Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1970 volume:

Brantley County High School Nahunta, Georgia A New XfiSr I Am Brantley County High Here I am, opening my doors once again for stu- dents to advance another step upward in their climb to success and the security they know they will need in the future - the future in which I will have no part, because I will have already drained myself to give them everything possible in the few short years they spent here in school. For the seniors, whose future is only a short time away, this year will be the last year that I can offer them anything from my store of facilities. For the underclassmen, there is still time to plan for the future. The gym, which is an important part of me. is a very familiar sight to physical education students, as well as to the athletes. My halls, which seem so wide when empty, become suddenly very narrow when they are filled with stu- dents changing classes or loitering during recess. The construction of the stadium has been an impor- tant accomplishment for Brantley County High this year. It is something of which all BCHS students as well as the faculty are extremely proud, because it improves greatly the appearance of my campus. As I, Brantley County High, close my doors at the end of this school year, it will be my sincere desire that seniors have made the most of their high school years. I hope to have contributed to each of your experiences in these few years that you will never forget, but will cherish forever - remembering your high school years as the best ones of your life. Remembering ... best years... forever... Remem- bering ... forever... Remembering 4 World of Action and Moods All BCHS students are caught up in the swiftly moving pace of school activities: clubs, magazine sales, participation in the beginner's band, election of club and class officers, and participation in constructive projects. But in the midst of the action and excite- ment of all these, is the spontaneous urge to seclude oneself from the chaotic halls or the lively park and spend a few moments in solitude, whether it be to study, meditate, talk with someone special, or just enjoy the quietness. As soon as the urge to be alone has passed, one moves once more into the lanes of student traffic, beginning to play the Hi Game” which is repeated dozens of times each day, without the slightest loss of the thrill and excitement stirred within us each time it is played. All these different actions and moods contribute to our increasing store of memories. World of Academics Students are constantly striving academically, whether it is to get the most out of a course or only to get another credit. Term papers, investigations, formulas, and equations are just a few of the elements that climax in the exam and then the dreaded, although longed for, day when grade cards are issued. Teachers, deadlines, and grade cuts are some of the more disturbing aspects of tlie academic world. Competition in academics is always interesting, especially when it means going to WFGA-TV in Jacksonville, Florida, to try out for the IT'S ACA- DEMIC team. We are very proud of the way BCHS was represented academically by our team. Sandy, Scott, and Glynn. Using a microscope in the lab holds a fascination for biology students. Students studying foreign languages take advantage of the facilities of the language lab, while the business department is open to students seeking training for future office work. All in all the academic world provides wonderful and everlast- ing memories for each of us. V 4? 8 World of Athletics The most important words in the athletic world are S-words: strength-of our athletes, support-of our cheerleaders, spirit-of our student body, and SUCCESS-of our team. Playing a very important role in the success of our athletic teams are the coaches, who are so patient with the inexperience of beginners, as well as the mistakes of the seasoned players. It is to our fine coaches that we attribute the excellence of our athletes. We are very proud of our athletic teams and the way they represent BCHS. May we continue to be successful throughout the entire season, thus estab- lishing permanently the association between HERONS and Victory - the Victorious Herons. Wouldn't we all be proud of such a title for our teams and school. Football is the sport that commands our interest in the fall; close on the heels of the football season is that of basketball, for both girls and boys. This well-loved sport is very popular in our school and community. In the spring we engage in track and tennis, thus making our year in the world of athletics complete. YEAH HERONS! World of Arts In die world of arts, students have the opportunity to develop their talents and broaden their field of knowledge and interests by including the lib- eral arts classes in their curriculum. Glee Club students profit by individual help from the Glee Club director, Mrs. Thomas. Mr. Braswell