Boy, it's difficult to figure out just where the time went. As teenagers, We Weren't always patient. We tended to want everything immediately. Many of us spent so much of this past year wishing, waiting, and anticipating upcoming events that we didn't take time to en- joy each day as it came. CHOW many times have we heard people say that we are wishing our lives away?J Maybe now that it's over, we can reflect upon this past year and discover that some of the things that happened were actually fun. We might even discover that we learned a lot. And maybe, if we're really honest with ourselves, we might admit we are a little sad that the year is over. Perhaps next year we'1l begin enjoying more and wishing less. But there we go again . . . anticipating the future. Maybe that's what youth is all about. Whatever we say about the year, though, one thing's for cer- tain. It did seem to go by fast. Maybe that old cliche is still true. Time flies when you 're having fun. Fun time Summer is the favorite season of most stu- dents. It is that time of year we most look forward to. By the time June rolls around, most of us are eagerly anticipating the idea of getting up at any time of day, going to bed late, meeting some new guys or girls, and ly- ing in the sun on the beach. As the close of school grows near, it becomes harder and harder to concentrate. No matter how hard we try, summer always creeps into our thoughts. We daydream about what great times we will have. Sometimes our imaginary times actually become reality. Brandon students carried away many fond memories from the summer of '79, Jenny Marker went to the beach every chance she got. She also went to Busch Gardens, where she rode the Loch Ness Monster for the first time. N. is-.!,':',f ,gi .Q SSA'-'Q' . . Y, V V. a N 3-I '-41 1 eil The summer of '79 passed u Summer 19 9 Lance Sanderson and Joe Don Strickland had a very un- usual summer. They were hired as parking lot attendants at a hotel on the boardwalk at the beach. Sometimes, they took time off to go surfing. Halfway through the summer they both got laid off' ' from their jobs, their first taste of the ups- and-downs of real, adult business life. They spent the rest of their summer surfing. Helene Whitley had a very busy summer. When she wasn't antagonizing neighbors, watching television, going to the movies, or visiting the library, she could usually be found swimming at the local pool. Steven O'Sullivan managed to keep busy by going to the beach, water- fluming, and body surfing. He visited Ocean City, Maryland, and went to several amusement parks. When he could get away from family activities, he escaped to the skateboard park. Michelle Belanger, too, had a very exciting summer. She spent three days in a leadership workshop and canoed with her family down the Shenandoah River. s by so quickly that it seemed as if it had vanished before we realized it. All too soon our summer fun was over and it was time for school again . . . Like we said, time flies when you're h av ing fun! . 5 Fir t day give Way to wifi-11 W?2'+Jf11f:1f: 'TT '- 122+ Fi -BVI' ,rf ivwfif- l f.f f1' 'fi-'-, 'fig .J :-,2.- . ,- '- -1. There is more to school than reading, writing, and arithmetic. In between school work, most of us find time to participate in something other than classes. Some of us belong to clubsg others go out for sports. Most of us, though, like to go to the, games and dances. CSome of us are lucky enough to have a boy or girlfriend to go with us.l Brandon offers many social activities. There is something for everyone. The long list includes Drama Club for aspiring actors, the Pep Club for enthusiastic sports fans, the Christian Fellowship for fun-loving, though, religiously oriented stu- dents, the Surfing Club for advocates of that carefree sport, and the newspaper and yearbook staffs for aspiring journalists. , .- '-l n:1y-Q'-'.1z-nfmnwi Q'-i ' ' 'E' 431: ,QL ,M is S' M5 '1 IM X' V fwauff f U' I :sign U X4 N ip 3 1 L9 Jr 1 a n L 4 Jeymiililex 'clk gym M Q 1 I IL ILM v : P f 9' HT 1 n- 'QT' n 1-C Q fa e v1su'Nl'n1,,Me:krlxnyi Q QL K-r 0 I L fir lp ' Lfx 4 -K1 L -i ...bm J --'L' - :gl-'s.1,.1-r-,IfM.-ig. . During the winter, there is a choice reii be- tween basketball and iivrestling for bdys andiibe- tween basketball and gymnastics for girls. In the spring, track is available for both boys and girls. If that doesn't appeal to them, boys ban instead choose to participate in baseball and girls in softball. It is the goal of both the coaches and players to make the sports experience both a worthwhile and satisfying one for Brandon students. If time spent and effort expended are indicators of fhow well this goal was met, the 1979-80 Braridon sports season can be judged a huge success. 17 .nonuaniuamuxnzur - Tammy McCord I Lori Pederson CHEERLEADER . 1 :ff :H U fr. ,fl .fsqg-flrg'e,e, . The Chargers managed to finish the season with ties to Princess Anne and Kempsville, locking in a three-way tie with those teams for fourth place in the league. The team was coached by Terry Sawyer of White Oaks Elementary School. Though all team members performed well, the most valuable player for the season was Jennifer Armstrong. Susan Strobach walked away with honors as the most valuable offensive player, and Lisa Bruner took defensive honors. Throughout the season, the girls gained valuable experience which they hope to put to good use in the 1980 games. 