THE HERON 1970-71 The Heron is the Brantley County mascot whom each mem- ber of B.C.H. S. is very proud of. It has truly been a symbol of determination, good sportsmanship, and victory through- out our football and basketball season. So, let's probe into the life of our mascot. The heron's long legs, long neck, long bill, and cxpres - sion of constant surprise combine to give the heron an appear- ance, which once seen, is not likely to be forgotten. The heron is further famoxB for a greedy appetite. His most out- standing characteristic is his beautiful plum age which puts him in danger, because without mercy, men have hunted this lovely bird to take from it, his beautiful plumes known as aigrettes . They can be found grouped together in colonies known as heronries . We are a representation of the heron and its way of life. Brantley County High School is our nest where we group to- gether into our heronries. Here, the adult herons teach the younger ones in order that we may grow MENTALLY by in- creasing our knowledge in various subjects; and PHYSICALLY through participation in sports. Our big appetite revolves around sports because of our hunger to beat the opponent. Of course, many of the students wear an expression of constant surprise daily, becauseoftheirmischievious pranks and ideas. During our beauty pageants, the herons with their beautiful plumage, compete to obtain the title of Miss B.C.H.S. As theyears progress filled with laughter, tears, fun and memo- ries, each heronstrives toward maturity, changing his opinions and ideas on life. Finally, we find ourselves graduating, being released into the world to act as individuals. Henceforth, we must apply ourskill and knowledge to overcome our weaknesses and reach our goal in life. 1970-71 HERON EDITORS COMMENTS Being editor of your 1970-71 HERON has been an un- forgettable and cherished honor in which I give my thanks to the Senior Class for making possible this opportunity. I find it hard to choose the right words to express this ex- perience and as I contemplate, I realize that words can't express such emotions as tears, tension, worry, happiness, and a feeling of reward, all of which have been my com- panions from the beginning to the end of the construction of this yearbook. I have learned the true meaning of re- sponsibility and hopefully, this experience has helped to prepare me to cope with the many responsibilities that are awaiting me in life. We, the annua! staff, hope that we have captured some of the many memories that are of importance to you which you will cherish and carry with you always. I would like to give my personal thanks to the staff who gave their enthusiasm and constant help; to our sponsors who encouraged our ideas and helped us to carry them through; to Roger Musgrove who contributed the art; to Clifton Roberson, who through his patience and skill, served as our photographer; and most of all to YOU, for your interest and support. May you enjoy this yearbook as much as we en- joyed preparing it. Thank You. ANNUAL STAFF Subscription Salesmen Business Managers Clifton Roberson, Sandy Brooker Ad Salesmen SPONSORS We, the annual staff, would like to thank our sponsors who were of much help to us. They helped us to create many origi- nal ideas and to bring them to reality in our theme, layout and choice of pictures. They always gave us an honest opinion of our work and ideas. They were always there to help us when we needed them most. Without these three sponsors, Mr. Herndon, Mr. Thomas, and Mrs. Joiner, it would have been very difficult to pre- pare this 1970-71 Heron. We give our sin- cere appreciation to each of them. Layout Staff DEDICATION TO MRS. GRACE JOINER Here we are at the close of another school year, but for we seniors, it is the end of a long but cherished journey from elementary through high school. As we reminisce on our past, we realize that without the help of many concerned and patient people, we wouldn't be standing where we are now. However, one particular person stands out most in the minds and thoughts of our senior class. This person has made many contributions to our class through her help and cheerful attitude. As juniors, she helped us to smooth out the rough spots in the planning of our Junior-Senior Prom. With kind and reassuring words, she helped to calm the girls' tense and excited nerves at the Beauty Pageants. But most of all, she always kept an open mind and expressed her honest opinion when we needed it most, such as with the preparing of our 1970-71 HERON .Asa sponsor, she gave her devoted help and concern with our yearbook. However, we most of all thank her for just being herself ... a teacher capable of making any subject interesting and fun to learn; and a friend with an outstanding personality which reflects a glowing warmth, friendliness, and sincerity. With our sincere love and respect, we, the Senior Class of 1971 dedicate THE 1970-71 HERON to Mrs. Grace Joiner. Superintendent Mrs. Mable Moody PRINCIPAL OF B.C.H.S. Mr. A. L. Sutton The definition of a mascot is an animal which is sup- posed to bring good luck by being present. Our school mas- cot is the heron which we are very proud of. The heron was chosen because of its originality and has definitely been an outstanding mascot throughout the football and basketball season. Now, let's probe into the background history of a heron . . . The heron's long neck, long bill, and expression of constant surprise combine to give the heron an appearance which, once seen, is not likely to be forgotten. The heron is further famous for a greedy appetite, always being hun- gry. While fishing for a meal, the heron acquires a quiet pose of standing like a statue until his prey appears. Herons usually group together in colonies. They are also noted for their beautiful plumage and without mercy men have hunt- ed this lovely bird to take from it, their beautiful plumage. We, the students at Brantley County High, are a repre- sentation of the heron and its way of life. Brantley County is our nest in which we group together in colonies, the dif- ferent classes being the various colonies. Some of the mis- chievous herons cause constant surprise to teachers but, the expression of surprise switches to their face when they are nervously waiting to see Mr. Sutton in the office. Our greedy appetite is to beat the opponent in all sports, and activities. We hunger for success in all phases of competition. Then we are released into the world! Here, we must ap- ply our skill and knowledge to survive. BOARD OF EDUCATION ABOVE: Secretary Mrs. Carolyn Gunter RIGHT: Teacher Aids Miss Carolyn Chesser Mrs. Darlene Wainright Miss Dana Brand Curriculum Director Mrs. Ruth Davis Title I Clerk Mrs. Willie Brooker Guidance Counselor Miss Virleen Strickland TEACHERS The teachers represent those herons who have been educated, in order that they might relate to the younger herons and teach them the necessary elements of life. They try to prepare us for the near future when we will be independent, and have to live a life of our own. The choice of subjects they offer help to expand our knowledge and give us the ability to think, reason and solve, which is exercised in everyday living. They stress the importance of more education other than high school and hope that we make the right decision. Yes, we are grateful to these adult herons, regardless of whether some admit it or not. However, this event wouldn't have taken place if it had not been for the drought, effort, and time that Miss Langford and Mr. Herndon contribu- ted. We give our thanks to them for making this event possible. . . . OF CHEERING . . .
