Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1969 volume:

THE HERON NINETEEN SIXTY-NINE Brantley County High School To Brantley County High we give our love and loyal praises, Our hearts and minds are both en- twined, our voice in song now raises. We love the fields of stately pines, The Heron’s grace and flaming vines; Our alma mater is enshrined within our hearts forever. W e pledge to you our constant aim to ever keep your sacred name. Untarnished by the stress and strain that ever threatens learning. We love your name, your standards high, Y our constant urge to live and try. And we shall never let them die; Y our loyal sons and daughters. Now Is The Time Ecclesiastes CHAPTER 1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every pur- pose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from em- bracing; 6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep si- lence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. 3 A Time To Do Your Own Thing 4 However perfect the faculty and stu- dents of good old BCHS may seem on the surface, they all have their little human quirks which show up from time to time. Some people just can't help hamming it up for the camera, even if they are hard at work. Others can’t restrain themselves when it comes to the good food served at initiation, while others exchange the latest dirty joke or skip class for a stroll down the hall. It's okay to point an accusing finger at someone now and then, but when Seniors have to Indian wrestle to see who gets to be It in Ring-around- the-Rosie, something has to give! That’s what school is for, isn't it? Learning took on a new flavor of excitement as the students of BCHS discovered the countless gadgets installed to make learning more thorough and intetesting. The micro- scopes ... the language lab ... the technical drafting sets ... modern business education equipment ... members of the College Prep English even came up with a brainstorm or two of their own. 7 8 A Time To Compete And compete we did! The mighty Herons first whetted their thirst for victory on the football field where our fledging teams racked up two victories and one loss. Then our basketball teams caught the fever and fought till the end. The It’s Academic team put on a great show and came out number one. Our tumbling teams took form and even the cheerleaders got caught up in the whirl. CAROL scon V' ..IVI A Time To Remember For many of us, Brantley County High School will soon be but a memory. We shall look back on our school days with fond ness and a twinge of pain. The magic of the Beauty Pageants as our Queens were crowned; the excitement the day the Senior rings arrived; a quiet moment with that special someone; the bull sessions in the halls, hushed and then sparked with sudden laughter; the fun of faking it for a class project; the smug importance of special recognition; and, yes, even the last-minute frenzy of cramming for a test - these are all the wonderous memories we shall keep and ponder in our hearts as one phase of life closes behind us and another blossoms forth as a new horizon. Dedication 12 We, the Senior Class of 1969, dedicate our annual, THE HERON, to Mr. Pat Thornton. Mr. Thornton, you strive to keep our school clean, comfortable, and attractive and this means so much to students, although we don’t always show it. You greet students, co-workers, and the faculty with a pleasing smile and a warm personality, which makes it possible for all of us to feel so close to you. You will forever be remembered at Brantley County High School for your willingness to work and your responsible attitude toward the upkeep of our beautiful school that we are all so proud of. We are truly grateful too for your never-ending efforts to keep our school and its surroundings as you do. It makes it enjoyable for us to come to school and makes learning a more pleasant task. So to you, Mr. Thornton, from the Senior Class of 1969, we dedi- cate THE HERON, hoping that these words may express our feeling of deep appreciation that we have for you. Superintendent’s Comment To the Seniors of 1969 It is trite to remind you that you face a most challenging era. Your young lives have been a challenge to us adults. We have strived to give you the opportunities conducive to good learning so that you could develop skills to assist you in solving problems which are necessary to your well-being. There are certain basic virtues one needs to acquire in order to live happily and lead useful lives. They are: kindness, sincerity, honesty, under- standing, love, compassion. The great humanitarian. Dr. Albert Schweitzer, said, Whatever you have received more than others: in health, in talents, in success, in abilities, in a pleasant child- hood, in harmonious conditions of home life; all this you must not take to yourself as a matter of course, you must pay a price for it. You must render in return an unusually great sacrifice of your life for other lives.” I am grateful for the privilege that has been mine to work with you. This association has greatly enriched my life. Very sincerely, Mrs. Mable R. Moody Board Of Education STANDING: Edward Brand, C. D. Gibson, Robert Hunter, SEATED: E. G. Fowler, Mable Moody, John Lee. Principal’s Comment Curriculum Director MRS. RUTH DAVIS As this is being written, our school year is well past the half-way mark and we cannot realize how short the remaining days will be. For many of you it will mark the end of any kind of formal education. For others it will be the end of the first milestone. We have had a very good school year, and on behalf of the entire faculty I wish to thank you. This is your school and you are largely responsible for the kind of school we have. We, the faculty, are interested in you, especially in the caliber of work that you do. Too many are satisfied with just getting by in their work. Now is the time to help yourself to the great oppor- tunity you have to get a good education. If you need help, ask your teachers for some extra time. They will be delighted to know you care. COORDINATOR: Mrs. Carolyn Thomas Editor’s Comment The school year of 1968-69 is now almost ended. It has been a year filled with many unforgettable memories and incidents. The purpose of publishing this year's edition of the HERON was to attempt to put all the memories of fun times, learning times, and good times into one book filled with these experiences. It took many long, busy hours to put the 1969 HERON together and as editor for the annual, I wish to thank all the staff members who worked so earnestly and untiringly to the very last deadline. I also take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Mable R. Moody, our three senior sponsors, and the other adults who were always willing to give us their ulimited aid and support. May this 1969 HERON be used as a key to unlock the great school days of 1968-69. This annual will mean much to you in the future; and we hope that you will cherish it as a means of remembering this year for many, many years to come. Sincerely, R. L.
