1970-71 HERON EDITORS COMMENTS Being editor of your 1970-71 HERON has been an un- forgettable and cherished honor in which I give my thanks to the Senior Class for making possible this opportunity. I find it hard to choose the right words to express this ex- perience and as I contemplate, I realize that words can't express such emotions as tears, tension, worry, happiness, and a feeling of reward, all of which have been my com- panions from the beginning to the end of the construction of this yearbook. I have learned the true meaning of re- sponsibility and hopefully, this experience has helped to prepare me to cope with the many responsibilities that are awaiting me in life. We, the annua! staff, hope that we have captured some of the many memories that are of importance to you which you will cherish and carry with you always. I would like to give my personal thanks to the staff who gave their enthusiasm and constant help; to our sponsors who encouraged our ideas and helped us to carry them through; to Roger Musgrove who contributed the art; to Clifton Roberson, who through his patience and skill, served as our photographer; and most of all to YOU, for your interest and support. May you enjoy this yearbook as much as we en- joyed preparing it. Thank You.

THE HERON 1970-71 The Heron is the Brantley County mascot whom each mem- ber of B.C.H. S. is very proud of. It has truly been a symbol of determination, good sportsmanship, and victory through- out our football and basketball season. So, let's probe into the life of our mascot. The heron's long legs, long neck, long bill, and cxpres - sion of constant surprise combine to give the heron an appear- ance, which once seen, is not likely to be forgotten. The heron is further famoxB for a greedy appetite. His most out- standing characteristic is his beautiful plum age which puts him in danger, because without mercy, men have hunted this lovely bird to take from it, his beautiful plumes known as aigrettes . They can be found grouped together in colonies known as heronries . We are a representation of the heron and its way of life. Brantley County High School is our nest where we group to- gether into our heronries. Here, the adult herons teach the younger ones in order that we may grow MENTALLY by in- creasing our knowledge in various subjects; and PHYSICALLY through participation in sports. Our big appetite revolves around sports because of our hunger to beat the opponent. Of course, many of the students wear an expression of constant surprise daily, becauseoftheirmischievious pranks and ideas. During our beauty pageants, the herons with their beautiful plumage, compete to obtain the title of Miss B.C.H.S. As theyears progress filled with laughter, tears, fun and memo- ries, each heronstrives toward maturity, changing his opinions and ideas on life. Finally, we find ourselves graduating, being released into the world to act as individuals. Henceforth, we must apply ourskill and knowledge to overcome our weaknesses and reach our goal in life.
