough to win the game. It was a heartbreaking loss for the J.V. as they fought so hard but to lose 31-22. After this loss the Herons corrected their mistakes to battle the Pierce County Bears. The Herons defense again rose for the occasion as we sent the Bears back to their cave by winning 8-0. J.V. There were many participants who trained hard after school even though some were involved in other sports and their dedication still excelled. These 11 boys will be. of course, our Varsi- ty Basketball team. For the most part, our Varsity, this year, has really show n what they are made of and that is both control and determination! Second year coach F'.B. Price led the Herons to a 8-13 season, which was an extreme improvement over last year. Although all of the players played magnificently well, no one on the team was consistently outstand- ing. All players combined to form a team that gave 100% every game. Although the Herons began the season on the wrong foot, they fell back into stride with a stunning upset over Pierce C ounty 38-33. The Herons went on to win over West Nassau 53-50. The following four games were distressing losses for the Herons. The 11 crons stride fluctuat- ed throughout the season with win losses, but with continued hard work and practice the players looked forward to their sub-region play-offs. And try again the Herons did as they slipped one over on West Nassau for the first win of the season 45-39. McIntosh, in turn, slipped one over on the Herons 30-49 but there was little despair, as the Herons downed Bacon 30- 29 and continued their winning streak as they bounced Pierce 36-35. The Lady Herons evened the score with West Nassau with a 35-29 win. T he Ml.ady Herons were still on a roll as they defeated a big rival. Ware County 33-31. At the tournament. Ware sneaked up and beat the Lady Herons 25-26. The Herons continued doing a great job throughout the rest of the season as they awaited region play-offs. Basketball 121 Head Coach: D. McCoy. K. They were up against some tough competition, but their strength and determination could be seen throughout each game. Brantley County can say they were represented extremely well this year.
