TO THE FACULTY AND STUDENT BODY . . . As Editors of the 1981 annual staff, we began this task with many new and ambitious members. We have had many problems, many laughs, and many memories. The long hours we have spent to provide you with this book represents a labor of love. It has been a privilege to be your Editors, and we thank you for giving us this opportunity. Through this an- nual, we hope you will be able to look back and remember the special memories of ole B.H.S. We would like to give a special thanks to our parents for their love, encouragement and support. We also would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Melnick, our advisor. By presenting you this annual, we declare another school year at Branford High School officially closed. KEEP THE OLE BUCCANEER SPIRIT!!! He attended Bowling Green in Kentucky for two years, and graduated from the University of Florida in 1951. His long teaching career began in Starke, Florida where he taught five years while completing his degree at the University of Florida. He began teaching at Branford in 1950 and has contributed over thirty-five years of faithful, dedicated service to the youth of these two communities. His certification includes: English, Social Studies, Typing, Business Education, and Driver’s Education. Those of us who know and love him will always remember his classic reaction to nearly all situations — serious or comical — and that is simply “Hummph!” If time and space permitted, we could fill a book with the many hair-raising experiences and reactions of this brave Driver’s Education teacher. Special interests of Mr. Purcell include net fishing (with “greenhorns” beating the grass for mullet), loafing (with a cold drink and a candy bar down at the Inspection Station), philosophizing (with any and everyone), and helping others (wherever and whenever he can). His interest, willingness, and skill in photography has been in- valuable to the present and numerous past annual staffs. The faithful, familiar sight, with camera slung over his shoulder, will be sorely missed on campus. Over the years, Mr. Purcell has been very active in numerous social organizations including the Sportsman’s Club, the Men’s Club, a volunteer fireman, and also served as the Mayor of Branford. It seems that Mr. Purcell has a solid philosophy regarding life. It goes like this: “Everything is an attitude! Your approach to life is affected by attitude toward school, work, and life. You can make it a pleasure and successful or dull and difficult — just by your attitude.” Well, Mr. Purcell, it obviously has worked for you and surely was passed on to many students who have been fortunte enough to have passed under your guidance. Please accept our sincere appreciation for the many, many years of dedicated service and unselfish assistance. We proudly dedicate our 1980-81 Branford Buc- caneer to you. May your retirement be long and filled with happiness! The Branford Buccaneer Staff Principal Mr. Charles Millican Thank you faculty and students for your coopera- tion. it has been a pleasure working with you these past ten years. Again, our seniors are one of the best classes ever and I wish for them success and happiness in the future. Remember, nothing in the world can take the place of persistence and determination. Assistant Principal Mrs. Mary Daniels To this exceptional senior class, I sadly bid farewell. Remember who you are and what you represent. You have set the standard high for those who follow after. To the faculty and student body, my sincerest appreciation for an excellent year. May we con- tinue to work together to bring pride to the com- munity that supports us. God bless you all. Guidance Counselor Mr. O. H. Munch O remember my son and learn wisdom in thy youth. In March, a Professional Shakespeare performance was presented to our student body. .. . Air Force Band . .. . . . NFJC Sentinel Singers . . . Fads, Facts, and Fashions ’81 Jim Davis (Jock Ewing) died this year. After waiting in suspense for several mon- ths, it was revealed — Kristen Sheppard shot J.R. Speaking of shootings, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in December of 1980. In the spring of 1981, John W. Hinckley attempted assassination of our President, Ronald Reagen. On Inauguration Day, the hostages were released from Iran. Another at- tempted assassination was performed by Mehmet Ali Agea on the Pope. There have been many murders in Atlanta, Georgia, of Black males. This case is yet to be solved. Country Music has made a big come back. The Rock of the South, WAPE — went country. Barbara Mandrell and Kenny Rogers are still hitting number one with tunes like ‘I WAS COUNTRY, WHEN COUNTRY WASN’T COOL’ and ’LADY’, respectively. Other Country songs are ‘Love To Lay You Down, What Are We Doing in Love?, Drifter, Tumbleweed, Looking For Love, Angel Flying too Close to the Ground, Amanda, Nine to Five’. Rock Groups — AC DC, Styx, Van Halen, Led Zepplin, Ted Nugent, Queen, REO Speedwagon, The Police, and Molly Hachet. Although Country has come back Rock has not faded away; Popular singers in- clude the following: Sheena Easten, Pat Benatar, Bob Seger, Rosanne Cash, Neil Diamond, Cliff Richard, and Smokey Robinson. Hit singles — ‘Best of Times, Rap- ture, Bette Davis Eyes, Back in Black, Celebration, Another One Bites the Dust, Morning Train, Kiss on My List, Give Me Some Slack, The Tide Is High, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Being With You, Sukiyaki, Treat Me Right, Keep On Loving You, Don’t Stop the Music, FAME, and Games People Play'. In fashion the Western Look was in; the look included Western shirts, cowboy hats, and boots. To give a most successful ‘Western Look' one should wear designer jeans (Klein, Vanderbilt, or Sassoon). Wonder what REAL cowboys would have to say about the Look’??? Many people opted for ‘Economy’ cars, as the price of gas became well over a dollar. Several attempts have been made to provide other means of energy; a gasohol plant was set up in Lafayette County. These are a few facts of the year, but many go unnoticed; such as, our school at- tained NEW bleachers for the gym, our lunch program gave us Offer vs. Serve, and the annual staff worked many hard hours to capture some memories of ’81. They teased me about being their adopted mom. I almost feel like I was. These girls made a lot of sacrifices this year. They did a lot more than cheer at the games. They spent one Saturday teaching little girls cheers to raise money. They dressed up like clowns and football players at Homecoming. Sonya Summers was voted best clown. They also sold “Lick those Hornets” suckers and served the boys refreshments after some of their practices. This is just a few of the things we did this year. I would like to give a special thanks” to the 80-81 cheerleaders. I hope they enjoyed this year as much as I did.
