Although their statistics showed that the Herons had more offense than the Wildcats, in the end the Wildcats were the ones to come out winners. This was but a faint glimmer of the fire that was beginning to burn. It was time to go back to the drawing board and reevaluate personnel with the new look of six player changes. The Herons went to work to prepare for the Warriors, an unbeaten team, ranked 1 in Class Triple-A. from Callahan Florida. As the bus turned down the long, winding dirt road to the field, there was a light rain falling on Callahan, Florida. This was the proverbial calm before the storm. For the next 48 minutes there was a blood-letting in Florida. That night the Herons became winners, with a score of 14-12. Then at the “Nest” for the first time in 82. the Herons took on the Clinch . . . 108 Football . . County Panthers. The glorious Herons destroyed the Panthers from the very first kick-off. For the second time this year, the Herons knew what the sweet taste of victory was like. The score 24-13. The earth cracked as the traditional Triple-A power house, the Ware County Gators, let their jaws fall hard on the determined Herons. In a 27-12 shoot-out hearts were broken, for this could have been the game of games, but the tremendous speed and depth of the Gators overcame the heartfilled, entusiasm of Coach Murray’s boys. Thus the bitter taste of defeat which was to remain in the mouth of every player and coach from Brantley for the next two weeks. No one that watched the Bacon County Raiders escape with their lives could ever be satisfied with this 7-0 win over Brantley. The Herons defense shut down the Raiders offense to minus yards rushing. The only offense generated by Bacon County all night long resulted in their one score. Thirty-five yards of very questionable penalties, back to back, put the Herons in a hole on the five yard line. On their fourth play from the five yard line the Raiders managed to score, but then who wouldn’t with four plays from the five yard line. Brantley's hopes for a sub-region play-off birth were beginning to die. The Pierce County Bears roared onto the field with an iron determination. They were going to try and steal a Double-A sub-region game from the much respected Herons. There was no slacking off. no one even thought about giving in to the troubles so the fun went on. Football l 15 . . . After two weeks of hard practice and reward, the Brantley County Herons were hungry. One might say that they were lean and mean. The cool breeze that swept across the battle field at Fort Charlton welcomed an angry fight. For the first time in the history of this rival war, the Indians were defeated by Brantley on their home turf. But at last the mighty Herons, in an attempt to massacre another tribe of Indians went to Irwin County. The Herons were outmanned the entire game and fell into the grasp of their enemy, 38-6. But this was not the last hoorah. It was a promise of better things to come. Coach Lee Murray, “This year has been a special year for my coaches and me. We have become very close to the team. I do not think that this relationship will ever change. I have said before, our young men believed enough in themselves to become winners. That belief may have been all they had. for as talent, depth, and size escaped them. Character, determination, dedication, and heart were their team mates. The young recruits played very well despite their being outclassed by larger schools. The game against Ware County, being one of their best, was the Heron's ballgame until the last two minutes of the fourth quarter. Ware blocked a punt at the 12 yard line and scored three plays later. The final score was 6-6, with Garfield Greene scoring the only touchdown for the Herons. Waycross vs. Brantley in a neighboring battle. The Waycross Bulldogs had total control of the first half, shutting the Herons out. The second half was Brantley’s. There is more of an interest in track this year than ever before, that interest and determination is what will help these young men—Win!!! The 1983 track section is dedicated to Coach Forrest Thomas, for his undieing devotion to his teams. Coach Thomas pushed them to limits be- yond imaginable comprehension. He urged his teams to strive for goals of impossible reach and helped them to accomplish such dreams. Thank you Coach Forrest Thomas from the 1983 Track teams. Track 133 Sub-region 2-AA tennis—BEWARE! Along with the