Assistant Principal, Coach James Thomas Valdosta State M.S., Voc. Ed. Vocational Superintendent 89 MR. JOHN C. HERNDON is a man who has spent the peak years of his life devoted to pass- ing on his ripened knowledge and wisdom to the students that he has taught. This gentlemen has not only taught at this school, but has become a part of the school. His leadership in Literary has taken many of his participants to top honors. Not only his leadership but his friendship will be missed by all of those fortunate enough to have met him. MRS. DARLENE LANE has contributed much to this school. So much that we often forget the little things as well as the big ones. In the short time she has been here she has gained much respect and many friends. She has proved over and over her dedication. She has sponsored the Math Team and they have made us proud. She has also done countless amounts of work for this annual and without her help and guid- ance sometimes it would have seemed impossible. We, the students of Brantley County, would like to show our appreciation to these three outstanding teachers. COACH JOHN PAUL PICKLESIMER has done a lot to help this school. He shows the students and fellow teachers that he cares. He always takes the time to try to help others. He earns the students respect because he shows them respect. A student may not realize their own potential but he always pushes you to reach goals you thought you couldn’t achieve. Coach has helped the students in putting out the annual, he of- ten spends his free time at home working on layouts and printing pictures. Without his help in setting up a better darkroom and his experiments with cam- eras and equipment this annual would not be possible. Thanks Coach, for all your help and un- derstanding, and gratitude by dedicating this annual 90 LANGUAGE ARTS Carolyn Thomas GA. Southern College B.S. Ed. English A.R. Woods 98 101 Varsity In recent years Charlton County has dominated Brantley both at home and on the road. However, this year the Indians came to a soaked Brantley field where the spirits were high and the Herons prevailed. Our first Sub-Region game was played here at home. The team execution like that exhibited between Sowell and Ham caused the Herons to capture their second home victory. Our third home victory came after a rowdy Heron defense bowed its back to keep the Glenville dogs out of the end- zone late in the fourth quar- ter where a Touchdown would have been FATAL. Despite the size of Brantley’s line and the talented backs such as Wilson and Johnson the Clinch County Panthers out-quickened the Herons for the first loss. At mid-season with Home- coming week kindling a fired-up Brantley squad, the Atkinson Rebels were shut out to a 36-0 loss. This was the first time in several years Brantley had won a home- coming game. ( ( 102 Football Winding down the season Brantley slipped and fell to quick and aggressive Mont- gomery squad. On the backside of the season Brantley traveled to a triple A Camden County where turnovers were a thorn in the Herons side causing not a drive to be successful. With only two games left the Herons traveled to a lifelong rival Blackshear who has combined with our arch en- emy the Patterson Eagles. On a COLD October night with the home field advan- tage the Pierce County Bears took the last sub-region game from the Herons. After having our homecoming ruined 1 year ago, Brantly administered a dose of their own medicine when it captured its 2nd sub-region win over Bacon 28- 7. y y Brantley needing only one more win to slip into 2nd place of the sub-region had to face Berrien County. Ber- rien a traditional play-off contender had to win or would be knocked out. After a rowdy Heron defense made some adjustments allowed only 3 points in the 2nd half. A playoff spot slipped from sight as Brantley lost its 2nd sub-region battle. 103 Clinch—42 Brantley—14 Atkinson—0 Brantley—36 Charlton—0 Brantley—30 Glenvillc—8 Brantley—14 Irwin—7 Brantley—29 Camden—26 Brantley—0 Montgomery—21 Brantley—15 Bacon—7 Brantley—28 Pierce—23 Brantley—0 Berrien—41 Brantley—0 104 Some Special Herons Bruce Gibson— Larry Little— Jay Ham— MVP MVP MVP Kent Thomas— Thad Johnson— Calvin Baker— MVP MVP MVP Mike Sowell— Emory Allen— Gary Wilson— MVP MVP MVP Region 2AA proved to be the best in Georgia Football in the year 1982.........Playing the best percentage football of the States ... in overall won-lost records in the States 96 Class AA teams stacked up .... Never before has such support been expressed by the Heron fans. Especially those teachers and parents recognized here. Even though class spirit is important, all of the students pulled together to push the Herons to a 5-5 season. 106 B-Team Football left: Our B-Team didn’t have the best of years, but it was far from the worst. These girls show great promise, skill, and competitiveness. We want to continue to show our support of these young athletes. YOUNG LADY HERONS DO IT AGAIN!!! Coach Gayler and Coach Ranew led our girls to a victori- ous season this year. Through their dedication and patience they have helped to make our young “Lady Herons’ a winning team. We, the students of BCHS would like to extend our gratitude to these two for all they have done to make us proud. COACH DEBBIE GAYLER and COACH MIKE RANEW “Keep up the good work girls, and re- member: We’re behind you all the way!” 124 The citizens of Brantley County have certainly shown their support of BCHS by attending all sports events. Although many practices were hard and strenu- ous, they look back and see it was well worth it. During the summer, at camp in Statesboro, they put forth the effort and worked learning new cheers, chants, and stunts. They also won a spirit stick which was only given to a few squads. I will always remember the year the annual staff and I were able to put the activities of the school year of 1981-82 into the covers of this book. Thanks to the ef- fort, determination, and dedication displayed through the continuous retyping of typesheets, redoing layouts, and rushing to meet deadlines, by the annual staff, this yearbook has been a great success. We, the annual staff, would like to thank our sponsors. Coach Picklesimer, Mrs. Lane, and Mrs. Moody, and the company representatives, David Patten and Tom Neal, for all of their guidance and support. We would, further like to thank our administration and faculty for their cooperation. A special note of thanks is extended to the businesses for their support through advertisements. Finally we cannot close without thanking the students for making the “Heron 82” possible. We hope this yearbook will one day “one by one” bring back the sweet memories of the year 1981-82. 159 The annual staff would like to pay tribute to Tina Thrift who Even though Coach Picklcsimcr only hangs around, we would still like to has moved. thank him. The Herons were held to -13 yards rushing due to 7 sacks by the strong Wolfpack line. The Wolfpack rushed for 232 yards and Mike Sowell and Larry Little combined to hit 6 of nine passes for 86 yards. The Heron defense played tough at times and picked off two passes, one for a 39 yard score by Gary Wilson. The Wolfpack took the opening drive and started to work only to fumble away the ball at the Heron 23. The Herons could do nothing with it and punted. The Pack drove 50 yards to pay dirt, combining passes to Jay Ham and Calvin Baker to get the Pack to the 3 yard line where Larry Little bulled over with 2:40 left in the first quarter. That stood up for the Half after the missed extra point and the Pack led 6-0. With 1:28 to go in the third quarter again combining with Ham and Baker the Pack was on the two yard line where Mike Sowell pushed across the final Wolfpack score. The X-point failed and the score was 12-0. The ball exchanged hands twice and the Pack had a 1 st and 10 on their own 39 yard line when Louis Bailey hit Larry Little, behind the line of scrimmage, the ball bobblcd up and into Gary Wilson’s hands and without breaking stride raced 39 yards for the score. The X-point failed and that’s the way the game ended: 12-6 for the Wolfpack. Van Herrin and Timmy Sutton played outstanding Defense, along with the entire Wolfpack team. It was a first for the Seniors and will long be remembered. The Wolfpack had 17 1st downs to 2 of the Varsity Herons.