sometimes has a hard time trying to be patient with the beginners in band. We're look- ing forward to the first band performance at BCHS. Art Class becomes a particular interest to stu- dents when Mrs. Ham announces that they will learn to make leather shoes by hand. She dili- gently gives additional instructions to students striving for perfection of their projects. In Dedication To: MR. AL FERGUSON For your Years of service as a teacher and our junior and senior sponsor ... loyalty and devotion to us and our school problems ... sincere interest and understanding of our problems ... thinking always we are really great” fairness of judgement ... avid interest in the growth of the school ... friendship and sense of humor... and an unfailing enthusiasm in school activities. For all these you have made a lasting impression on us. We. the class of 1970, wish to express our gratitude by dedicating this, our yearbook, to you, Mr. Ferguson. 13 Editors Comments Being Editor of your 1970 Heron has been an ex- perience that I shall never forget. It has brought about tears, laughs, anger and now a new and ex- citing Heron that is all yours. It is impossible to put into this book things like friendship, knowledge, hope, love and faith, but these are truly the real things offered to us at Brantley County High School. 1 hope that we. of the Heron staff, have captured some of this year’s memories for you, though they are only a pictorial representation - a representa- tion to many of us of the most wonderful year at BCHS, our Senior Year. The staff and 1 have had the opportunity of pre- paring this yearbook, which would have been im- possible without the enthusiasm of the staff and motivation of our sponsors. 1 would like to take this opportunity to express to each of you a most deserved thank-you” for all that you have done, in hopes that each person will enjoy his annual as much as we enjoyed preparing it for him. i. lu CO-EDITOR and COPY EDITOR Gloria Smith LAYOUT Harry Strickland Beverly Smith and Myra Fain BUSINESS MANAGERS Rudolph Wainright and Randy Turner SPECU L FEATURES AD SALESMEN Layout Staff The Sponsors We, the Heron Staff, deeply appreciate the cooperation and concern of our sponsors, Mrs. Sutton, Mrs. Snowberger, and Mr. Ferguson. We are grateful for their advice and comments on our ideas and plans. Their experience and open-mindedness to our ideas was a tremendous help to us as we planned our yearbook. Thank you, Sponsors, for your patience with us, your time that you so generously gave us, and your kind interest in our work on the yearbook. We appreciate it very much. Superintendent - MRS. MABLE MOODY Superintendent’s Comments: Seniors - 1970 My, what a wonderful era in which to live, going to the moon and all that! In these times of wonder and discord, I appreciate the good conduct exhibited by you, our young adults. You have seen and read much of the unruly youth in our land, yet you have not participated. We adults are grateful. Our American heritage is not one of destruction, but rather of giving one's best to his her country and in helping others. You will need courage, stamina and guidance from on High to face the future and to resist the militancy of your peers. I am confident that you will merit the trust and responsibility handed to you to keep America a land to be proud of now and to pass on to your posterity. Board of Education - Mr. Charles D. Our thanks go to the photographers who were always available when we called, and who did not hesitate to trudge through mud to the stadium to shoot” the cheerleaders on the goal post. We want to thank Mr. Sutton and the faculty for their cooperation on the days the photographer took pictures, as well as the days members of the annual staff needed to miss class to work on the annual. We are grateful for the willingness of the senior sponsors to interrupt their busy schedules to attend our evening staff meetings, and we deeply appreciate Mr. Thornton's efforts to make our meetings possible. He was always willing to lend us the key to the building even though we did not sometimes return it until late. Our gratitude also goes to Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Davis who so willingly opened their home to us for the senior superlative pictures. Thanks to Mrs. Moody for submitting her superintendent's comments. Thank you, Mr. Naylor, for your cooperation with us as we planned and then put together our yearbook. Your advice and assistance was deeply appreciated. We express our thanks to those who patronized our annual. Without their help publication of our yearbook would not have been possible. Most of all we thank the members of the annual staff who were faithful in attending meetings as well as in working in the other areas such as selling sub- scriptions and ads, typing, planning and drawing layouts. Without their willingness to work, and to work hard, this 1970 HERON would never have materialized.
