They try to help the student learn and understand the beauty found in knowledge. They wonder if what they give is ever enough; they try to communicate, but it takes two. Their ever-present enemy is time because helping all students is their goal. The faculty and administration are the backbone of any college or high school; but their relationship with the students is vital for the betterment of Brantley County High School. 102 103 Gary Allbrook—Univ. of Al —Master of ARTS. An outstanding defensive effort by Brucie Gibson and a touchdown catch by Jay Ham was not enough as the Indians held off the Herons by a 19-6 count. Brantley s offense, which had sputtered the week before, came to life against Patterson to punish the Eagles 43-22. Tremendous offensive line blocking and a 200yard performance by Thad Johnson spearheaded the Brantley attack. Mike Sowell. Terry Highsmith. and John Strickland also sparkled in the victory. The Herons invaded Glen- ville to face a tough bunch of bulldogs. A long touchdown run by Johnson, and a touch- down pass from Mike Sowell to Stevens, put the Herons on top 12-6 at the half. An inspired Glenville squad tried desperately late in the game to catch the Her- ons but the defensive play of Scotty Highsmith helped the Herons down the Bull- dogs—19-13. After a dismal first-half which saw the Herons fall behind. Brantley ral- lied in the second half to crunch the Atkinson Co. Rebels 27-7. Johnson. Sowell, and Stevens played well offensively and Emory Allen led the Heron Defense which completely stifled the Alco attack. Brantley returned home to face the challenge of the stale ranked Clinch County Panthers. The Heron de- fense played aggressively against the quick Panther offense, allowing only one touchdown. A costly fum- ble late in the game saved the Pan- thers from defeat, and the Herons had to settle for a 7-7 lie. Van Her- rin displayed excellent pass-catch- ing ability and fine running throughout the game Following an open date the Herons had the unenviable task of playing the powerful Camden Co. Wildcats Early mistakes by the Herons gave Camden two quick touchdowns A dazzling pass from Larry Little to Jay Ham made the score 20-7 at the half. Although over-matched in size the Herons played gamely through- out the second half only to fall short 34-14. Terry Highsmith played an outstanding game for the Herons. The Blackshear Tigers were the next opponent for the Herons. Carter and Highsmith intercepted passes and Neal Stevens made sev- eral outstanding catches for the Herons. The Tigers which had good field position throughout the game were able to win the game despite aggressive defense by Brucie Gib- son. Brantley traveled to Ocilla to face the Irwin Co. Indians. After falling behind in the first half the Herons scored in the third quarter to make the score 9-7. A late touchdown by the Indians sealed the victory. Jay Ham played inspiring football for the Herons. The leader- ship of Senior Line-backer Robert Johns was sorely missed, this game and throughout the rest of the season. A physical Bacon County team was the next opponent for the Herons. Despite shutting down the inside running game the Red Raid- ers were able to make good gains on the sweep. Touch- down runs by Johnson and Sowell were not quite enough to save the game as Bacon escaped with a 24-15 win. Terry Highsmith made several saving tackles for the Herons. The Herons closed out the season in Nashville against the Berrien Co. Rebels. On several occa- sions the Heron defense stopped the Rebels in- side the 10 yard line but good field position en- abled Berrien County to score. Inconsistent pen- alties plagued the Heron offense throughout the game, and stopped sever- al Heron drives. I cannot deny I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others I believe in my own ability to work effi ciently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve your own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining, in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so — for others as well as myself, in less need for charity and more of it when needed, in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me I believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task (The creed was written by E M Tiffany, and adopted at the 3rd National Convention of the FFA Revised at the 38th Convention ) FFA Creed 181 FBLA Club Officers President: Judy Boatwright Vice President: Jerry Johns Secretary: Sonya Lee Treasurer: Valerie Lee Parliamentarian: Donna Thomas Reporter: Dawn Stevens 182 Terri Wilkerson t Dawn Stevens Clerk Typist I II 4th and 5th place (L) Sonya Lee Region Literary Shorthand 1st place Stale Literary Shorthand 4th place FBLA Mini-Conference Stenographer II 2nd place (R) Kitty Wiley FBLA Mini-Conference Stenographer I 1st place 183 Sponsor: Marie Sutton Drama 1980-81 First Period Sponsor: Karen Davis Sixth Period 184 PERSEPHONE These people represented 8.C.H.S. at Literary Kitty Wiley Jimmy Smith Gina Dowling Keith Stafford Scott Groover Pam Stone John Strickland Terry Highsmith Persephone Hades Demeter Hermes Cerberus Helen Achilles Charon Nancy Lee A tana Story Derrell Harris James Carter Wendy Dowling Patricia Chancey Janet Griffin Linda Lee Cassandra Electra Poly da mus Thyestes Ismene Polyxenda Prolgue Prompter 185 Hl-Y CLUB David Jackson—President Timmy Riggins—Vice President Keith Stafford—Secretary Marshall Green—Chaplain Kris Stephens—World Projects Chairman Larry Little—Community Projects Chairman Emory Allen—School Projects Chairman Eric Highsmith—Reporter Sponsor—Ms. Weatherman 186 CHORUS QUARTET Simeon Highsmith David Jackson Timmy Steedley Daniel Herrin Hew Members TRIO Tara Smith Marcia Gerrald Phyllis Herrin BOYS SOLO David Jackson GIRLS SOLO Phyllis Herrin 187 DIRECTOR Mrs. Marie Boyett 10th— nth— 12th 4-H Top left to right: Ms. Herrin. He has been our friend and teacher all through the years. ” He understands the students and the problems they face and works to solve these problems. “He has that special father trait about him. He is a man at all times. He is still our friend even when we disagree. He is understanding. He has a sense of humor.” He has plenty of patience when we don't understand, or when we act like nerds. He is warm and sincere. He gives the students the love and respect they need. He has always been there when we needed him. He is always willing to go that extra mile for his students. He cares. He has been our yearbook advisor, a great influence on our lives, and most of all a friend. Because he accepted us t he way we were and lit the corners of our minds with visions of what we are capable of be- coming. we the student body of BCHS dedicate this yearbook with love and respect to MR. JOHN P. PICKLE- SIMER. 191 The Good . . . The Bad . . . The Glad . . . The Funny . . . The Sad ... i The Wild . . . The Places . . . The Friends . . . Some of my happiest and most frustrating moments were spent in the annual staff room. The word DEADLINE became a new word in my vocabulary—it meant running, rushing, confusion, and, final- ly. relief when the last page was completed. Andrea Patterson Editor We would like to extend our thanks to Mrs. Ruby Moody and Mrs. Darlene Lane whose cooperation and patience were sincerely appreciated. also want to express my deepest thanks to the HERON staff for their dedication and hard work—this yearbook would not have been possible without their support and cooperation. The HERON staff hopes that years from now this book will kindle fond MEMORIES of 1981. We want you to remember all the laughter and good times that were shared. It is our sincere wish that as time and distance separate you from your friends at BCHS, this book will mean as much to you as it does to us. Sincerely.