'fs-J Front S St bach T. Regal, J. Morgan, C. Arzadon, F. Lyons, J. Building a wres- tling team requires all of this and more because, although in- dividual performance is impor- tant, combined efforts produce a team win or a team loss at each match. Under the direction of Coach Dave Early, Brandon's matmen struggled through another difficult building year. But relying on last year's learning experience and some new talent, the Chargers were able to come up with more wins individually and overall. Determination, skill, practice, and patience were developed this year at Brandon, and hopefully they will lead the Y matmen to greater, future 1 H7 success. l 24 l-Ft 'T if faabfi lliilli ,illil m it N .4 . . -., ,. ,Y . , 391149? Other goals of club members, however, included learning how to fill out in- surance forms, how to scratch inside your cast, how to defend yourself using your cast or crutches, and how to attract attention by looking helpless. The quality of a school's staff is the largest single factor in deter- mining the quality of the educational experience provided for stu- dents. A quality staff makes the difference between an average school and a superior school. At Brandon, we like to think we have that quality staff so important to a superior school. The goal of education is to help students realize their fullest poten- tial in two areas: academic and social. esae 4Brandon's faculty and staff gave that extra measure both in the classroom and out to help see that goal is met. They have shown that there's more to teachingland running a school than sitting at a desk. To foster school spirit, they have ridden donkeys, dressed up in ridiculous costumes, and given of their after-hours time to chaperone dances and cheer for the sports teams. They also did those things expected of a staff: planned lessons, graded papers, aiid worked ivvith individual students. 63 The job of an administrator is one which often goes unnoticed by the other people in the school. Students' roles are well defined as are those of the faculty, but what do principals do? These people must make the day to day decisions which affect the smooth opera- tion of the school. Student schedules, discipline, athletic scheduling, evaluations, finances, bus routes, and inservices are all part of the administrative domain. We at Brandon are lucky indeed to be served by such an outstanding group of administrators. Mr. Atkinson, Mrs. Edison, and Mr. Hoffman truly deserve much of the credit for the accomplishments of Brandon's faculty and students. Without their leadership and empathy, this would not be Brandon - it would just be another junior high school. 64 ADMI I TRATIO -:N F51 1 igilgienfiimrhbgj T54 A fl 11+- idijliuq Tl-ME 1f211Jhs1qgAQ1oIL ' ' 1 in yr.-A ,...N 71' ' A .l,.,..--. 'Many' ti-mes we had to acrifice precious' sleep to make time for these hare necessities. We didn't take time to realize how time was flying and how much fun weiwere having. U ,Perhaps the best way to catch a glimpse of what the life of a typical'Braniion student was like is to take a look at that of a not-so-typical student. Joe AScl1midlapp's 'life may be untypical. Yet, some of the problems he struggled with on a daily' basisfmany Brandon students faced at one time or another during the year., Turn the page for an account of the many exploits of Joe during one typical days at BJHS. . 11 Y , . ml se' MQ: if ?:..71!..J-,.. ,ig ' E Cy 'gil-' . Every morning he woke to the sound of the school bus leaving. He jumped out of bed Che slept in his clothesl, grabbed his books, and dashed for the door. After racing two blocks for the bus, he arrived only to find there were no seats left, forcing him to ride the remaining eight miles standing up. Once at school he was trampled by the anxious mob of stu- dents hurrying to homeroom. Bruised and bleeding, he crawled to the clinic, only to find he couldn't be admitted without a pass. Groaning, he trudged back to homeroom. His teacher sent him to the office for being 25 mintues late. QJoe didn't understand why his teacher wouldn't accept his excuse. After all, she accepted it the other 15 timeslj Office time again After hiding under the office chairs for 210 hours, Joe was finally discovered by Mr. Hoffman. Crawling meekly from under the chair, he faced a stern lecture and decided to take a paddling rather than be suspended. After three whacks, he was sent to lunch. The last in line as usual, Joe was served the final soyburger of the day. Looking around for a seat, he was not surprised to discover that once again he would have to eat in the win- dow sill. After his climb, he settled him- self and clumsily dropped his french fries. He spilled his milk while bending over to pick them up. Afternoon begins After a single bite of his soyburger, the bell rang. Joe jumped off the window sill and hurried off to face the remainder of the day. After what seemed to Joe an in- terminable amount of time, sixth bell finally rolled around. He heard his bus number had been changed as he listened to the afternoon announcements from the gym shower. Changed to what? Joe didn't hear. By look- ing up the rows of busses, Joe finally saw his fellow bus riders pulling out. fThey waved to him from the windows.J He chased the bus down the street and , ,,. U, . ,. , in V J . X , -i r. He gulped down his food and crawled exhausted into bed. He didn't move until the following morning when he again heard the familiar v-r-r-o-o-o- m-m, the bus pulling out. Joe jumped out of bed ready to face another day. He probably didn't realize at the time just how much fun he was having. I m iii , A CLASS OF 1983 v' me v A l To f 'f ,g.gr1. Ii.: ,.l. A. However, the testimonies of a witch who was as blind as her bats, a dwarf with an oversized memory lapse, a wolf who was too cool to be cool when witnessing a crime, and others were eliminated by the defense. Iwant to wash my hair, my hands, my face in snow . Many sang along to the familiar lyrics from Bing Crosby's White Christmas and dreamed of such an event for December. But even though high hopes were disap- pointed, January and February brought peace offerings in the form of record-breaking snows. With three snows in less than two weeks and one accumulating an amazing fifteen inches, Tidewater was paralyzed. But if traf- fic came to a halt, students were in high ger with their gift of four days of fun and frolic in the wet, white stuff which just hap- pened to be perfect for making snowballs or igloos. All good things must come to an end, and finally the time did come to return to the classroom and begin making up those four wonderful, fabulous, stupendous, snow days. :je l A tl' I 2 QI' ' c , , l H Cynthia Hamilton Eric Hammie Jerry Haney Arthur Harbin Michelle Harder Byron Harold Craig Harper Paul Harper Sheila Harrell Kyle Haffiff Cedric Harvey Lisa Haanler Scott Hasty Karin Haugen Scott Heath 132 it lr l Kris Grim Wendy Groahel , tlzf' ' 'w , 1 . For example, many of our students are coolg just as many bad, which is to say that they are good. Our boys dress as girls, and our girls wear their pajamas to school. Normal . . . right?
