Brantley County High School Nahunta, Georgia 1976 HERON 1776-1976 We’ve Come This Far We’ve opened the doors to new horizons . . . 5 6 7 8 Or are we interested only in the achievements of ourselves? 10 With the answers to these questions we can start our way through life. 11 People like you are an asset to any class. You have been someone to confide in, someone to share our jokes, and someone willing to share in our fun. You always proved to us that you would stick by our side when others would turn us away. For these reasons and many more, we, the Senior Class of 1976, dedicate our yearbook to MRS. The Bacon Red Raiders using their size and hot hand forged ahead 22-8 in the first quarter behind the ten point performance of L. Deen, the 6 ft. 6 in. Red Raider center. The Bacon five went on to a 34-23 half time lead and even stretched it to a 53-35 third quarter lead. Brantley County had won over Bacon by one at Brantley and things looked dim, then in the fourth quarter, Brantley play- ed fantastic ball, what they had been capable of all year... with 6.09 left in the game and Bacon leading 55-34, the Her- ons exploded and pressed the Red Raiders back to Alma, pull- ing what has to be the greatest comeback victory In a long time. The Herons poured in 32 points in the final quarter and with 6 seconds left. Wayne Stewart, Brantley’s All State Guard, hit a driving lay up to tie the game at 66 all, andw« fouled on the play. Calmly Stewart went to the line and sank the free throw to give Brantley a come from be- hind victory 67-66 and place them in the finals against num- ber one seeded Irwin County Saturday night. Stewart took game honors with 27 big points, followed by Cobb with 11, Early Wilkerson 11, Steve Bell 8, Jeff Johns 8, and Albert Bryant added 2. Lynn Deen led Bacon with 15. On Saturday night, Brantley’s Heron squad took on Irwin Co- unties Indians in the finals of Sub-Region 2A in Douglas. The Indians had beaten the Herons twice in regular sea- son play. 82-55, and 84-60, but that was the regular season. Tonight, the South Sub-Reg- ion Championship was the Heron's bag and bag it they did. Irwin led 8-6 and that was the last time the Indians saw the lead as Brantley County played its finest game of its career, stopping the number one team cold and winning the Championship trophy with a 46-39 score. The Herons led by Sophomore Hazel Cobb, who tossed in 16 points, followed by Steve Bell and Wayne Stewart ten each, Jeff Johns contributed 6 to the winners and Albert Bryant and Early Wilkerson pitched in 2. Tony Gentry took game honors with 24 for Irwin. It wasn’t enough to win the championship trophy, Brantl- ey county's teams were also voted the South Georgia Coll- ege Sportsmanship Trophy also, so the Brantley County teams brought home all the hardware. The first in the school's young history for the boys. The Herons now face the run- ner-up Vidialia Indians in Alma Friday night at 8:30 to fight it out for a State Tourna- ment spot — something every one in Brantley County has been waiting for a long time. The Herons will go up against the sixth ranked team in the State, supporting a 18-4 won lost record. Irwin was 17-4 when they ran into the Herons. Leading the Indians is 6 ft. 5 in. Tyrone Jones, averaging 31 points a game and sought after by every college in the South. The Indians also have a 6 ft. 6 in. center, 6ft.4 in.forward and two 5 ft. 10 in. guards. The Herons will have to play their best game of the season to win. Leading the way for the Herons will be Wayne Ste- wart, 6 ft. guard, avg. 19.8 points per game, followed by Steve Bell, 5 ft. 10 in. guard, avg. 10.6 a clip, both seniors. In the post will be 6 ft. 2 in. Early Wilkerson, a junior avg. 9.4 a game, and in the forward spots will be 5 ft. 8 in. Hazel Cobb, sophomore, avg 10.6 a game, and Jeff Johns 6 ft. 5 in. junior or Albert Br- yant, 6 ft. 1 in. junior. Botf work well in the spot The Herons now stand ai eleven wins and 12 losses or the year-losing five games b} less than 7 points. 7 times this year the Herons have had 1C point or better leads and blowr them -- due to inexperience, but are now playing the best ball of any Brantley Count} High Team yet. Coach Picklesimer believe this to be his best team ever and it’s due to hard work, tre- mendous effort and fantastic crowd support. We have hac • people following us - -don’t quit now — come to Alma support us, yell andgetbehinc the Herons. We’re one game away from State! 155 T e r r y BY: Coach Picklesimer fhe Brantley County Herons will wind upa rebuilding year this Friday night when theyentertain the Patterson Eagles. Patterson defeated them in Patterson63-51 to start the second half of the season. The Herons losing four starters off last year’s team have tied a school record for wins, while posting the best overall record of any Brantley County High Team. The Herons started off slow in compiling a 3-5 record into the Christmas Break.but have gone 5-5 since then. The Herons crushed McIntosh Academy 79-57, then Nicholls 60-43, then lost a heartbreakeratthebuzzer to Charlton County 57-55. The Herons then went to Blackshear and trounced the Tigers 72-58. Onthe road tolrwin, the top team in the region and the Herons fell 60-84. Bacon County came in and the Herons and Red Raiders fought it out for second place in the Region with probably the biggest Brantley County win ever as the Herons took a 48-47 decision from the Alma crew, then to Broxton where the Herons fell at the end of the game 72-71, St. George came in and the Herons had a little score to settle, seeing how the Herons played a pitiful game the first game of the season and lost to St. George 45-69, this time the Herons actually stomped the Bears, 84-43 in a very impressive win. Then came tothe State’s third ranked team and Clinch County handed another defeat to the Herons 81-58. All in all though, this season has been enjoyable. The coaches felt the Herons should have won some games they lost, and actually won some games no one thought 157 Varsity Cheerleaders Lisa Johns, Sheliah Moody, Cindi Dudley, Vickie Crews, Kathy Patten, Melinda Highsmith, Nina Able, Ginger Thomas, Beverly Hendrix, Donna Bradshaw, Cheryl Gunter Football Captains - Cheryl Gunter Basketball Captain - Nina Able 160 Co-Captain - Vickie Crews Co-Captain - Sheliah Moody SP-IR-IT!!
