A SCHOOL IS BORN . The peace and tranquility of this tract of land situated deep in the heart of South East Georgia was destined soon to be forever changed. The sleeping silence of pine fields and Cyprus swamps would soon be awakened to the sounds of progress—the sounds of Brantley County High School in the making. 1968 HERON BRANTLEY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Nahunta, Georgia 3 Carrying on the traditions brought down for generations, we, the students, faculty and administration of Brantley County High School strive to preserve the spirit of fair play, honesty, integrity, interest and, above all, friendship so charac- teristic of all the schools, past and present of Brantley County. Ever hungry for the taste of new- found knowledge, the students of Brantley County High School wage a never-ending battle against ignorance, superstition and prejudice, carrying on the work oj many generations of students, those gone, those of the present and those to come. STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE. . . Never content in the ranks of mediocracy each individual silently expresses his or her desire to be outstanding by constantly working toward attaining the highest degree of perfection possible. Competition being the key word in the world of today, the students of Brantley County High School keep in step by their constant effort to capture the most coveted of all rewards—respect of their fellow students—and will defend this honor both vigorously and enthusiastically to their abilities fullest extent. 10 IN MEMORIAM In fond memory of Billy Chancey whose, winning smile and warm friendliness was an inspiration to each of us. 12 DEDICA TION Brantley County High School is the cul- mination of dreams, hopes, plans, and prayers of citizens of our county. These excellent physical facilities and the up- dated curriculum provide the opportunity for an excellent education. In sincere appreciation for this endow- ment of your trust in us, we, the Sen- iors of 1968, dedicate this first edition of The Heron to you, the Citizens of Brantley County. FA CUL TY AND A DMINISTRA TION BOARD OF EDUCATION STANDING: Gold wire Fowler, Edward Brand, Robert Hunter. SEATED: Virgil Allen, Mrs. Mable R. Moody, C. D. Gibson. Title I Clerk: Mrs. Willie Brooker, Secretary: Mrs. Carolyn Gunter. PRINCIPAL Andrew L. Sutton Principal's Message To participate in the development of a new High School is indeed a pleasure of the highest esteem. To witness the growth of an educa- tional institution from a wealth of learning re - source materials, equipment, supplies and, above all, dedicated faculty members, is ex- citing. But the most encouraging of all experi- ences has been to observe the challenged ex- pressions on our students' faces. To you, students, I express thanks for your cooperation; to my faculty I extend deep appre- ciation for your extra efforts; to our citizens of Brantley County--who made Brantley County High possible, under the leadership of our Superintendent, Mrs. Mable R. Moody, and the Board of Education--I express profound gratitude. May Brantley County High School serve you well. BRANTLEY COUNTY PERSONNEL Teacher Aids: Miss Barbara Wiggins, Mrs. Eugene Wiley. He had been a member of the chapter since his Freshman year. He was very active in the forestry plot always eager and willing to do more than his share of the work. Billy had an amiable disposition and could be depended upon at all times without his ever demanding special recognition for a job well done. His service to the chapter is greatly appreciated and his memory will long be remembered and cherished by all. Billy Chancey FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA T7 Treasurer: James Crews F.F A. Now, as our year as Seniors come to an end, we leave behind us this remembrance of us, and the first year in Brantley County High School.