up-coming girls’ team is the Veteran line-up of the boys’ team. The Herons boy’s tennis team is com- posed of: last year's first doubles seed seniors Eric Highsmith and Ricky Lee; last years second doubles seed Thomas Thrift and Richie Meyers; also returning for another year is junior Joe Knox. New comers this year are juniors Sandy Lee. Michael Saxon, and Joe Sowell; sophomore Kelvin Thornton; Freshman Gary Jones, Devant Wainright, Brad Tucker, Jeff Moore, and Chuck Wilson. The Heron boys’ team has a multi- tude of raw talent competing in 1983. Brantley tennis players have never real- ly been taught the full fundamentals of tennis so they must rely mostly on raw talent. Plenty of raw talent, that they do have. Much is expected from Brantley’s tennis teams in 1983 and they will be held to it. A promising year ahead—for the 1983 Heron Tennis Teams. Last year’s girls’ singles seed Miss Kim Tucker re- turns for her second year for Brantley. Miss Tucker is a sophomore at Brantley and is the only “returning” player for the Heron girls’ tennis team. With the exception of Miss Tucker all of the girls are Freshman, consisting of: Lori Ann Hinesley. Alethea Horne, Lea King, Jua- nita Sutton, Stephanie Sutton, and Nickie Woodard. This young team has a great deal of talent—yet to be discov- ered. The future of Brantley’s girls ten- nis team rests in these girls hands. top left: Lori Ann warming up as the season begins, top right: Our fearless leader Coach Donald Altman, above: The young and talented Brantley girls; tennis team, bottom: The veteran boys' tennis team. What a day! The people at Brantley never seem to slow down. They rush from class to class. It's enough to give me one big headache! I just hope I will get used to it. I've already decided on my major for four years—GIRLS! There's bigger variety here than at my old grade school. I love it! I've already fallen in love with a cute little brunette in my homeroom. Well, she's not little, but she's not gigantic either. Tomorrow I'll definitely say Hi when I see her! All my teachers seem to like me. Now if only I can get to like them! But things aren't going to bother me this year— not the guys, not the girls, not the teachers, not the home- work. nothing . . . well, maybe the homework. 160 Closing Closing 161 Perennial Affliction AFFLICTION: Springitis VICTIMS: Occured with varying degree of severity among 98% of all students. SYMPTOMS: Began with glazed eyes (third week.of school). Progressed slowly and steadily towards a gradual deteriora- tion of homework quality until complete absence thereof. Growing inability to do classwork, homework, housework, and yardwork. TREATMENT: Summer Vacation PROGNOSIS: Excellent recovery rate with proper treatment. Most victims complete- ly recovered after summer. Closing Closing 163 Somewhere Down The Road 4 We always knew Inside we wouldn’t be here for a long time, those dreams of ours are shining on distant shores and if they’re calling us away, no one has the right to make us stay. ’Cause Somewhere Down The Road our roads are gonna cross again it doesn’t really matter when; but try to understand we have to go out on our own so we can find our way back home. 164 Closing Closing 165 The day I looked forward to for 12 years has come and gone like a dream. I am now a high school “grad”, but somehow the great feeling I expected leaves something to be desired. Sure, it’s great to sleep in while I hear my little brothers rushing off to the bus stop. But what will I do to- day? Shop, watch soap operas, eat ... ? Dad keeps bugging me about finding a job, but it seems like no one wants summer help”. Come August, I'll be back at school again—college this time. Mom has been dropping hints about what to do with the rest of my life. I guess parents want their kids to turn out to be everything good. I’ve got some work ahead of me. That long coveted diploma that was placed in my trembling hand is no guarantee of an easy, fun- filled, thrilling future. The time has come to say Thanks for the memories” and tackle the real world and its challenges. I know I can do anything if I put my mind to it. Now it’s time to move on. I'll miss the studs”, foxes”, “the couples”, the nobodies , but peo- ple do not stay the same, and my life will not stay 166 Closing Closing 167 ■•rantley (County High §c|,00j Kilninl.,. «rorjia Ctrtifits irti.nl irk f Speed and a - 'Schools into the world of the working ones around us.
